another point they were arguing is the archives and the memories...

we may not notice but many friendships, communities maybe even love is born in places like internet forums, to know you are going to deny them the joy of revisiting a thread or archive that is very dear to them does suck.

I know for example that there was a meet up that I couldn't go to because I was in Europe (like now) from the major forum users, people flew across countries in Latinamerica to meet up...
So, why can't you give them the forum?

The right thing to do is to let someone else run it and pay for the servers and all that if they want to.

It is your call though. There was a popular forum for NHL games years ago, cyberhockey or something like that, but the founder pulled the plug one day and went on a mission trip. All that was left of the forum was a goodbye letter from the guy.

I googled 'german sci-fi tv show 2002' and found Lexx.

This looks like a show German nerds would talk about, so I'm going with it.

In all seriousness though: you accept an agreement to post your 'concent' (posts) on a forum and you lose ownership of all of it right there and then.

But business sense says: Sell it to 'em, they'll buy at a high price. Hey, I don't believe in doing stuff for free either, and if they want it...

Actually, I think that's how ownership of neogaf migrated to Evilore in the first place, if I recall correctly.

edit: ok, that is one hell of a phallus symbol, Spiffy.

It was filmed in Canada, produced by Germans. Was a weird show. So I guess the forum was lexxverse?

if you need to initiate order 66, then do what needs to be done.

you made the village with your money and time, they went to you for guidance and now they don't respect your wishes? Give them 2 weeks to know you are leaving and the site will be closing down.

or you can just leave it open, let mods mod and just show up when people need a final say.

Oh man, what a retro looking site. People are actually on it right now too, although they could all be GAF lurkers.

I can't be OPs forum, but stuff like that is so weird to me. What are these people doing still posting on these sites.

Anyway, let me tell you guys my story so you can all understand why I pose that question.

Back in 2002 I had a lot of free time and a bit of depression and I was very much into a popular TV show in my country so I decided to open up a forum to talk about it. It took off (for the topic it handled and what it was) and It had a lot of traffic and people posting daily, with moderators and all and I was the "main guy".

Once I finished my major and the TV show started to turn into crap, I told the mods and everyone I was going to close the place.

They said "you aren't closing shit and we are dead serious".

and this communication ensued:

ME: "wait a sec. this is MY forum, I made it, I decide what does or does not happen here and as much as I love it, I don't have the time and patience to keep it alive. sorry"
THEM: "Hell no, you just can create the foundations of a village, populate it, and then burn it at your will"
ME: " I must leave and a headless forum will turn into shit in 2 weeks the latest and you don't know HTML or anything, besides there's no feature here to make you administrators, only my account has administrator level"
THEM: "pass your account on to someone else, give it to one of us"
ME: "Fuck NO, besides, anyone else wanting to own a forum should open their own, this is mine and I won't be happy if other people use the brand (the name of the forum, which was rather popular) I created without my consent. you guys wanna continue talking? then learn and do a forum of your own."

..... what do you all think? who is right??? I am really not sure... that village analogy left me thinking...
I ran a popular (in fact, the world's biggest!!) MGS site for years, and forged a really brilliant community, especially after we took over the 2nd largest MGS site. After a while, I grew tired of running it, and the guys at MGSTUS (who had just opened) looked like they were going to do a good job, so after some months of wrangling over the decision I decided to pack it in.

I agreed to host a gaming/off topic forum with the community so the old community could stay together, and about 20-30 of them did. After a while I grew tired of that and one day decided to suddenly close the forum down.

A dick-move by me, indeed, but it was my right. Since then, that community has moved on. Some of them organised a new forum and post there, a number of us just ended up on GAF.

But yeah, you're technically in the right. The forum is your property. You built it up, you sank your cash into it, and it's yours to do as you please. Whilst there's a community you fostered too, their sense of ownership is wholly artificial, and I'm sure they'll be able to organise an offshoot community themselves, should they wish.

One thing I will say is that I kind of wish I'd given them time to organise a new place to go to before I shut it down. It literally was one day open, the next closed. The only consolation prize they got was that I forwarded the domain to their new place, so everyone found their way back, at least, but I don't dwell on it at all.

I was JUST thinking about this while looking at EviLore's vacation thread. Like, what would happen if something happened to him? Would GAF shut down with no notice? What would the fallout be like? Its a big enough community to get some attention on some blogs.

OP you had the right to close the forum. It was your privately owned and operated site. It was, however, a dick move.

Just my 2 cents, take em for what they're worth.

I've ran several huge / well known sites in the past; Unreal Battlegrounds, Street Fighter Devotion Forums (Before it went to Capcom Unity) and I currently run Shadowhaxor.net. Now these forums although started and ran by me when I decided I no longer had the time or ambition to run the forums I checked around to see if anyone wanted to run them. Sadly for Unreal Battlegrounds and SFD Forums noone wanted to run them so I shut them down.

I'm stll on the fence about Shadowhaxor.net but I'm pretty sure since that forum is pretty huge and there's a large amount of VGM resources there that someone will want to take over the file cluster and website / webserver so I'd offer it up to someone/s if they were capable of running the show. Or I'd sell it.

I'd never close a community based site down without checking to see if I can pass it on cause it sorta feels like my legacy that I'd rather see go on even if it's without me.

Hey... what happens if EviLore (God forbid) dies?

Is it like a will reading in a soap opera or something? Does GAF go down with him? Not that I think he'll die, he's obviously immortal and ever-lasting, but I got curious with this thread.
