It it's not a blatant and insulting parody of another language, then sure. Although it does really matter how it's used or else it'll break immersion.
For example, Tales of Eternia had a made up language (it was an English cipher in a Japanese game, pretty clever) separating it's two worlds. Tales of Xillia used the very same language to separate this one tribe. But the other tribes and the rival country all spoke the same 'video game common' so it just looked silly. |

I think Americans missed out on this but the Lylat language in Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64) was AWESOME! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nHR4RsMc0g

I like it. Definitely brings me into the world more. Were people complaining about this in Star Fox Adventures?

Fox: "Bedabeda bedabeda" Falco: "Bwa bwa bwing dabba!" Slippy: "Dep dedep dep dedep" Peppy: "Bip bwip bip, bip bwip bwip!" Same goes for the gibberish language in the Panzer Dragoon games.

OP was wrong to use the word pretentious, but I do agree.
I'd put Fake Language, Real Foreign Language, and No Voice Acting all in my dislike category. If it in any way fits the game setting/story/world that anyone will communicate verbally with anyone else, do it in fully voiced dialogue in the language I speak and understand. Also extends out of games. But, Fake Language can add to the atmosphere/be a plot point, and No Voice means you don't have people who can understand it while I can't, so I'd put them both slightly above Undubbed Foreign Language. |

Animal Crossing? I haven't played in a long time, but I thought the characters spoke the words phonetically using a voice synthesizer and sped up, so it sounds like gibberish, but it's actually just whatever language in which you're playing.

I can't think of a foreign live action film I've ever had a huge desire to watch. I watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (subtitled) in class once, but I didn't choose the movie or how to watch it.
If there was one, I could see the lip sync, if it was bad, putting me off and changing my mind, but such a case hasn't happened. Animated, yes, of course, several. |
