The right thing to do is to let someone else run it and pay for the servers and all that if they want to.
It is your call though. There was a popular forum for NHL games years ago, cyberhockey or something like that, but the founder pulled the plug one day and went on a mission trip. All that was left of the forum was a goodbye letter from the guy. |

Don't have to, since you're travelling to Europe. So I'll just wait and MEET YOU SOMEWHERE, MOTHERF*CKER
I do hope that's not a banned meme though In all seriousness though: you accept an agreement to post your 'concent' (posts) on a forum and you lose ownership of all of it right there and then. But business sense says: Sell it to 'em, they'll buy at a high price. Hey, I don't believe in doing stuff for free either, and if they want it... Actually, I think that's how ownership of neogaf migrated to Evilore in the first place, if I recall correctly. edit: ok, that is one hell of a phallus symbol, Spiffy. |

if you need to initiate order 66, then do what needs to be done.
you made the village with your money and time, they went to you for guidance and now they don't respect your wishes? Give them 2 weeks to know you are leaving and the site will be closing down. or you can just leave it open, let mods mod and just show up when people need a final say. |

I can't be OPs forum, but stuff like that is so weird to me. What are these people doing still posting on these sites. |

I agreed to host a gaming/off topic forum with the community so the old community could stay together, and about 20-30 of them did. After a while I grew tired of that and one day decided to suddenly close the forum down. A dick-move by me, indeed, but it was my right. Since then, that community has moved on. Some of them organised a new forum and post there, a number of us just ended up on GAF. But yeah, you're technically in the right. The forum is your property. You built it up, you sank your cash into it, and it's yours to do as you please. Whilst there's a community you fostered too, their sense of ownership is wholly artificial, and I'm sure they'll be able to organise an offshoot community themselves, should they wish. One thing I will say is that I kind of wish I'd given them time to organise a new place to go to before I shut it down. It literally was one day open, the next closed. The only consolation prize they got was that I forwarded the domain to their new place, so everyone found their way back, at least, but I don't dwell on it at all. |

I was JUST thinking about this while looking at EviLore's vacation thread. Like, what would happen if something happened to him? Would GAF shut down with no notice? What would the fallout be like? Its a big enough community to get some attention on some blogs.

Just my 2 cents, take em for what they're worth.
I've ran several huge / well known sites in the past; Unreal Battlegrounds, Street Fighter Devotion Forums (Before it went to Capcom Unity) and I currently run Shadowhaxor.net. Now these forums although started and ran by me when I decided I no longer had the time or ambition to run the forums I checked around to see if anyone wanted to run them. Sadly for Unreal Battlegrounds and SFD Forums noone wanted to run them so I shut them down. I'm stll on the fence about Shadowhaxor.net but I'm pretty sure since that forum is pretty huge and there's a large amount of VGM resources there that someone will want to take over the file cluster and website / webserver so I'd offer it up to someone/s if they were capable of running the show. Or I'd sell it. I'd never close a community based site down without checking to see if I can pass it on cause it sorta feels like my legacy that I'd rather see go on even if it's without me. |
