Thanks dude. We usually pay about that in the UK anyway. In fact sometimes my local game shop is cheaper than online!

1st edition of Descent is exactly what we were looking for after being disappointed by 2nd edition. We played for 3 and a half hours today and only made it to the 2nd area of the dungeon, eventually losing to the overlord but everyone was ready to go again afterwards.

Why is nearly everything about this game so expensive/hard to find :(

If you use the voucher exchange (£5 ==> £10) with the clubcard vouchers it costs even less, essentially £8.
It's nuts.
They got TTR and TTR Europe and Dixit in around christmas, but I never saw them in the stores.
I have TTR Europe otherwise I'd have been on it like a shot.

Now it's not a Descent 2nd Edition situation, older Thunderstone sets (i.e. those simply labelled Thunderstone: Bla of Bla) are, technically, compatible with Thunderstone Advance. However they cleared up a lot of artwork, iconography, concepts and so on with the new sets so mixing old and new will require a bit of work. Perfectly do-able though. For example Diseases (a card which gave a fixed -1 penalty to attack) was changed to Curses (variable penalties). The titular thunderstones (if it turns up the next monster defeated, no matter how easy, ends the game) were changed to Thunderstone guardians (essentially boss monsters). All the changes are much better imo, I've just not picked up Thunderstone Advance yet.

Thanks for all the advice! The cheapass in me was tempted to go with the older sets since they seem to be in firesale, but I grabbed Thunderstone Advance. Can't wait for it to get here and see how we like it"

Seriously though, thank you for all the guidance.

Tesco's clubcard voucher exchange. You get 'rewarded' with clubcard vouchers for regular grocery shopping with tesco, and every so often they send you for example, £10 in vouchers which can be used in store or online.
You can wait for the voucher exchange where you can double the value of some of the vouchers in Tesco/Toys or Tesco/Furniture or Tesco/Wine or whatever (you specify the department).
Then your £10 will buy you £20.

Ordered a game off Tanga which advertises on BGG, even with shipping it was cheaper than anywhere else and figured why not. 3 weeks later now and it just shipped despite getting a shipping notice 2 weeks ago. Yea don't think I'm going to be using them again any time soon.

It was my pleasure. I really like Thunderstone, and think it's the best of the genre personally. It even has a solo tower defence mode, co-op, tournament rules, themed sets, scenarios, loads going for it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

That's their M.O. They buy bulk copies super cheap, get 4-500 orders right away and then take forever to process them.

They are normally selling junk games as well, though TMG seems to be using them as a pre-release discount of sorts with a small number of their new titles available for cheap.

Tanga is really at it's best with group orders. Since the shipping cost is the same for 6 copies you can get killer deals.

Ok,

After much thinking and ruminating.. I've decided to order Merchants and Marauders as my "epic" game. I've played it twice and found it to be a fun game that scratches the right itch without insane playtime and a player count that is good enough.

Game of Thrones is probably all I really need for a wargamy thing. I like the idea of Eclipse/Runewars and similar but would never play them. Same reason I passed on Civ a few years ago. Great game I'd love to play, but would never actually happen.

I'm going to plug in Risk:Legacy to the order as well.

As an aside, if I like the idea of Troyes but want something with less symbology does anyone have recomendations? I'd like a nice dice pool game that isn't so focused on symbols that will turn off everyone who might ever play the game with me. I own Stone Age, but looking for something with more roll modification stuff and not just adding the pips together.

I recommend getting over it :p Troyes is just that good.

But, if you insist.... have you played Castles of Burgundy?

Kingsburg has pretty basic roll modification (+2 tokens you can acquire, and a building that gives you the ability to +1/-1 to any die) and it would definitely play to a crowd for whom Troyes is too heavy. If you grab the expansion as well it's actually a moderately deep light game. Little bit more meat to it than Stone Age and Waterdeep.

The problem is I don't want a game that is lighter than Troyes.

I want a game that doesn't use completely obtuse symbology that is unique for almost every single card. I'm pretty sure a good chunk of the cards in the game have their own symbol that doesn't really appear elsewhere but is supposed to mean something.

Assuming you have memorized all of them.

I have 250$ of in store credit available to me at my local board game shop. I'm considering the following:

Dreadfleet
Ghost Stories
Descent 2nd Edition
Castle Ravenloft or any of the other 2 D&D board games
Gears of War Board Game

Any thoughts on which of the D&D games are the best?

I've looked at it and Ascending Empires both.

I'd like to play them to see if they have the feel I'm going for.

I know people who own both games. I've tried to get them to play the games with me several times, and each time right as we're about to play someone says "why don't we just play Troyes?"

Everyone turns on me.

Then we play Troyes.

Have you looked into Lords of Vegas? Awesome game. There are dice, but they represent your influence in casinos that are built and expanded throughout gameplay. The way dice are used work extremely well with the theme of the game.

I know it isn't the complex bit of gaming we're used to here, but I played Fluxx for the first time last night, and boy is that one confusing ass game sometimes. Had a rules question though. If a card makes it so there are now 2 goals, and the radioactive potato is out, when initially a 2nd goal is placed, is that considered the goal changing?

Also looking for more games my girlfriend's family might play, and Dice Tower is discussing Hey That's My Fish as a good gateway game. It's cheap enoug on Amazon that I'll impulse purchase, but want to know whether I should go with the regular or Deluxe version for like $7 more. If anyone has experience with it I'd appreciate any thoughts.

It's like Pandemic in a way, up to 6 player coop. Fun game and worth your time. $25 on the kickstarter gets you both expansions and te 6 fire fighter figs which replace the cardboad tokens used in the original base game.

It's very much like Pandemic, only Flashpoint Fire Rescue has REPLACED Pandemic in my library. Pandemic had a tendency of coming to a complete halt while people calculated how to win in their heads, at the end of the game.

Flashpoint negates this by "spreading the disease (which is fire)" by using dice, rather than a deck (where you can see how many cards/turns are left).

My group loves Flashpoint Fire Rescue but if you don't like the random nature of dice, keep that in mind

The kickstarter is just for the expansions.

The game you have to buy separate and is available in most online retailers now.
