I actually appreciate this. For one on a personal level I have such a ridiculous backlog that I shouldn't be downloading free games (even if I am interested in them) in the first place >_<.

Secondly, though, if they update their catalog frequently this could keep momentum for people to visit the site and not forget about it. Trickling out new games right as those slots reset is probably a smart way to keep people looking what is new there and downloading things.

You can pay to reduce that time or buy more slots, anyway, which is a smart thing to do though I can't say it's that appealing to me. I look at this is kind of a really cool free rental service.

I downloaded and installed Risen, but when I get the prompt to run the game and click it, the prompt disappears, but the game doesn't start. I don't see an ad or anything.

When I try to run it from my start menu, I get a quick popup saying that it's looking for updates, but then that disappears and again nothing happens. Anyone know what's going on?

Joke or no? I can't tell.

The selection is fairly limited and you only get 1 game at a time without paying real money.

From their Void FAQ:

Quote:
Newbie Protection
The first game you add to a slot can be changed before cooldown using the Newbie Protection.

I thought I was really reaching for the low-hanging fruit with that one.

Never overestimate GAF's collective intelligence, especially this close to E3. The fever, it rises.

So, any date on a UK release?

If anyone tries Fantasy Wars or Elven Legacy and needs some tips or info, I've written a guide for Elven Legacy and you can ask me for any kind of advice. Don't be discouraged by the difficulty level.

I loved both games. I wish 1C would port it to iOS/Android. It would be perfect.

Great idea. Did you get Wesnoth for iOS? Similar style of game.. also open source on PC.

I tried Wesnoth early on in it's development cycle (2006?). The art style was a big turn-off for me and I never revisited it. Maybe I should look into it now.

I tried Risen. Watched two 30 second ads, then played it for an hour. Didn't have any problems.

Just wondering when you get the ads, is that written into the game's program itself or does it pop up an internet browser window or something?

I'm trying to see if the fact that I only have Chrome installed as my only internet browser is the reason I can't launch the game. I'm guessing the popup ad only supports IE or something like that.

I think it's part of their program. When you click on the game's shortcut the screen goes black, you see one or two ads, then it goes straight to the game. I don't think it uses an internet browser.

So basically you have one game per slot that you can play as long as you want, but you can only change games after the cooldown is up?

Works for me.

Damn, then I have no idea what is wrong. When I click Risen's shortcut all I get is a small window saying "looking for upgrades", but the screen doesn't go black and it doesn't boot up the game. I also get no ads.

No, you don't.
In fact Risen is probably the better game out of the two.
At least gameplay-wise (which is the most relevant part in any game, as far as I'm concerned).

Combat is just a fraction of gameplay. Conversations, quests and exploration are gameplay as well and The Witcher excels in all of those. Don't know how it holds up to Risen since I've never played it but gameplay in The Witcher is good.
