What is the best/definitive rhythm/music game?
#1
Excluding rhythm tengoku games as they're brilliant and wouldn't be fair to count against :p (also played them already)
Im looking for the good-for-party games like guitar hero and rock band. Ps3. What would be the definitive game for this? What game has the widest variety of songs? What instruments are the most fun to play? Good multiplayer modes? If i were to buy rockband with 2 guitars for instance would that allow guitar vs guitar multiplayer? So basically the best version out there, setlist, features, gameplay and fun wise? Basically which guitar hero is the best :p UPDATE: Hey GAF, bought Rock Band 3. Awesome game. Looking to buy the rest of the instruments obviously. They are sadly nowhere available as new anymore, so I had to go to secondhand shops to get them. I currently have a few offers available to me which is a complete Rock Band 1 set (RB1 guitar, RB1 mic, RB1 drumkit, game) for 56€/67$. So that's quite a good deal. The thing is, I've done some research and there's alot of things about the quality of the instruments. RB1 instruments tend to break down apparently and the ones i'll be buying are second hand ("although they are in great state" according to the offer) and I looked everywhere and I couldn't find a Rock Band 2 instrument set ANYWHERE (which are supposedly better) What are the best versions of each instruments (I can also get Guitar Hero instruments to work with Rock Band 3)? Does GAF recommend me to go through with the deal, or look for each instrument seperately (Get the best mic somewhere, get a different drumkit, use your own USB mic (does that even work?)) and pay a fucking lot more for something that might break down a bit later? A bit annoying to get

But to answer your question in the OP and not the misleading thread-title: I think Rock Band 3 or Guitar Hero 6 are the best. Only buy other Guitar Hero's if you really like the tracklist, since you can import the music of most of them into 6 if you buy them on the same console. |

If you plan on buying some DLC songs I'd go with Rock Band 3. Best rhythm game made and a huge selection of songs. RB3 is all co-op though. There's no battle modes or anything like that. The best instrument is the drums. Try to get a kit for pro drums if you can.
RB3 + Pro Drums = best game this generation. |

The best music game is Beatmania IIDX. There is nothing else that compares. Whatsoever. Everything else is, at best, a C-Grade rhythm game in comparison.
But to give you something that fits your criteria, your only options are Rock Band and Guitar Hero. |

Rock Band 3 fits your criteria the best.
Even on top of DLC you can boost your tracklist via Rock Band, Rock Band 2, Lego Rock Band, and any one of a bunch of physical track packs with vouchers from AC/DC to country and heavy metal. And they were dirt cheap the other year so should still be mere dollars now given that the rhythm genre has collapsed since then. The only downside to all of that imported content is that none of it has actual keyboard support, but there's still a ton of great stuff for multiplayer. |

You sure? I don't care for most of the artists that feature in the game, but the way the game plays and how fun it is means I can look past that really easily! So much better than Guitar Hero/Rock Band.
Oh and Taiko no Tatsujin is hella fun on PSP, I'm desperate to try the arcade one day!

"What really makes a good rhythm game? More importantly: What makes a rhythm game the best?"
For me: 1) Good, fun, interesting note charts. 2) Music that lends itself well to fun note charts. There are a lot of songs in IIDX that I wouldn't listen to outside of the game, but in the game I enjoy them well enough because they're fun in that setting. 3) Strict, accurate timing windows. This is at least one reason why Rock Band/GH aren't good, the timing windows for those games are *massive* and you can just slop your way through a song. Which leads to... 4) Keysounds. These make a game significantly more engrossing because *when* you press a button matters. You can hear when you're too late or too early. And I don't just mean GH/RB guitar thud, I mean playing the note you were intended to play, but it triggers precisely when you pressed the button, whether that's on beat or off. Probably more if I wanted to go into it, but I'd really just end up describing Beatmania, so... |
