Even with all these amazing titles, I find it hard to believe that any of the games will ever beat my top 5 or 10. This is probably due to nostalgia and other similar reasons, but I would've hoped that a game this gen would become my all time favorite. There's still time left though.

We're talking in the conversation of top 5/10 all time great games. I honestly don't believe anything other than the Portals and Mario Galaxies will have that lasting acclaim. |

That's a good one. Although it's *looking* like AC3 might surpass it in every way, time will tell.

Yeah it was great. Not one of my all time favorites though.

Plenty, I think. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are already two of my favorite games, Nintendo produced some great stuff as usual, and at the least Modern Warfare 1 will remain a very notable game for better or worse. Hell, I think Bioshock, while dumbed down from System Shock 2, may stand out more now due to how much it contrasts the CoD model.

I don't know about that. There are quite a few classic novels and films that are routinely called out for being overrated. It's all about opinions, but that doesn't mean they're universal.

The thing is that Journey isn't so much a "AAA" big budget title, where a lot more content is expected, but rather an impressive low price 'indie' title that doesn't rely on enemy encounters and dialog to make an impression. If you feel that it lacks substance, then it's probably not for you. I felt that the substance was in the clever use of simple gameplay mechanics and visual cues to tell a story. Yeah, it's short, but it's amazing in my opinion. It showed me that interactive media has much more potential in storytelling and expression than what is already established as standard, and that is what will make it a classic.

These are games I feel will be remembered as classics, meaning they're fundamentally well-done and/or innovative games that canvassed enough of the gaming community's conscience to be looked back on fondly by a large portion in the future, and they have qualities that will invite rediscovery down the road, or are doing something particularly unique that, for better or worse, makes them a milestone of sorts (I.E. Heavy Rain):
BioShock MGS4 Crysis Demon's Souls Super Mario Galaxy Super Mario Galaxy 2 Arkham Asylum Arkham City Mass Effect Super Street Fighter IV Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 NSMB Wii Uncharted 2 Heavy Rain Alan Wake Red Dead Redemption Donkey Kong Country Returns Portal 2 Vanquish Catherine Deus Ex: Human Revolution Amnesia: The Dark Descent Pokemon Black/White Super Mario 3D Land Resident Evil Revelations Kid Icarus Uprising I'm sure there are more I'm overlooking, and others I haven't played but I suspect they should be on the list, like Dark Souls and Bayonetta (damn unoptimized PS3 version). There are others that -should- be on there, like Bulletstorm, but sadly I just don't think enough people tried the game. And of course, this gen is not over yet. I feel like WiiU games should be counted, since the system's roughly the same power as PS3/360, but I guess I can't because it's technically the next Nintendo console. That being said, Project P-100 and NSMBU look like classics in the making to me. And coming up on PS3, we have The Last of Us and Beyond, which both look like they'll be memorable titles. We have Metal Gear Rising and Resident Evil 6, which I anticipate will be games that stick with people down the road. Dishonored, if it gets the exposure it deserves, could be a true classic. And Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs could very well be the next unforgettable horror experience. I'm sure BioShock Infinite will be grand as well. Hmm... I will say this, though: In terms of impact and that sense of "WHOA, I'M PLAYING THE FUTURE," we haven't had this gen's, say, OoT or RE4....... Not yet. Instead, we've had a ton of top-notch games, a more diverse quantity with a higher average quality than at any other time in gaming history.

The games mentioned in this thread like Mario Galaxy, Red Dead, Bioshock, and others are pretty popular but also highly regarded as masterpieces. Yes there are of course opinions, but would you really put XIII/XIII-2 and Graces in your top 25?

Of course. It's not even that hard to find them! Cave's games, Platinum's games, Serious Sam 3, Hard Corps Uprising...

Absolutely. I love those games and I can explain every bit of reason why.

Journey? God I hope not. I enjoyed the game, but one of the most over rated games I have ever played in all my years of life.
Red Dead Redemption. Assassins Creed 2. Bioshock ( until you meet Ryan and not after ), and a few others I'm too lazy to add could easily go into the Pantheon. |
