I've been to a bar that played "Closing Time"... in 2012...

I don't think it's possible to play that song ironically.

Nada Surf's Popular is also a great example.
These bands are not really your typical 1-hit wonders. They put out great material afterwards, in particular Nada Surf who has remained popular in music-snob circles.

Blue Monday was a cover.

And Stitches was their first single I think?

Stitches is my favorite of the two, no doubt.

Yeah, Local H is kind of a big deal in Chicago, but not really so anywhere else. It seemed like every other week Q101 would be announcing a show by them at some club when I lived there a few years back.

Also, no to the post above me. Foster the People have had "Helena Beat", "Don't Stop(Color on the Walls)", and "Houdini", and they've all been pretty popular.

Hey, there's another one. "Unsung".

This topic reads like a playlist of WBRU's Retro Lunch.

Soul Asylum keeps getting mentioned, but they had five songs getting regular airplay back in the day. (And in looking up what the titles were I found out a they just released a new album. I'm afraid to listen to see if it's any good.)

My contribution: The Hazies - Skin and Bones

Well I guess since you've never heard it, then that disqualifies it, even though in reality it hit number 5 on the modern rock charts and was technically their first hit. And Blue Monday is a cover, so that's probably why I couldn't place it off the top of my head, but yeah the album Candyass which featured both songs sold 2 million.

Orgy hits that did well:

1st album (1998)
-blue monday
-stiches

2nd album (2000)
-fiction
-opticon

first two albums are very good. then they went into legal hell with their label warnermusic which killed the third album mid production. in 2004 they put out a third album under the lead singer(Jay) and his dads indie label. the album was okay but more rock and light on their future synth sound. a lot of it was created as a side project by jay but converted into an orgy album later on. after that animosity between the band and jays dad created some fallout so the two guitarists Ryan and Amir created a side project Julien-k(NSFW) which released their second album earlier this year.

Orgy was set to return 2008 but jays dad refusing to fuck off put a stop to that. To legally get around that jay released all members from the band giving them the option to come back at any time but until the dad goes away it wont happen. Since then orgy has done a small tour and is working on new material with jay plus replacement members.

Sleep To Dream was also fairly popular and critically well received for Apple. She won the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in a Video at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards and famously said " this world is bullshit. And you shouldn't model your life on what we think is cool, and what we're wearing and what we're saying and everything. Go with yourself." Shadowboxer was also fairly popular and she collaborated with Johnny Cash on a couple of songs (Bridge over Troubled Water and Father and Son, the former was nominated for a Grammy Award).
