Same here. After a few listens I can pretty much say that it isn't very good. There is promise in there, but it's a very dim light. Here's hoping for the album!

Well... I'm kind of disappointed tbh... I didn't really get into it. Maybe it'll grow on me?

Hopefully the album will be better.

I really liked "What Ya Waiting For" yet it didn't even crack the top 40 in the US, while "Hollaback Girl" went to #1

Well, I doubt anything they ever do will top "Tragic Kingdom" but I sure wish someone would REALLY PISS Gwen off again so they could at least try to surpass it.

Sorry, not a fan of Gywnn or No Doubt but was/am a huge Bush fan.

Once he married her and she started with her Bannana songs Bush slowly slipped away in relavance till I think they disbanded recently.

To be fair, I've thought that about No Doubt's music since Rock Steady, but then they always manage great live reproductions of their songs. Some of my favorite live stints by ND are from that era.

As for the song, I'm still loving it. Been jamming all day. The chorus is what does it for me, and that sexy 90s lead-out.

Isn't ska music supposed to have lots of horns, and a pretty fast bass? This has neither.

It does seem to lack trumpets / trombones / bass. I'm holding out for the album.

I always considered ska-punk to be an infusion of early Caribbean and 90s punk rhythms and lyrical delivery. The horns are definitely the most recognizable trait, but not a requirement.

Not bad, but not great. I liked their cover of Stand and Deliver they released years ago much more. This sounds like Return of Saturn or Rock Steady era No Doubt. Tragic Kingdom was their best album.

This just sounds like another solo track from Gwen. It's decent, but it's not the sound of a rock band. If they're going to call the music No Doubt, I'd prefer it sound like something that is actually created by a band, not a bunch of producers twiddling knobs.

I don't understand this line of thinking at all.

To the people complaining that this doesn't sound any different than Gwen's solo work, did you...well, actually listen to her solo work?

Probably not, because It sounds nothing like this.

Hell, the very reason Gwen went solo in the first place was because she wanted to do a throwback 80s synth-pop album and the guys were basically like "fuck that shit. Do it on your own."

THAT'S what Gwen's solo-work sounds like.

She didn't do Ska. At all. She BARELY did punk. THIS TRACK is the closest she came to recording anything that even remotely sounded like No Doubt, and it was the third single from her second album that went nowhere.

In short: this song sounds NOTHING like Gwen's solo work. Not even remotely.

Hollaback Girl didn't sound like an 80's synth-pop track. This feels like Gwen-solo stuff in the sense that it's a synthy experimentation with other genres of music.....but obviously it's nothing like Hollaback.

I'd be more than happy if they did stuff like No Doubt's cover of It's My Life.

Hollaback Girl didn't, but tracks like "Crash", "Cool", "Harajuku Girls" and "Bubble Pop Electric" did.

Nor did Gwen really experiment with the same genres that No Doubt did. As I said, she barely touched Ska and Reggae on her solo albums if at all ("Rich Girl" and "Now That You've Got It" come the closest), and that's pretty much what "Settle Down" is.

Honestly, I think the people complaining about this sounding like Gwen's solo work are people who have forgotten that No Doubt was always 99% Gwen's vocals anyway. People didn't mind that when her voice was associated ONLY with No Doubt. But now that she has solo albums under her belt apparently she has to do something different than what she's always done to return to the sound she helped originate?

By the way, don't get me wrong I LOVE their cover of "It's My Life", but how does that not count as synthy experimentation with other genres of music? That's exactly what that song was for the band.

I always kinda counted that song as a Gwen Stefani single though. I mean, the video has her murdering off all the other band members :)

My point was more that if the other band members didn't want to do synth-pop but would sign their names to something like It's My Life, then I'd be more than happy to see future No Doubt songs in the same vein as that song.

If you can't hear the classic No Doubt sound in "Settle Down", you can DEFINITELY hear itin the some of the records you see them working on in this video.

EDIT: Hilarious Youtube comment from the video I linked:
Yes! This is awesome to hear! As I trumpet player myself, I'm so happy to see a pop album with real horns. Beyonce had a lot of 'horn' in it, but I think it was all midi which was a bit disappointing, although a step in the right direction.

I see what you're saying. And it's funny, because the interview I read where Gwen said the guys weren't down for synth-pop she also said that "It's My Life" was the song that made her want to do more of it.

Maybe the guys just weren't down for an entire album of the stuff. :/

If this webisode is any indication. You hear them a lot on the album. This webisode makes me really excited for the album - whatever tracks they're working on here sound straight-up Reggae.
