You know what? Screw my previous post. Sonic Adventure is one of my favorites of all time, but this deserves my greatest ever:

I feel that no other game has successfully created a sense of isolation and exploration as Metroid Prime. The music was fantastic, and the atmosphere of an alien environment was done perfectly.

The greatest thing about the game is its premise:
You are alone. There is an incubating evil on the planet. Find it and destroy it.

Amazing game.

For me, picking a favourite game is like picking a favourite child; I'll feel guilty no matter what I pick.

Here are a list of some games that I personally consider to be the best, in no particular order:

Pokémon series (My first ever game was Pokémon Blue, so this series holds a special place in my heart, amazing gameplay and sprawling amount of content nonwithstanding)

Shadow of the Colossus (I've played through this game 40+ times over 3 different releases. Seriously.)

Metal Gear Solid 4 (I love just about everything about this game, even the 2-hour-long cutscenes and the so-called "scrappy mechanics.")

Batman: Arkham City (Jawdropping. Even as a huge Batfan, I enjoyed this game WAY more than I probably should have)

Phoenix Wright series (These games were a big part of what inspired me to become a writer. This is a series that I reccomend to just about everyone with a DS)
---Sub-entry: Ghost Trick (I thought this game was better than Mass Effect 2. So sue me.)

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (I played the death out of MvC2 in arcades, so I just about had a heart attack when the vanilla version of this game was announced. Ultimate is here instead because Phoenix Wright.)

Kid Icarus: Uprising (THIS GAME)

Team Fortress 2 (The only shooter I've gotten really into. The frequent updates always help make this game feel minty fresh)

Elite Beat Agents (I played this game nonstop until I got A's or S's on every song. Buy this game. Please? Convince Nintendo that a sequel is feasible! [and to all of you who will inevitably chime in; I have both of the Ouendan games])

Rhythm Heaven series (Funny, addictive and tough-as-nails, this is a series that I personally believe is WAY underappreciated)

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (If I had my way, every console Zelda would have WW's graphics. Come at me, haters)

Honourable mentions: Aliens: Infestation, Gunstar Super Heroes, Solatorobo: Red the Hunter, Megaman Battle Network series, Saints Row 3, Prototype, Infamous 2, No More Heroes 2

Wow, that ended up being way longer than I expected, and I STILL didn't get to mention some games!

It's either DMC 3 or Bayonetta. I may have played games that were better as experiences, or played games with better stories, but have never played anything that's better than those two as pure games.

Gun to my head I'd choose Devil May Cry 3. DMC 1 may have a few things over it design-wise, and Bayonetta may be the new queen on the block, but nothing will ever top the sweaty-palmed swear-filled experience I had going through it the first time. It's one of the only games where I can have fun while having my ass kicked. And no matter what anyone says the presentation/characters are pure awesome.

also it has this:

Special mention goes to Planescape: Torment. Fantastic writing and it stayed with me long after completion.

If I must be honest with myself, it has to be Halo 3. I have sunk more time into Halo 3 than any other game I have ever played, and I enjoy its campaign more than when I played it the first time. It's not perfect, but it's brought me so much fun over the years.

Ninja Gaiden Black, the perfect mix of action and excellent graphics. Story could be better, but it isn't a problem. The way the action flows so sublimely, the way the camera works so well (anyone who claims issues with the camera doesn't know how to operate it), and that perfect level of challenge and depth makes it my favorite game of all time. Bayonetta almost beat it, but I still prefer NGB/Ninja Gaiden/maybe Sigma/haven't tried Sigma Plus

Happy to see Sonic 2 mentioned, it's very dear to my nostalgic heart but that aside it's just a fantastic game. I love the visuals, characters, music, level design, controls, sense of speed...I've replayed it so many times and have never gotten sick of it.

Honourable Mentions: Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda: Link's Awakening, Street Fighter II/IV, Lemmings, Super Metroid, Super Mario Kart, Rhythm Tengoku, Fire Emblem (GBA), The World Ends With You, Streets of Rage II, any Super Smash Bros., 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors, Chrono Trigger, Phoenix Wright, Dynamite Headdy...this could go on :P

I think it has to be Ocarina of Time. It's extremely fun to play every time. Super Metroid is very close though.

Is Secret of Mana really that good? I bought it on the Virtual Console a few years ago and I only played a few hours. I don't remember much of it.

I agree wholeheartedly with all of that too! :D Many see Secret of Mana 2/Seiken Densetsu 3 as the superior game but something was just off with it for me and it never unfolded this magical feeling I got with the first. (Now I actually wonder where my copy of it ended up.)

Yeah it's one of the best games of that time period and one of the best games in general, even today it still holds up quite well and is especially fun with two friends in multiplayer.

Obviously a tough question, but I can't really put my favorite game here, because my favorites aren't usually what I'd objectively argue are the best games.

If I wanted to offer what I think is the greatest game ever, I think it would have to be Tetris. It's a unique creation of video gaming, and I think as classic as chess. People will be playing Tetris just as much in 50 years whereas Mario will be as relevant as Felix the Cat.

Super Mario 64 !!!

It's just the perfect game at the perfect time of my life (I bought an NTSC Nintendo 64 for this game and it came out in the US the day of my birthday :) )

Don't misunderstand me, I have no nostalgia or anything else but Super Mario Galaxy wich is truly as awesome just didn't have the same effect on me. Just because at this time almost each new Nintendo game was a wonderful surprise :D

Super Mario Bros. 3 is the one I'd shoot out without batting an eyelid. If you asked for thought, then it'd be a massive tie between that, the two Galaxies, Windwaker, Prime 2, Devil May Cry 3, Jet Set Radio, and Pokemon.

My top 3 are Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, and Super Metroid in that order.

RE4 has perfect everything basically. It's encounter design, gunplay, economy, length, pacing, and boss battles have yet to be matched by any other 3rd person shooter this gen. It's the perfect storm of elements. Every single little piece of the puzzle is on top of its game. I didn't even mention the fact that it's one of the most quotable games ever. Wow.

Metroid Prime and Super Metroid are very similar to me, I just give Prime the edge because I find exploration more satisfying in 3D. They're both just about perfect. I think Super Metroid is easily the best 2D game ever.
