So I recently found a mod that adds world types for those older world generators. I'm using the generator for 1.7.3 beta, but for some reason, I'm not getting anything that looks like my old world. Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing? Is the seed I pull from the world now not the right one? Do I need some other info to use instead? I forget, but wasn't the original terrain seed the time that you created the world or something?
-After typing this up I realized you may all ready know all this, oh well.-

Maps generated in Beta minecraft will have many differences when compared to a map of the same seed generated now. They've messed around with the biome generation over the versions. My home area in my original offline world was a grassy mountain area, now it's a desert biome. Now all the vegetation has that dead/dry look. If I go to the same coordinates in a freshly generated map of the same seed it is nearly recognizable as it's an expansive desert. If you look closely there are certain similarities in the terrain shape.

My NeoCraft build is currently on a forest hills biome. If generated today it would be a jungle biome.

It depends. Most is done the hard way on survival, though moderators can switch modes to creative.

On my builds, everything except those fancy stone blocks and the sticky pistons for my gold farm has been collected the hard way. All my building is done in survival.

Yep. It is way more rewarding to build legit. And it doesn't take as long as you think to collect.

That depends on what you are building with. Harvesting a biome's worth of clay blocks is pretty time consuming. Unless you plan on building in the swamp you have to take into account travel times, slowed movement rates thanks to the water, regular trips back to base to dump loads of clay balls, etc.

I need to locate another swamp. I think I cleared out the one nearby. :/

Believe it or not but Dome City was done "by hand" by me and Crazylegzlu. All the glass in the domes was mined in the usual way and baked in the usual way (nearly 2 deserts were completely destroyed). The base for the domes were originally made up of cobblestone (all 1 million blocks of em) and laid by hand in survival mode (I lost count of how many times I fell to my death). The cobblestone was procured from the huge hole we dug for Xun's Disney castle.

The only "cheating" that I used on Dome City was converting all the cobblestone blocks into Iron when I became a Moderator. I was reluctant to do that but it looked so fantastic using Iron and it was meant to be a futuristic city. If it had been technically feasible I wouldn't have even cheated that way and would have done it the "proper" way but do the maths. The city uses well over 1 million blocks for the bases. That means I would need to mine 9 million blocks of Iron ore.

Before there even were biomes, I had a huge brick house on one of the early NeoGAF servers. Every brick legit. Took hours and hours of searching. The best part of the game is that the fun part is different for everyone. I love the exploring and collection of materials, not so much the building. I'm a good helper to have around on survival servers, always a huge stockpile of whatever, and no intention of building much more than a modest house.

Edit: Domecity is a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL OF CRAZY. I love it.

I have no experience specifically with Magic Launcher, but I've found over the months I've played with mods that it's easier in the long run to install mods manually, at least for me. It helps you understand the complications that occur when you start stacking layers of mods on top of each other.

If you wish to try installing the mods manually, Modloader is installed directly into the minecraft jar file (%appdata%\.minecraft\bin\minecraft.jar) using a program such as WinRAR or 7-zip. Then, the META-INF folder needs to be deleted from the minecraft.jar file using the same program. Finally, the downloaded treecapitater.zip will need to be dragged into the %appdata%\.minecraft\mods folder, which appears after running Minecraft for the first time with Modloader installed.

The majority of the mods on the scene require Modloader as a prerequisite, so you'll find it a nessesary first step for checking out mods.

I don't use Magic Launcher but MultiMC works wonders for me... I have about half a dozen Minecraft installations running - vanilla, most recent snapshot, my bukkit server, my tekkit server, my installation with about 36 mods installed, my installations following various Let's Plays and Challenge Maps, etc. It's really easy to set up and you don't have to deal with Magic Launcher's insistence on using the original unintuitive launcher GUI style. As far as I'm aware (or concerned) it has all of the same functionality if not more, save for the useless Reddit feed built into Magic Launcher.

It's as easy as creating a new instance (just by copying the original) and drag and dropping the mod zip files you download into the interface. The only thing you need to understand is whether or not the mod goes into the JAR tab (mods that install into the JAR) or the MODS tab - and if it needs to be in the JAR tab you have to arrange them in a specific order.

A lot of sweet things, but I tested the latest snapshot yesterday thinking I could already start a new world, and I hope they can smoothen things a bit performance-wise until release because it's far from glorious as it is.

I had half of the area that was visible full of chunk errors that only loaded when I entered them.

Maybe I should consider Optifine if it does not get better until then.

Now for the server, with the current map becoming huge and difficult to work with for mapping purposes and surely other things, and the massive changes in terrain generation and in the game in general, is there any consideration of starting a new map in the near-ish future ? just asking.

So, once I've got Optifine (multi-core version) up and running, which of the billion settings to I need to tweak to make things start running better? Or is it already preset to a good level?

That's a tough call as it would sting quite a bid. I, and many are, would lose a ridiculous amount of work (for some this would be the second time. Personally I don't find the current map hard to work with at all. The problem with the current map size I see is being difficult to create the overhead version. I do admit a server reset will have to be done eventually. Perhaps come 1.5.

There are some real nice changes there. Hardcore servers sound like a blast! I'd last about half an hour, lol.

Although, I am dreading all of the server mods breaking on August 1st... O_o

Do we know more about the villager trading since last snapshot ?
About the thing where they stop trading after a certain amount of trades, is it all the villagers, or the one you traded with only ?

And they are immense too. I actually like the current (normal) size of biomes, gives good variety and I like a regular change of scenery.

I am kinda torn on the issue of having a server reset. The last server reset I was all for it but now thinking back I think we lost way too much. Even today the world we have now isn't close to how fantastic the old world was. I get the feeling another world reset so soon will do more harm than good

The first dome (entrance dome) was finished on 17th October 2011. The final dome which is the Jungle (Foxtrot) Dome was finished on 6th May 2012. So it took around 8 months to get Dome City how it is now.

About the only thing that "disappoints" me with regards to Dome City is the shallowness of the domes (due to the old height restriction). This is one of the reasons why I want to do a Dome City 2 with proper high domes.

Yeah, I want my words to be a bit more like actual worlds...its always kind of jarring for me to walk across a few thousand meters of desert, then a few thousand meters of winter forest, then a few thousand more meters of desert...
Actually, I hope that they'd also tweak how biomes are generated with respect to each other...Winter Forest in particular seems to get plopped down in the most random of places.

I have just loaded our existing Neocraft world into the latest snapshot and everything seems to run fine. However there appears to be a problem with the signs, every single sign is now blank (which is fun for dome city with dozens of directions on these signs).

So if you have anything important written on any signs on the server (such as build dates) then you might want to make a note of them before the update hits sometime in August.

More than likely due to many people not returning after the reset.

Well it should "run better" but if you want to double check bring up the video settins and you will find a whole host of new options you can select courtesy of Optifine.

On another note I just tried the bonus chest in 1.2.7 and I actually laughed out loud. Basically you can start a new world and have the option of a "bonus chest" to help you get started. Well erm they definitely were NOT generous with the bonus chest. All you get is a wooden axe and 3 blocks of unprocessed wood ....... real help that :-p

I know this has been said many times before in this thread and even on this page, but holy poop that dome city is amazing. Even more so that it was, for all intents and purposes, built under Survival limitations. I want to join this server just so I can go look around in awe.

I read the op and I didn't see any specific rules or anything (beyond ones that are common sense and don't need to be stated like no griefing and such) and I'd think it would be weird for me to just barge into the server where no one knows me and start poking around and looking at everyone's buildings, so is there anything I should know if I wanted to join up with you guys?

Nah there are no major rules, it is a pretty laid back place. Obviously we have the standard "don't leave half chopped down trees" and "no single column dirt towers". Other than that just respect the stuff people build and if you use anyone's wheat farms then just replant as a general courtesy.

As for barging in, honestly if you just want to come on and look around but not talk, no one is going to pester you. Usually if someone new comes on and they don't say "hi" I will leave them alone. But it is always nice to have new peeps on the server so never be afraid to say hi, everyone is cool.

If you want to pop on to the server all you need to do is quote the third post on the first page of this topic (server address is there). You can join straight away but you will just be a "visitor" which means you can't do an awful lot except look around. To do more than that you need to be added to the whitelist. Just send a pm to Ark telling him your minecraft user ID and he will add you to the list.

Seems like it will be a killer update.

As for starting over.

No.

No.

Fuck no.

Last time was a mistake to begin with and probably put a lot of people off playing on the server or minecraft in general. We could cull a ridiculous amount of wasted space on the current map though. Maybe after some cutting, put all neocraft maps in one world, would be nice.

I was all for the server reset last time, but at this time I would be completely 100% voting against a server reset. I could see us maybe trimming the map a bit, but I that would be it. I'd rather not have an online map than lose what we've built. And I'm still working on a way to get a new map online, I haven't given up yet.

No, with the changes to world gen and biome data, I see no reason at all to do another reset until the day comes when our map file size is just too big for Multiplay to handle. And we are not there yet. :)

Sigh... i cannot play Minecraft on this laptop for it crashes this every single time i try to play it. Since Beta 1...8? Something like that anyway, and still does. Might be related to overheating but considering i run the game on powersaver mode (so FPS capped to 40 or so) and have limited maximum processor usage and that many other games don't crash my laptop even if they make it run hot is odd.
For some reason, i don't have any hopes of 1.3 fixing this.

I'm going to be a real sad panda if this breaks the blaze grinder on my server. I didn't build it, and the person who did hasn't been around for a couple months. I'm not well versed enough with redstone circuitry to service it myself.
