If you're just going on their resumes, Riggs wins this going away. It isn't even close. McClane is a tough as nails cop for sure, but Riggs has been through the shit and back again while with Phoenix Company.
I love both movie series, but the last Die Hard took away the elements that made McClane fun, namely a "normal" guy who finds himself in extraordinary circumstances and his resourceful enough to find a way to get by. They turned him into a cartoon character that was just way over the top. Make no mistake, McClane is a bad ass. But Riggs is far beyond that with his weapons and hand-to-hand training. |

Hahah off topic. He never got his bj in the hot tub either. Think she fell asleep, then he went mental. |

McClane is a much more relatable character and fun, but if we were looking at the badassness, it would have to be Riggs.
Let's put it this way: if it were Martin Riggs stuck up in Nakatomi Tower instead of McClane, the terrorists would probably all be dead before Powell had bought his Twinkies. Sure, some hostages may have gotten hurt in the process, but Riggs would have just been sneaking around and snapping necks like no tomorrow. The first (and best) Lethal Weapon is on Netflix Instant. |

They both excel in different areas. McClane is an expert in improvising and dealing with the hand he's dealt. Riggs is a loose cannon and a nutjob (circa Lethal Weapon 1) and could easily have a breakdown at any time. McClane in general I give the nod to, but Riggs is a beast under the right circumstances. McClane's the sure thing.

Riggs would have never allowed his son to be billed as a "bigger badass than his dad"
Riggs wins. |

Not only does Riggs have Murtaugh covering his back, he also has Lorna Cole now. And she can kick just as much ass as Riggs.
McClane had Justin Long as his last sidekick. Riggs wins. Riggs thinks that McClane killed his wife. |

The problem with Lethal Weapon 4 was that there was no script. They just threw it together as they made it, and it showed. It was just a complete mess. The problem with Die Hard 4 was that it turned McClane into just another generic action film hero, and it was completely ludicrous for a Die Hard film. It was Die Hard in name only. |

So him coming seconds away from killing McClane was just a sad joke and a metaphor for how much that movie ruined the series and his character. |

Problem trying to compare is you have the 'Willis' factor. The 'Willis' factor being that any character played by Willis grows exponentially stronger the more he is hurt. Broken glass, car accident/ball gag near rape etc. The more you hurt Willis the deadlier his character becomes.. so I'd go with Riggs if its a quick fight only.

Riggs was tied up, tortured, and electrocuted. Yet he managed to kill his torturer, kill a bunch of other bad guys, and try and chase down a car while barefoot after that. And Riggs is not above driving a car through the front of his partner's house just to get to the bad guy. But whatever poor bad guy is on the receiving end of that fight I feel very sorry for. Funny. It would have worked a lot better as a Lethal Weapon movie. But it would not work so well out in LA where Lethal Weapon always took place. |

Assuming Die Hard 1 McClane vs Lethal Weapon 1 Riggs.
If they were matched in a octagon mma style, Riggs. If they were ANYWHERE else, McClane. DH1 Al vs LW4 Murtaugh w/ argyle ref. That's my PPV. Or maybe Winslow family vs Murtaugh family.

McClane, because Riggs didn't stay his character very long. The original Lethal Weapon had crazy suicidal Riggs and then after the series had character creep with Pesci, Russo, etc and Riggs just got more goofy. I think the John McClane character stays pretty consistent through all the sequels.

I will say that Die Hard has had better villains (in 1 and 3 obviously). But for me:
Die Hard >= Lethal Weapon > Lethal Weapon 2 > Die Hard 3 > Lethal Weapon 4 > Lethal Weapon 3 lolDieHard4 Riggs > McClane all day every day. One on one it would be no contest too. Lethal Weapon 4 had a lovely ending, and there are some definite bright spots like anything involving Leo with the gang and Chris Rock. Or the fight with Jet Li. Or what about that dentist scene with Uncle Benny? haha Pfft. One of the best mane's in Hollywood aside from Tom Cruise's in MI2. |

Riggs hair disqualifies him from everything except best bad hair category.

They've both killed the same number of children though...so maybe it's a toss-up. |

And Lethal Weapon 4 was just goofy. Virtually no plot, half the movie Riggs just being goofy and trying to play off Chris Rock's character as being gay to fuck with Murtaugh, and the movie (and series) end with a an odd 'family' photo in a hospital. Just goofy and completely opposite of the first. |
