When the Pirates optioned Jose Tabata to Class AAA Indianapolis earlier this month it was as a bit of shock treatment. The Pirates were disappointed that the 24-year-old outfielder was hitting .230 with three home runs in 72 games a year after signing a six-year contract that guarantees him at least $15 million. Manager Clint Hurdle also thought Tabata was scared of reinjuring a calf muscle. However, Tabata hasn't exactly responded well to being sent to the minors. Coming into the weekend, he was hitting .255 with five RBIs and two stolen bases in 14 games. More disturbing are the reports from scouts who have watched Indianapolis play in the last two weeks. They suggest that Tabata is giving less than full effort. "He's dogging it," one scout from a National League organization said. "He is jogging down the line when he hits a ground ball. He looks completely disinterested, even more disinterested than when he was in the major leagues. You don't have to watch him long to realize he doesn't want to be there."

The deal is believed to be worth about $27 million over three years and includes a very reachable bonus that could bring the total to $30 million. The Padres' move to sign Quentin is something of a surprise, as he was seen as a prime trade candidate this month. The signing is a big step for the Padres, a low-revenue team that's long been unable to sign stars to multiyear deals due to finances. Padres baseball people overcame the unsettled ownership situation by getting approval for money for the new deal from both the current and presumptive incoming ownership groups, CBSSports.com reported this week. He was avg at best with his velocity around 92-93. Without that he wont be successful.
