One of them has 769,985 replies. The other has 185,787.

The answer is, of course, 40. Yet the vast majority of the replies are completely wrong and it makes me sad. I don't even understand how people are getting some answers. People are guessing basically everything from 20 to 50.

All it requires is a basic ability to count. How are people so bad at that?

I would have guessed 16 because I see the lines as cuts and not as whole boxes. For example, the second and third column only have four boxes each, since the "bigger" boxes are cut.
