It weird, doing movie musicals in recent years has been majorly hit and miss (chicago and nine with a few others). This has the look of one that could easily go and sweep every catagory when the Oscars come thought.
I can easily something going wrong with it. I don't want too, I like what I see and cant wait to see more However major side note is that they showed Samantha barks, and she even looks good in the role. |

I'm no expert on French military history, but I know the musical well; if the costume is wrong because it's *older* than the time period in question, there's a good reason for that. If it's too new, that's a problem, of course. Care to elaborate further on the issues? Edit (less spoilery, but I'm correcting a mistake I made): I was wrong about who was wearing what uniform at what point in the storyline; it'd be a police uniform you're alluding to, right?

Amanda Seyfried is a name you can (to an extent) sell a film on. They don't need to sell this film to people who saw the O2 concert - they need to sell it to people who don't know who Sam Barks is, i.e. most of America. |

Why is that? Aside from the fact that the Broadway play is well loved? Aside from that we've seen one trailer that shows no real acting. Lets wait to see how it all comes out before we start labeling it an oscar contender. There is a lot that could go horribly wrong.

The musical is an adaptation of the book as well (and many people would argue the best adaptation).

Anne Hathaway is radical casting for Fantine. Would never have seen it coming, but color me impressed. I Dreamed a Dream is meant to be belted to the rafters in a theater on Broadway, where the swells and lingering notes wrap around the audience and bounce off the columns and spill out into the lobby. But the style she's singing in could be really perfect for a film.

Thank god for that!
I have no doubt that Anne Hathaway could belt this to the rafters (note we haven't heard large chunks of the song yet), but I really think this interpretation is perfect for a film. Fantine has no reason to absolutely blow the roof off when she sings I Dreamed A Dream - she's sold all her hair and become a prostitute, and so she's completely devastated and at her lowest ebb. It'll be interesting to see the whole song in context - the cheesiest thing to do would be to show soft-focus flashbacks to Cosette's father, but I hope they'll avoid that.

As mentioned earlier, I'm also pretty sure Crowe can't sing. Javert isn't too demanding, especially compared to Valjean, but still. Maybe they cut "Stars"? :/ Also, holy shit I did not expect this to look this gorgeous. The King's Speech is as flat as a board, visually.

Lea Salonga is a legend.
And if you fall as Lucifer fell You fall, in flame! Plus the coda of that song is a badass Gavroche moment and every badass Gavroche moment must be in this film. |

However, lets be honest the Confrontation between Jackman and Crowe will be freaking incredible. I think this trailer is better than the Great Gatsby by a long shot as well.

Besides, most people know the musical first, so I see the new film doing rather well. Unless it has some horrific reviews. |
