NBC & ABC Team Up To Develop 'Cleopatra' Drama Series #1

Quote:
NBC Unearths a 'Cleopatra' TV Show

ABC Studios and NBC team up for a potential period series that sounds more like "Xena" than a historical drama.

The legendary Egyptian queen, Cleopatra has been featured in several TV shows and films — including the 1963 Cleopatra movie starring Elizabeth Taylor (pictured above) — and a fixture in popular culture. But she's never been the main subject of a television show... until now.

According to Deadline , ABC Studios has struck a deal with NBC to develop "Cleopatra" as a weekly series. As per the reported "put pilot" agreement, NBC must air the "Cleopatra" pilot or pay a substantial fee.

The historical Cleopatra was the last pharaoh of Egypt who famously had affairs with both Julius Caesar and Mark Antony before her country fell under the control of Rome. Cleopatra's suicide upon learning of Antony's death has also contributed to her lasting mystique.

NBC's "Cleopatra" is described as "an epic romance set in a world of sorcery, gods and monsters that centers on Cleopatra, Mark Antony and Julius Caesar. The young queen makes a sacred pact with a goddess to win back her throne, igniting a curse and an infamous love triangle that changes the course of history, forever ending the 4,000 year dominion of the Pharaoh."

It's not currently known how closely the series will follow the original legend, but the description does seem to indicate a fair amount of fantasy elements within "Cleopatra."

Michael Seitzman is attached to write the "Cleopatra" pilot and executive produce the project alongside Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Dan McDermott.

Don't know how I feel about this.

David Fincher will soon be directing a remake of the 1963 motion picture Cleopatra, this time starring Angelina Jolie.

I have a feeling NBC/ABC are also going to completely whitewash their Cleopatra.

Not to mention it's on commercial television and not say Starz/HBO, so clearly no nudity and nothing too gruesome.

A sci-fi/fantasy take on Cleopatra could be cool, but I don't think it should be a network show. I think it would be much better suited to cable.

It's just a script, there's a good chance no one here will ever see it, not sure if every single new script bought needs a new thread.

NBC and ABC working together in tandem for something like Cleopatra seems unprecedented

I never actually watched an entire episode, but I always saw the end of them since it came on before Jack of All Trades (Bruce Campbell show) during a syndication block at like 2AM on a Sunday for my local ABC station.

No, that's not what this means. It's not ABC the network. It's ABC the studio.

.....which will be canceled halfway through the first season. NBC has gone from being the HBO of network TV to being shit for the most part. Only comedies you can find on the station now.

NBC should just bring back Seaquest DSV and ABC can bring back whatever the hell it is it does.

Now I wish AMC had picked up, Cleopatra.
They're sort of hit-and-miss as of late though.

Bring back Rubicon!
It started so slow, but the buildup to the finale was so freaking awesome. Such a shame most people bailed on it leading to AMC cancelling it.

See, now that is a blatant cry for help. Don't throw away your life, man. SeaQuest is not the solution. There are always better alternatives.

I don't see the point. It won't have the authenticity and meticulous attention to detail of Rome or the depth and style of the upcoming Fincher film.
