'Ted' triumphs with $54 mil at weekend B.O. Second R-rated pic, 'Magic Mike,' also overperforms with $39 mil

Stateside moviegoers displayed few inhibitions toward the weekend's top R-rated counterprogrammers, with Universal's "Ted" grossing a stellar estimated $54.1 million, while Warner Bros.' "Magic Mike" overperformed, collecting $39 million in three days.

"Ted," which exceeded the most optimistic pre-weekend predictions by at least $10 million, scored the highest domestic opening for an original R-rated comedy, besting the $45 million debut for "The Hangover" in 2009.

"Magic Mike," meanwhile, wasn't expected to gross much more than $20 million -- it made nearly that on opening day. Still, a much steeper-than-expected drop for "Mike" on Saturday, down 41% (some bizzers were predicting a 25% drop at the high end), doesn't really bode well for the pic's playability.

Along with the weekend's top players, Lionsgate's Tyler Perry pic "Madea's Witness Protection" also overperformed, grossing an estimated $26.4 million, while Disney-Pixar's "Brave" held OK in its second frame, dropping 49% for an estimated three-day take of $34 million.

The weekend's diverse slate kept Stateside totals even with last year, a tough bar to hit considering "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" debuted to $98 million.

"I was getting calls all weekend long from exhibitors excited about how theaters were hopping across the country," said Lionsgate distrib exec David Spitz.

Struggling in its opening frame, however, DreamWorks' family dramedy "People Like Us" collected a paltry $4.3 million. Pic failed to find an audience -- likely hit by an overabundance of well-received product.

Magic Mike had a budget of SEVEN million. Shit, making some bank.

Saw Ted this weekend and enjoyed it. Not amazing, or even the best comedy of the year (21JS) but a fun movie even for me, who isn't the biggest fan of McFarlane humor.

I saw Ted last night and was surprised how packed the theater was. I have a feeling that it's going to have some legs.

Does this even matter. Almost $40 million opening on a $7 million budget, who cares if it drops.

21 Jump Street proved he has the chops as long as the material is good. He needed to get out of the rom-com dungeon.

I don't watch Family Guy, and I haven't seen Ted, but it amuses me to see how much Ted/McFarlane success frustrates the haters.

also, dat Magic Mike budget. Releasing that in the 50 Shades of Grey era was also a goldmine.

I live in Atlanta, essentially Tyler Perry's home base.
I'm willing to bet about 75% of Madea's Witness Protection's box office take came from this city alone.

Went to see Ted (which was better than I thought it would be), and MY GOD the theater I went to (Regal Atlantic Station 16) was literally full to bursting during the matinee period with people going to see it. Looking at Fandango listings, it has the most showings of any movie right now in any theater in the area.

Not sure that's true. Warner Bros paid $7 million for the US distribution rights. I don't believe there's any budget figures actually floating around.

he, much like Taylor Kitsch, gives really good casting couch. But, unlike Taylor Kitsch, audiences seem to not mind/want to watch Channing Tatum's films. LOL

Yeah normally a celeb would be hush hush about that but he doesn't give a shit and even embraces it. That's prob part of his appeal, along with model-like good looks.

Unlike Kitsch though, Tatum seems to have a bit of comedic talent in him (as exemplified in "She's the Man" and "21 Jump Street". So maybe that appeals to the female audiences?

Dude gained a lot of female fans from The Vow. I know my GF wants to watch Magic Mike as she loved him in T.V.

Made a deal that if we watch MM, she also has to watch TED...which she thinks look crap. It's tough having to deal with her poor taste in movies, actors sometimes.
