since this thread was brought back from the past, might as well.

i got a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152290
Quote:
SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 HN-M750MBB 750GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive
in my ps3slim since last year
i got it for $50 before the harddrive price got jack up.

dont be alarm when you format and get 698gb reading on the ps3. there's unit conversion from 8bit to 1bytes and system file storage lost. thus 698gb free space left.

the harddrive is still live and kicking! tho the recent reviews does not seem so pleasing for the new shipment.

Did anyone put in a SSD in their PS3?

The reason I am asking is because I have a 60 GIG unit and it gets hot, I am thinking if I swap to SSD it will not generate as much heat.

This gives a good idea of the performance change provided:
http://www.hardcoreware.net/ssd-on-p...ormance-guide/

Sounds like installs off of discs are much improved, but about no difference installing from a PSN download. Deleting files also massively improved in wait times.

Doesn't go into how games load times are affected or heat differences, but since there isn't moving parts, I'd say heat should be drastically reduced.

So I decided to upgrade my HDD. Replaced 320GB with 750GB. Backed up data on external drive (250GB worth of data). After replacing the hard drive, I am now restoring.

Holy shit, it's been 7 hours and only 8% is done. It's saying that 54 more hours to go?! That's fucking long!

Am I doing something wrong?!

Sounds like it. I dunno though. 8% in 7 hours is fucked up.

Can you stop it and retry?

edit: Wait are you downloading something on your PS3 as you were doing the backup?

I was not downloading something on the PS3, no (though my brother did turn off the PS3 at one point during backup so I had to start all over again). I can stop and retry it but if it's the same shit then I might as well wait it out. 12% as of now. Seriously though, I can redownload all my games faster than this.

Oh well, if by the end shit ends up being corrupted file then fuck it. I'm glad I have PS+ though with all my save files backed up.

This thread got bumped just in time!

Looking to upgrade my Slim's 160 factory HDD to probably about a 500GB unit. A few questions..

1. Does RPM count make a significant difference? I'm speaking in terms of games and their load speeds. I was looking at the standard 7200RPM drives, but then would a 10k RPM drive load stuff faster? In turn, however, does a higher RPM generate extra heat inside the system?

2. Are there any benefits of a 16MB cache size versus 8MB?

3. What is this I'm reading about SATA, SATA 1.5, 3, etc? Am I fine with a default SATA?

4. Do I have to upload any sort of info (trophies, etc) to Sony/PSN before doing the big transfer?

5. The OP says 9.5mm in height. Some drives I'm browsing say 9.4mm. Will this be a problem?

6. Would it be wise to have the latest firmware (in this case 4.21) saved to a portable drive (in a PS3->UPDATE folder) when I first format the new drive?

These are all I can think of so far. Thanks in advance.

Are you planning to do a system backup so you don't lose anything, or just going to upgrade drives and use PS+ so you don't lose any locked save files (that's what I did so I had a fresh drive entirely).

1) I think it's quite insignificant. Probably not worth added heat of faster moving mechanicals.

2) Probably negligible difference, haven't found any research on that topic.

3) PS3 SATA is 1.5, you can generally use 3.0 drives though. Some automatically correct to 1.5 and others you have to apply a HDD jumper pin to set it.

4) Do sync your trophies, if PS+, all the game saves you care about.

5) being smaller, by a small margin I think it's safe. Had it been larger, I'd say don't try it.

6) yeah, have it on hand. Slim will need it if doing a fresh start.

2. Most of the drives I'm looking at are 16MB, so I guess I'll just go that route.

One more question, how do licenses transfer? Is it like the 360 where if I'm offline I can't play PSN games I've bought on another HDD?

Thanks again for the swift response. :)

I put an Intel 320 80 gig SSD in my PS3. It doesnt generate as much heat as it used to, I can definitely tell, but I don't know exactly how much.

If you don't care to store a bunch of stuff on your PS3, and you don't mind spending like $1 a gig, and you don't mid reformatting ever 6 or 12 months, I'd totally recommend dropping an SSD in there.

4. You will be able to back up most of your saves, however with "copy protected" saves, these can only be transferred to cloud storage on PS+.

Regarding licences, you are allowed a limited number of console activations with your PSN account, letting you play the titles bought on that account on activated systems. 5 activations for games bought before (I don't know when lol), then 2 for games bought after that date. You can play them simultaneously on those consoles, and can activate/deactivate consoles as you wish.

Why would you reformat every 6-12 months?

Most modern ssds have internal garbage collection.

Shit. Most game saves are copy protected, I gather. Maybe I'll just pay for a one month PS+ sub and go that route. There's some stuff I really don't want to risk losing.

And by console activation, does that mean alternate hard drives too? Technically I'm not changing systems, just hard drives. Unless of course Sony counts a new HDD as a new activated system.

I believe he'll have to do a full system backup instead of just a fresh hdd upgrade.
system backup should bring over everything including saves. Requires a big enough external hdd or thumb-drive to cover all the space that you're currently using on the PS3 though.

If you go that route, you don't have to worry about re-downloads or anything.

I have a 250GB portable hdd. Maybe that'll work? Or should I just say fuck it, and use PS+ to Cloud-migrate everything?

This is correct, I didn't consider it.

You can delete some game data/videos to make the process go faster/take up less space (if you don't mind redownloading/copying the stuff you deleted once you put the new HDD in).

A thread with some more info: http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/gen...es-backup.html

And yes, changing the hard drive does not count as an activation - this data is stored on the console's internal memory along with the system software.

Just ordered this:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16822136856

With the coupon it came to $78, shipping in.

Looking forward to the extra space! With MGS4 coming as a full install, and a few other PS3 games to download, it'll be nice to have the extra space.

I may bump this thread when the drive arrives, as I want to make sure this goes off without a hitch. :)

Am I right in thinking the largest capacity drive that one can put inside a PS3 fat/slim is currently 1.5TB (the largest capacity 2.5" drive at the moment)? Anyone have any success with this size drive?

There's still a good number that don't (like the intel 320 series).

If your SSD has good garbage collection, it's probably not a concern. If not, performance degradation would potentially be a concern.

Frankly, I don't know enough about how the PS3 OS works in conjunction with an SSD so I don't know at what point the performance hit would occur, but 6 or 12 months seemed like a safe number.

Slow drive. Go maximum of 750GB for 7200RPM. Unless of course you are loaded and can afford the $500+ 1.5TB 7200RPM drives, don't get it.

With that said, FINALLY after 3 days my PS3 restored settings/data... :/

Hey guys, I am looking to upgrade my HDD. Am I correct in my assumption that I can just put all my saves on the PS+ cloud, and redownload everything I have through the PSN store?

So I won't have to back up anything?

I have a fatty 60gb. From reading the OP, I think I just have to put the latest firmware on a USB stick, and then install it on the new drive.

I think I am going to get this one.

That's what I did. Saves to PS+, re-downloaded all the games and what nots that I wanted on the new drive.

You might not even need to download the latest firmware since you're on a PS3 fat, but have it handy in case it asks. The slim versions just don't store the full firmware.

Brought my PS+ saves that I needed back over. Done.

Also re-purposed my old PS3 120GB drive (it's now a backup drive):

LittleBigPlanet and GT5 save certain data in the program file. So you can't recover much of that info if you're counting on PS+ to do it for you. I just ate the bullet and went that way though.

GT5 is just your pictures/videos you've saved and maybe a few other things.
LBP/2 is largely based in that game file though.

I don't know about GT5, but in LBP1&2 you can export everything in the game data file to a proper save so you can back it up. It's in your profile settings, select the backup profile option. It works great unless you forget to do it when doing a full backup on a dying system (didn't actually lose much though).

And done!

Was much, much simpler than I was expecting.

1. Paid the $17 for 3 months of PS+ for Cloud Saves (the price discounts on games are just icing)

2. Uploaded all my saves to Cloud, copy-protected or not

3. Signed out of PSN, shut console down, etc.

4. Swapped hard drives (ridiculously simple, had no problems with screws that OP mentioned)

5. Formatted

6. Done. 500GB of space to work with now!

Props to Sony for making the PS3 so damned flexible. It's a shame that, in light of last year's hacking fiasco, the eventual PS4 may not be as 'open', so to speak. It's so nice being able to just dump all my media back onto the system via a portable USB drive. Try doing that shit with a 360...

I updated my HDD last night as well. A WD 750GB. It was very simple actually. I thought it would be more so for some reason.

I guess becasue I have a fatty, it kept all my account info intact after it formatted the new drive. Didn't have to redo anything.

Re-downloaded all my games from PSN without a problem. For some reason though, Rag-Doll Kung Fu doesn't show correctly as downloaded before.

Also, I totally forgot about this as well. They took the original Mortal Kombat 2 off the PSN store, so I couldn't re-download it. I should had backed that up on a USB drive. I don't really want to buy the MK kollection.

What sucks though is only being able to download 1 save every 24 hours from the PS cloud backup thing. Pretty dumb.

no no no.
You read wrong friend.

The issue is that what you upload to the cloud isn't available for download for 24 hours. You can download all the saves you want once the particular save has been uploaded for 24hours+

I put my old PS3 drive into an enclosure, but my Vista PC won't show it properly. I go to disk management, and it shows up there. But there is no option to reformat it or partition it.

Anybody know how to do it?

What options do you have for the drive in Disk Management?

I was able to format mine in there with Windows 7. Just had to give it a drive letter as well. If it gives you the option to mount the drive, do that, then it should give the option to format.

When I right clicked on the drive, all the options were grayed out. I am in Vista.

Just as a side, I went to some PS message board and somebody recommended a program called "swissknife".

I worked. It saw the drive, and formatted and partitioned it and I was good to go and I am using it now.

Hi guys.

I've been looking into replaceing my 120Go HDD and found out this WD Blue Scorpion 500Go :
http://www.discount-micro.fr/product...?prodid=172103

Do you think it's a good choice? It's definitely the cheapest I've found this drive to be (stealth edit: or not, I just realized the price was without the taxes, something they usually never do in France...) and I'm (not so) ready to order but I'd like an opinion from people who know better than me what's good for a PS3! Thanks.

(I'm still interested in the drive, or in better recommendations!)

Alright, so I'm finding myself running out of space way too often, especially after PS+.

Which kind of hard drives should I look at? How many GBs can the PS3 read?

EDIT:
Forget it, I should read the OP.

So 2.5" for PS3 Slim as well.

Thanks.

I have the 1TB version of the WD Blue Scorpion drives. Works great, imagine you'll be fine with that one.

OK after doing system restore some of my themes read 'Corrupted Data', does this mean the restoration was not done properly?
Furthermore I can't see my brother's PS account after the restore.
Should I do the Restore option again?

I've got Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB (232GB usable space), 7200rpm and 16MB cache right now, and I'm looking for another upgrade as the recent PS+ games have eaten up almost all of the space. What would be the best and most reliable option? The bigger the better, as I don't want to get another HDD in a while. =)

Guys, FUCK the blue screw. Tried three different PH screwdrivers, and used needle nose pliers and the thing will not fucking budge. I'm at a loss here.

This is a fat 60gb, by the way.

Do I have to format new hard drive to fat32 before putting it in console?

I mean internal, I know external must be formated to fat32.

The PS3 will format it to a proprietary system.

Thanks I read on other forum that ps3 doesn't format to fat32 by itself. Glad it's bs.

Thanks to Plus, MGS4, and my Vita backsups, I might spring for that WD 7200 RPM 500 Gig listed above next month.

I currently have 200 gigs at 7200 RPM, but I only have 12 remaining (and that's after deleting Red Dead, Bioshock, and MGS4).

Fucking blue screw. Nothing works.

edit: and I finally get it. Used an obtusely too large screwdriver and used all my fucking muscles. Surprised that worked cause it was basically stripped from my prior attempts.
