Gaf, I want to rip my movie collection to a media center. help? #1

I have too many physical movies Gaf. They're everywhere. On the coffee table, on the floor next to the PS3, out of order on my DVD racks. I'm sick of it.

If anyone on gaf has done this please give me some tips!

Here's what I have:

200+ dvd/blu ray (plus 3d)
OG apple tv (160gb)
2009 13" Macbook Pro

Now I know I can use XMBC on the apple tv, but as far as ripping the movies, what's the best/fastest way to do that?

What about cover art?

What about TV seasons?

I need help, gaf! I'm buried in dicks! I mean discs!

Edit: I know I'll need a blu ray drive for my mac. any suggestions?

it is worth the effort, not sure what the guide says but I used handbrake and converted everything for itunes and use a minimac server and appleTVs.

Only tricky part was ripping my blurays, had to use an old laptop with a usb bluray drive since the mac wont read blurays.

edit:

I am sure there is a simpler way, I kept everything in itunes so it would also work with my iPads, iphones and MacBooks.

There's a way to run DVD Shrink on a mac but i'm not sure if you'd be better off just getting something mac-specific instead. I don't really know anything about macs

don't even know if this guide is still relevant, most of the stuff I found about this from a quick search was really old

I personally used MakeMKV and converted using Handbrake. It's not a fast process however.

EDIT: Just saw your using Mac. Not sure if those program's are available on Mac.

Thanks for the replies! I've been looking into xmbc on the old apple tv but not sure if I would just be able to connect a 2-4 TB hdd for storage of if I'll actually have to store them on a mac mini or something with software.

Get a big hard drive, hook it up to your network.
Then just rip all your discs to pure ISO-files, in 2012 we have enough space so we don't have to recompress and lower the quality.
For ripping you could install Windows through Bootcamp on your Mac (Preview-version of Win8 should be sufficient for this) and use AnyDVD for the ripping.

If you use xbmc, that'll take care of all your cover art for all your media.

For TV seasons, just put each series in its own folder and make sure you follow the S01E01 format in the name of each file.

You may want to ditch the apple tv if you have a large percentage of blurays and want to maintain the quality. As far as I am aware the apple tv 3 is the only hardware with proper 1080p capabilities and is still currently un-jailbroken.

If you really want to do this right, just get a WDTV for playback purposes.
