Has a linear SP game ever had open world MP? #1

Just wondering if something like this exists. If it's possible...

The closest thing I can think of (and it doesn't even qualify) is Chromehouds, due to its semi-persistent world map. But those were just a series of levels/zones like any other traditional game.

Has a dev ever built an open world MP mode for a game designed with linear SP?

only thing i can think of is battlefield, even if it isn't that open world it's certainly a big disconnect from the SP in terms of freedom of movement ect.

I wouldn't call either of those games "linear" though.

Battlefield and maybe Starhawk kind of.

"Open world" is pretty vague, as is "linear". I mean, the way I played it, Red Dead Redemption was a pretty linear game, but it was still "open world"...things can be both at the same time.

What happened to that game where single player levels were also the multiplayer deathmatch levels, so you had do single player missions while avoiding the clusterfuck going on all around you.
