Edinburgh, Scotland GAF, I need your help!
#1
I was in your stunningly beautiful town recently, and found a nice candy shop on the Grassmarket, towards, I believe, Victoria Street.
I need your help with a purchase from there. I'll gladly make the effort worth your attention. Please PM me, if you'd care to help, and thanks for your assistance! Mods, I will be glad to let you know when this has been resolved so the thread could be closed. |

Unfortunately i live pretty far from Edinburgh to be able to help if you need a physical presence in the city. I'm just stopping by to say hi to any fellow scottish gaffers. In b4 shitstorm over calling our capital city a town... we're a very insecure country.

I've just recently moved out of Edinburgh after living there for a good few years, there definitely isn't a candy shop on Victoria Street... However, there is an amazing place called Oink, which deals exclusively in roasted hog sandwiches. £4 for a massive roll filled with hog, crackling and apple sauce, is excellent.
Seriously though, OP needs to provide an update, unless a candy shop has popped up in the last month on Victoria Street, he has got his directions wrong. EDIT: Just to correct myself, I don't believe there is even a candy shop in the Grassmarket... Loads of really good pubs and one amazing music shop, but not any candy shops. |

Thanks for your offer. Please understand I meant no disrespect to Edinburgh. I was completely enchanted by it. I use the word town in the best sense, because to me, it indicates a much more close knit community than anything else. The beauty and significance of the Royal Mile was humbling to me, and the idea that the "New" town was idea rooted in 1766 was just stunning to me. the Castle, the Palace, the Scott monument, your fantastic art museum, St Giles, Greyfriars Kirk, among other locations were soul stirring for me, as my mother's heritage started in Scotland.

Sorry OP but I can't help you since the last time I lived in Edinburgh was 1997. Hope it works out.
The rest of this post is just me reminiscing about my childhood in Edinburgh so feel free to ignore me as necessary :) I didn't even know we had GAFfer's living in Edinburgh. In hindsight, it makes sense. I lived there for 7 years from when I was 5-12. We initially lived near the old McEwan brewery building (6 Bryson Road!). It was kind of a lower-middle class area back then and I remember walking to Bruntsfield primary school with my Mom or Dad for a long, long time until we got a car. A few years later, after my parents had worked like dogs and saved up, we bought an old, dilapidated and horribly maintained flat in a much nicer part of town (Montague Street and Clerk). I also got to go to a (mostly) nicer school in George Heriot's which was an experience in of itself. So many good and bad memories of living in Edinburgh. I'm glad you liked it OP :) |

The shop is on the right hand side of the Grassmarket as you are moving up the incline, away from the castle area, if you will. I have a feeling it is a newer place, obviously, from the replies, and it is a very small storefront. They had one wall inside completely stocked with large glass containers with all types of candies, a couple of tables in the middle of the store with more boxed type goods, and the counter had an area which served different types of fudge. It was clearly there less than 2 weeks ago, but, again, I believe it to be a fairly new storefront.
I have had an offer to assist, so thanks to all others who've been so kind. Would be glad to continue to ues thread to reminisce about your experiences as residents, though, so feel free to contribute! |

After taking a look at the google map street view, I'm almost certain it's in the space addressed 37, in the building between the parking garage entrance for the Apex International Hotel and Heriot Brigde, in the street view, it looks like an empty storefront. As I said, I was fairly certain it was a new business.

I think I'm gonna have to check out this oink shop. I used to love pulled pork when I lived in Georgia!
I'm usually only ever in the grassmarket for the pubs! The one fact I know about the place, is the it was where they use to do the public hangings, and the pub called 'the last drop' got it's name as it's where the criminals would go for their last drink before being hung. |
