This always bugged me about what could have been for the ending:

Quote:
Foxx was also characterized as unpleasant to work with. Foxx refused to fly commercially, forcing Universal to give him a private jet. Foxx would not participate in scenes on boats or planes. After gunshots were fired on set in the Dominican Republic on October 24, 2005, Foxx packed up and refused to return; this forced Mann to re-write the ending of the film, an ending that some crew members characterized as less dramatic than the original.[2] Foxx, who won an Academy Award after signing to do Miami Vice, was also reputed to complain about co-star Farrell's larger salary, something Foxx felt did not reflect his new status as an Oscar winner. Foxx received an increase in salary to match Farrell's. It was also reported that Foxx demanded top billing after winning an Oscar.

What a shit. At least he's in Django now but that kind of bullshit probably soured Mann on working with him in the future, especially after he'd been casting Jamie in a lot of flicks.

Mann should just say fuck it and make a full length movie about horse racing. The races in Luck were the best I ever saw on film or tv. He needs someone else to do his scripts for him, though. :P

Loved Collateral but I thought this was pretty average at best. Some of the shootouts were pretty entertaining.

... any ideas as to what the original ending was? I remember back then leaving the theater feeling a little hollow inside (same non-reaction I had with M:I3), at no point having felt emotionally engaged in the plot or the characters. I think part of the problem is that the two main characters are so damn boring, which was weird considering the Vincent/Max relationship in Collateral was so fucking good.

I loved the movie. I thought it was so compelling, and Collin was excellent. There was a moment when he is staring out the window of the Nicholas's apt, and hes looking out over the ocean, its excellent. Like he is kind of listening, but has a million things going on through his mind.

Jamie Fox is a punk, and was terrible in this movie. Most over rated actor in Hollywood, except Hollywood is finally catching on to him, his lack of roles in recent years tells you all you need to know.

He's going to be in the new Tarantino movie, but yeah he's generally pretty bad. He can be good though, like in Collateral.

The characters in Miami Vice really are the worst. The movie paints them as being the coolest, they attempt to speak cool, they try really hard to act cool. But they don't succeed. Not even close. They aren't cool. They don't ever do anything cool. They suck, even. Jaime Foxx makes the stupidest faces, thinking it makes him look cool. Pay attention, you'll see, if you dare to watch this movie again. There is zero chemistry going on between Tubbs and Crockett, I mean nothing, nada. They might as well be complete strangers that met the night the movie starts at. It's such a casting and directorial failure.

WTF are you serious? Please don't tell me that doofus Ryan Gosling was cool in Drive though...please don't. Because he was about as socially awkward as they get, and that phony toothpick routine.

I take swagger lessons from Crockett and Tubbs in this film. When he's chatting up that bartender at the start of the movie...smooth...that's how they do it.

Drive's the worst, everybody's negative opinion about Miami Vice is what I've been leveling at Drive for a while. And I only mention it in relation to this because it was also pretty much style over substance, only done badly....and less cool lol.

My take on Drive is that Gosling was actually a Terminator who couldnt find John Connor and so he became a mechanic. That still doesn't explain why people thought it was so good. Or maybe it does. It WAS better than Terminator 3.

as far a music in Michael Mann films goes, I love the ending of Collateral. Requiem by Antonio Pinto is perfect.

Also, the club scene and the moment with the coyote. Man, what a great soundtrack.

Drive, like Miami Vice, starts slow. It takes about 30 minutes to get started. Tension rises, shit's at stake, stuff goes down. Shit actually happens.

It takes two fucking hours for Miami Vice to get started.

p.s. Drive's the best.

lol at the Drogba gif. Dude, Miami Vice starts right away. If you're talking about the main plot though yeah it takes a bit of time but 2 hours? Dawg they're setting up right after Jon Hawkes kills himself.

I was like you all once when I saw this in theaters, I hated it. But rewatching it a couple years later made me love it. Not for everyone though clearly. Anyways I'm out.

Thanks for the Mann-appreciation thread jett.

I don't know what the original ending was; will research that though. I think the 2 main characters were a bit boring because of how realistically they were portrayed.

Love the storms in the movie.

Still a little sad we won't get a new Vice City game for a very long time.

Also wish they'd release the non directors cut on blu ray. Mann director cuts are never better than the originals.

This movie...

The supporting cast is amazing. John Ortiz, the guy who played Jose Yero, was absolutely unreal. All of the supporting cops were great.

The problem was the leads.

Colin Farrell - just a bad choice as crockett. Unconvincing, all around.

Jamie Foxx - He looked and sounded like Tubbs, but his real life hangups interfered with the movie. The entire finale shootout had to be re written and re shot because Jamie Foxx was too scared to keep filming in the Dominican Republic. And he was so scared of flying that they had to make changes to all the scenes involving airplanes. Jamie Foxx is an awesome actor but the fact is he's kind of a wuss IRL. Michael Mann films usually involve a lot of physical involvement and filming in authentic, sometimes dangerous, environments.

Li Gong - Terribad. She was reading most of her lines phonetically because she didn't speak much English, and it showed. Also, why not hire a legit Cuban actress rather than a Chinese actress who can't even even act using a proper Hispanic accent?

The story - Starts off REALLY strong. Goes off the rails when Crockett and whatsherface run off to Cuba. WAY too much time spent on their uninteresting, muted and forced romance.

What kills me about this film is that it's a few tweaks away from brilliance. The supporting cast is _so fucking good_ and they were wasted. That bugs me so much. I wish they'd try again with new leads.

The storm near the end is stunning.
This movie really captures the sky like nothing else, even when there's no huge storms going on. During the day you can see it stretching endlessly into the horizon with the super deep focus, and during the night you can make out the pollution and cloud cover amid the video noise.

You can get the theatrical edition on Blu Ray in the UK and Australia.
The so called 'unrated director's edition' is not really the 'director's cut'. Mann makes clear on the commentary that it's just an alternate version he produced, not his preferred cut.
