Beard-GAF: White/Grey hair, to dye or not to dye?
#1
I'm considering growing a real beard for the first time. I have maintained a consistent look of very short facial and head hair (as can be seen here) for years by using an electrical trimmer every few days.
I didn't give my grey hair much thought since it was barely visible due to its short length on my head and face, but since I decided to experiment with growing a beard (currently unshaven for about 2 weeks); well the white hair is very noticiable now, and it isn't uniformly distributed. I haven't decided yet if I hate the way it looks, but it's making me do a double-take whenever I notice it in the mirror, and I do wonder if other people think it's unsightly. So what do you say GAF? Do thick patches of white hair on a man's beard look fugly? Do you/would you dye your beard? And should I expect to look better/worse as it develops into a full, real beard (I heard it takes about 6 weeks)? Is this thread worthless without pics?

Embrace your age. I have been since 20. Oddly my family doesn't go grey. Instead we go white and we do so at a young age. The good thing though is that we keep our hair forever. Not even kidding. Hell even cemo won't kill our hair. My dad for example actually got hairier and it gained it's color back when he was going through it for his lung cancer. It was the damnedest thing we had ever seen. Even his doctors were like WTF!?!?! I wouldn't think of dying my hair. If people can't accept a black headed man with patches of white hair then fuck em I say. lol

Thanks!
![]() I think it looks bad. I don't have anything against white hair when it's more or less uniformly distributed, but on my face it seems to be concentrated in patches (on the sides and on the chin). Another is that this is less than two weeks of growth, so the overall look of the beard should (I hope) improve as it grows and thickens, but I'm not as optimistic about the outcome of the white hair... |

I have grey patches in my beard exactly like yours (in the same spots oddly). The side patches are very noticeable at longer lengths whereas the chin blends a bit better. Is your beard the same shade as the hair on your head? I ask because I had to experiment with beard dye color & time left on the hair to ensure it matched the rest of my beard. At first it ended up darkening my beard slightly but since my beard is lighter than my hair it wasn't a big deal.
Depending on the length and thickness of your beard it'll also likely require weekly maintenance not to show grey. Wouldn't mind the grey so much if it didn't make me look like I was in my 30s. |

I wear beards a lot, as can be seen by my avatar, but they make me look considerably older. I have patches of grey when I grow a full beard, so I do use the special "Just For Men" beard dye occasionally. There's nothing wrong with using it to even out an otherwise full and manly beard. Just make sure to pick a color that's a shade or two lighter than what your hair normally looks like, because once you're dying, it could get a bit too dark too fast.
