The creator is called Christof. "ch-ris-tof, chr(i)-stof\ as a boy's name is a variant of Christopher (Greek), and the meaning of Christof is "bearing Christ"." bear·ing 1. the manner in which one conducts or carries oneself, including posture and gestures. So he is a fake Christ, or demiurge, creator of the material world:
Quote:
At the end of the movie they try to prevent him from escaping by setting some road on fire (among other disasters). Hell is used by the demiurge to dissuade people from seeking the truth. Etc.

I've actually vacationed twice in the town where the movie is filmed, and seen the "Truman House". It's not actually a small town with nothing around it. It is a small town by the ocean, though. Seaside Florida. Place is amazing. |

Of course Truman was falsely imprisoned. You can count attempted murder by huge tidal waves too.
God, as much as I loved the movie and have become paranoid about everyday life after watching it, what an effed up situation. And what a terribly boring reality show it would be this day and age. |

Well, the whole point of the movie is to bring up and discuss questions of freedom and agency: is freedom more than being able to do what you want without coercion? (As in, if Truman had happily engaged in his life in the show until his death, would he have been free all up until that point?) It asks the exact same questions as The Matrix, only with a less technological analogy.
Personally, I think that freedom demands, in part, access to choice, but I'm actually finding it quite hard to articulate why.

In the film one of the audience (the cops) comments how "they never get to see anything" when Truman has sex. The camera moves to an open window and they play music instead. I assume Meryll (his wife) discouraged a wild sex life with Truman.
It was more than likely the same for when Truman masturbated. |

I genuinely used to do this/think this when I was a kid. Crazed narcissism.

Hm, you know what?
I don't think he was actually falsely imprisoned up until the point where the gig was up and they sent a storm at him to stop him from leaving. Up until that point, he was staying in that town voluntarily and without coercion even if there was a lot of social pressure - but that's true for everyone. |

It's obvious that they royally screwed up by teaching him that there was a world out there past the island. The place where they're keeping him needs to literally be the only place that exists to him.
Of course it's hard to avoid "made in China" tags and explaining the breadth of products available to buy, but oh well. They could've put him on an alien planet, if they wanted. Made up a new language. Put a glowing crystal on the top of every car and tell him that's what powers them, and show him the mines where they harvest the crystals. |

Man, these "gang stalking" videos on youtube make me really sad. Most of the comments even encourage them into thinking they are stalked everywhere they go. They accuse random people of stalking them, think that their entire neighborhood is wired and filmed just to harass them and give tips on how to shield yourself from heat-, sound- and microwaves. Phew, that must be tough.
