AMD to end monthly Catalyst updates #1

Quote:
With the release of the AMD Catalyst™ 12.6 Beta driver (“Catalyst”), AMD would also like to announce that we are moving away from our Monthly Catalyst release plan. Our goal is to ensure that every Catalyst release delivers a substantial benefit to our end users; as we have today with the release of the Catalyst 12.6a Beta. We will still continue with the Catalyst naming convention; Catalyst: Year.Month. You just won’t see a new driver every single month. We are confident that this will only benefit the end user; you’ll only need to upgrade to a new Catalyst driver, when it makes sense.

I think this is dumb, but maybe it'll lead to better drivers.

They will still have the betas right? Sounds like the way Nvidia does it, which is always good when it comes to drivers.

Thank fuck, what's the point of monthly updates if you end up with frequent bugs. This makes way more sense.

Did the monthly updates actually deliver every time? If not, this is a good move

There's a 12.6 beta out now, as well as a new CAP. They're just ending monthly WHQL or whatever the ones that require Microsoft's approval are.

Do they do hotfixes for individual releases? Stuff like when Skyrim patched and broke reflections for a lot of people.

NVidia wouldn't be driver gods if AMD had instead announced they were moving into the iced tea business.

Indeed. This is good news for AMD users. AMD should've abandoned the monthly updates back when they were still called ATi.
