Everything Carmack is saying is breaking my heart. Rage was awesome. Flawed? sure, but VERY good. Dissolving the mobile game division - despite making money - to focus on games that hit it out of the park for Bethesda is lamentable. When Carmack is excited to tinker with fun, quick-out- concepts that play in the mobile world, we get great stuff like RAGE on iOS, and gaming is better for it. Until RAGE, we didn't even think iOS could push those kinds of graphics!
But the thing that's REALLY killing me is that he's saying that he's acknowledging the difficulty level in older games when compared to newer games, and compensating accordingly. WTF?@! Doom 3 was many things, but NOT hard. The ammo-stinginess and darkness was what made DOOM 3 so appealing. This...'push', it seems, by Bethesda, to make the games more (and these are my own words) "accessible", is very disturbing. Rage, for all of it's faults, was the best 'feeling' shooter I've played in YEARS. ID makes games that PLAY right. IF Bethesda is taking away their slavish devotion to fidelity and performance (albeit slow), their 'hardcore' feel, and their fun side projects... ..Now I'm VERY concerned. I really like Carmack, both as a person and a visionary genius. I wish he was a Valve. Seriously. And I'm a console guy. |

yeah its a little sad to hear him talk about this. its pretty obvious that he always just wanted to program and Romero + their little team is what made such great games. now he has a big team of people that lead to something as mediocre and muddled as Rage, and I don't expect much from Doom 4

Hearing Carmack speak always gives me the weirdest boner
The leaked Doom 4 pictures didn't look like the doom I've been waiting for and proper reassessment all-around was seemingly needed. I'd claim id still has the most say in the big design philosophy decisions and such so I'm not that worried about it.

So it would be likely he's been talking with at least Microsoft about it for a long while now |
