I guess calling up Venters early was so he could play cards in the bullpen.

The Dodgers are looking to trade for Matt Garza. That's probably why he ended up getting pulled.

Not sure about us going after him. While we are in need of pitching, we need offense more.

When the Pirates optioned Jose Tabata to Class AAA Indianapolis earlier this month it was as a bit of shock treatment.

The Pirates were disappointed that the 24-year-old outfielder was hitting .230 with three home runs in 72 games a year after signing a six-year contract that guarantees him at least $15 million. Manager Clint Hurdle also thought Tabata was scared of reinjuring a calf muscle.
However, Tabata hasn't exactly responded well to being sent to the minors. Coming into the weekend, he was hitting .255 with five RBIs and two stolen bases in 14 games.

More disturbing are the reports from scouts who have watched Indianapolis play in the last two weeks. They suggest that Tabata is giving less than full effort.

"He's dogging it," one scout from a National League organization said. "He is jogging down the line when he hits a ground ball. He looks completely disinterested, even more disinterested than when he was in the major leagues. You don't have to watch him long to realize he doesn't want to be there."
Fucking useless Tabata...

Of course I have work the night the Cardinals completely romp the Cubs. Shame I missed it, but got to see a few replays. Told you this was a big series.

As for the Rays, stinks we lost, but it was only by one run, but actually that also stinks, because that just shows how terrible our offense can get at times. Longoria can not come back soon enough.

I kind of wish the Reds would realize they don't have Votto and start sucking.

Both the Pirates and Reds are going to stay hot, we play mediocre teams until we face each other in the beginning of August.

Power-hitting outfielder Carlos Quentin and the Padres are on the verge of completing a extension that will keep him in San Diego and take him off the trade block, people familiar with the talks told CBSSports.com.

The deal is believed to be worth about $27 million over three years and includes a very reachable bonus that could bring the total to $30 million.

The Padres' move to sign Quentin is something of a surprise, as he was seen as a prime trade candidate this month. The signing is a big step for the Padres, a low-revenue team that's long been unable to sign stars to multiyear deals due to finances.

Padres baseball people overcame the unsettled ownership situation by getting approval for money for the new deal from both the current and presumptive incoming ownership groups, CBSSports.com reported this week. The Padres viewed Michael Cuddyer, Edwin Encarnacion and Josh Willingham as fair comps for Quentin. All received three-year deals.

The Padres also received the go-ahead from ownership to try to lock up star closer Huston Street, who also has been seen as a prime trade candidate this month.
One new issue with trading a player who's free-agent eligible is that the acquiring team doesn't receive benefit of a draft choice upon losing the acquired player.

Street, who had drawn interest from the Mets, Giants and Dodgers, is said to have an interest in staying in San Diego after making his first All-Star team this year. Quentin, a two-time All-Star is a San Diego product who was a three-sport star at University of San Diego High before going to Stanford.

Quentin had been viewed as perhaps the most accomplished middle-of-the-order hitter on the trading block, and several teams had inquired about him, including the Reds, Indians, Pirates, Giants and many others. The market for power hitters is extremely thin right now, but could open up if the Phillies, Brewers and Marlins decide to become sellers (Hunter Pence, Aramis Ramirez, Corey Hart and Hanley Ramirez are players who could be dealt in that event).

Quentin made an immediate impact upon being activated by the Padres this year following his recovery from offseason knee surgery and has nine homers, 22 RBI and a .273 batting average. He was acquired by San Diego last winter for two minor leaguers.

The Oakland Athletics woke up on June 11th 9 games under .500 and 8.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot, but since then they have the best record in baseball. The A's have relied heavily on strong pitching and clutch hitting as they are now in a 3-way tie for the final Wild Card spot.

I've been screaming why Hefner isn't up to be the #5 (or #4) earlier, he doesn't have the consistency to relieve but he can start.

He was avg at best with his velocity around 92-93. Without that he wont be successful.
