That was what Dezaki did as well - use style to make up for a lack of animation. Watching Oniisama e and Hidamari Sketch at the same time, the influence that he had on Shinbo is palpable - despite the great differences between the two shows, there's a certain similarity in how they use abstract imagery. Shinbo hasn't exactly tried to hide that influence either; he's even confessed that the famous Shaft head tilt was inspired by the last scene of Dezaki's Treasure Island. Shin Oonuma has that same influence by proxy.

Shaft shows, and Dusk Maiden as well, want you to be aware of the camera. Beyond the fairly pretty framing, this episode actually had split screen and a two-dimensional (or at least flat) 360 rotation. Heck, even the shadows had some meaning to the plot. It's a film-wank's dream show, because every frame packs some kind of visual metaphor waiting to be read.
You know what show also has split-screen (and quite a bit of it)? Oniisama e.

It's at least geometric! This guy will presumably train a couple of younger guys and hopefully they borrow from him in their careers.
Well, you can keep an eye on Kokoro Connect this summer, which Oonuma is only chief director on while another person, Shinya Kawamo, is the principal director. I've heard rumors that Oonuma has left Silver Link, and indeed, while he has directed their last several productions he is directing none of their upcoming ones, so we'll see if any of the other staff at the studio follow in his footsteps once he's gone.

I think it would be great to see an important commercial studio like that one go truly independent and finance completely a work while managing promotion and distribution. The emission on TV isn't as important as it once was, so maybe they can avoid that where the production companies have one of its realms. For Kyoto Animation, I'd like to think that their light novel publishing efforts are like a first step towards something like this.

It feels like it's been forever since I watched the show, but I really don't remember anything about it in terms of how it looks other than the postcard moments. Maybe at that point, I just wasn't struck by any of the art.

Ace, being earlier, didn't seem to have anything jump out at me either.

That definitely more than made up for episode 11. Andromeda Shun is just so cool. That chain I want so much more.. I hope the other legendary saints show up, their skills, if like Seiya and Shun, then they are as hot as Ryuho, Haruto, Kouga, and Souma's. And was this episode great! Kouga and Ryuho teamwork for the win, I love when Kouga goes off to be, as Souma says, Cool on his own, it always leads to amazing things like that stunning defeat of the silver saint.

The anime adapts Pan Tachibana's erotic comedy light novels of the same name. A young man named Ryōsuke (played by Hiro Shimono) struggles to regain his "erotic spirit," which he lost by making a contract with a beautiful Goddess of Death named Risara (Aya Endo). Ryōsuke cannot enjoy himself while the two live together; because of his contract, he can no longer become excited by watching girls — causing him to wonder if his adolescent days are over.

The Fate/Zero social game for Japanese mobile phones will launch this Summer. Ufotable is involved in the production in some capacity, since they want to retain the anime art style. They'll be providing artwork for the game, not sure what else. The site currently rotates a series of illustrations of unusual rearranged master/servant pairings from the 7 teams:

This is kind of amusing to contemplate. I don't think you could find a less compatible pair than Kiritsugu/Gilgamesh. A master who treats his servant as a mere tool and has a wish that Gilgamesh would be utterly contemptuous of? How long would it take Archer to rain swords down on Kerry?

Kiritsugu is pretty practical about things. I more wonder just how strong his conviction is and if Gilgamesh could talk him into partaking the pleasure of life much like he did Kirei or if Gilgamesh would just write him off as boring and unworthy.

Hyouka Episode 9

I'm a little disappointed in this episode, although it wasn't really bad or anything. It just felt draggy, and after the previous episode I was really expecting more. It wasn't as interested as last week, and the theories were all kinda meh. It was still really pretty, and I guess the story arc is kinda moving forward, but like with most things Hyouka I just wish they got on with it instead of padding it with inconsequential stuff.

As far as I'm concerned: Dezaki was the first episode director working in the anime business to treat his productions like they were flowing pages of moving manga, which is the inspiration for all of his stylized stills, abrupt action sequences, and general distortion of his character's emotions at a certain point in time. So, in addition to saving a decent amount of funding and time spent on an episode, he also applies his own experience as a mangaka to anime production itself. A very important man, and one of the first directors with a truly-distinct style. The other directors with as much distinction around that time never had as much of the limelight as him—not even Tezuka, or Masaaki Osumi.

I can see a lot of Dezaki in Dusk Maiden.

No, you're allowed. :( I hope I don't come off that way!

Even most classic anime enthusiasts don't have knowledge of Band of Ninja -- hell, even some Oshima fans don't know about it. It's a weird movie which isn't really animation nor live action, and was Oshima's only foray into the anime industry. It's pretty unknown.

Oh. Well that's sometimes the impression you give off, from my POV at least. Dezaki incorporated his style into cel animation, which is what I was referring to. This sounds plain different.

That makes more sense. I've never heard of it either. And, frankly, it sounds like it'd be considered a footnote even on Anipages, so there's that too.

I think Gil could end up finding Kiritsugu amusing, like Kirei. Maybe he could even give him some suggestions regarding his view of world salvation... Kiritsugu's actual attempts to fight rather than just leaving everything to his 'servant' likely would please Gil too and I can't ee them running into the moral conflicts that Saber and Kiritsugu had.

Nah, I doubt that it would work. Kiritsugu would never consider Gilgamesh anything more than a tool and would outright ignore whatever statements he'd make. Gilgamesh detested Tokiomi simply because he looked at Servants in the same fashion even as he was sucking up to him. Kiritsugu simply drops the pretense altogether, although to his credit he would simply work around Gilgamesh's actions and personality rather than trying to control it like Tokiomi did.

It would be an extremely strained relationship, to say the least.

I also wonder how Irisviel would fit into this. She's definitely isn't getting the same courtesy from Gilgamesh that she got from Saber, that's for sure.

Gilgamesh didn't detest Tokiomi because of how he looked at his Servants though. He only got annoyed when Tokiomi gave him orders he disagreed with, but that wasn't why he didn't enjoy the relationship. He didn't enjoy it because it was boring. Tokiomi would just sit and scheme, and that was to him unbecoming of a Master.

I think Gilgamesh would find Kiritsugu a very interesting person, and a very interesting Master. On top of that, his relationship with Maiya and Irisviel would play further into Gil's curiosity. One thing Gil finds extremely appealing is the potential for suffering, and the entire Kirtsugu set up is filled with that.

Would Gilgamesh like Kiritsugu? Probably not. Would he find him fascinating? Without a doubt. Would this fascination create a positive dynamic for the team? It depends on what Kiritsugu does with it. Would this probably end badly for everyone involved? Without a doubt, but it would be really entertaining as well. :)

The eh, episodes in terms of something happening always have the decent animations in explaining them, I guess to keep us entertained.
So yeah, it wasn't as intriguing as last week's. I feel like there were some clues dropped in the written text, but I would imagine I would need some Holmes background to get that.
At least, the episode got a little better with drunk Eri, but that was also might have been the episode was almost over by then.

I'm firmly in the pro-Bakemonogatari camp, but then again, I'm pretty pro-SHAFT in general and enjoy long, rambling dialogue.
Well, stop me if you've heard this before, but I am pretty sure it's down to the writing of the characters.

I know, I know, it's crazy. People don't watch anime for those kinds of reasons! But I really do think that's what makes the series so successful. I know that people like to argue that it's the fanservice or the SHAFT-isms or the lolis but we've already seen how all those factors don't necessarily make a show successful. If you took away those characteristics and the way those characters talk and that self-indulgent dialogue from the series it wouldn't be popular at all.
