Some of the posts in this thread are ridiculous. "I went to preorder a fairly obscure Japanese ps3 exclusive, and the guy asked what platform I wanted it on! Can you believe that? He didn't have an encyclopaedic knowledge of every release, it's date, and what platform it was on! Man, what an idiot!" Dude, he obviously has no interest, and is just paying the bills, lighten up!

avg starting earning is around 1,2k for neograd so being at 2k after 1yand a few months, I consider a good achievement.. For reference an high school teacher (my dad) earns lil more than 2k eur at the end of his career (7 years to retirement), my mom earns 1,8k and is as well past mid-career so I consider myself quite lucky :) Plus i work (usually 2-3 hours sparse during the whole working days, and 4-5 hours both saturday and sunday) both as a freelance android developer and as an ios analyst.. though truth be told when I develop for android it's usually a 1-man team (much more profitable, given that you need an ample enough codefolio that you can start recycling general purpose stuff you develop), I'm skilled enough that given nothing too groundbreaking I can come up with the whole thing on my own save the sign-off testing, on the other hand when i develop for ios it's as part of a team since whilst I'm decent at coding for ios, I'm nowhere as good as I'm with droid, so for ios project I serve as the analyst and must cover an high-level design document, I rarely cover the code myself.. So my final income after this stuff is definitely not 2k, 2k is my "main work" earnings :) That being said, yeah he sounded a nice guy till he offered me those peanuts :P Make no mistake differently from most graduate in Italy I've been actively working as a paid freelance for my univ teachers in my field during my latest year of graduation, so really 600 eur is way too low :) Personally I consider working at a shop as a cashier or work like that something that non-grad should cover, but in the real world you can often see grads being complete idiots so go figures (I've interviewed a kid fresh out of univ, IT field, that didn't develop anything, didn't try anything and just studied and did the exams.. It felt wrong, for in the it field you need to have a thirst for knowledge, you have to strive for making something better than it is, etc. If you lack those qualities, simply put you can be at best a monkey that follows specifications without ever adding anything of value to the project). |

I was told I could do the 3DS system transfer using local wi-fi only with no need to be connected online. (this was Grainger games)
When I explained to the guy the actual process he said that wasn't the case. So I went across the street to GameStation and bought the system there, where they had nice printed leaflets explaining the transfer process and the trade-in deal. I bought my XL and then a week later traded my 3DS. I did consider taking the GameStation flyer into Grainger and being a bit of a jerk telling the guy that his ignorance cost them a sale... but I fought the urge. I'm only a jerk on the inside. |

But seriously, if you ask someone working the register when game xyz is coming out, chances are they are going to look on their computer for the answer (if the date of that game isn't plastered all over the store...in which case people will still ask) and give the answer that they have. If it's wrong for what ever reason, it isn't the damn grunts fault. |

The GameStop a few blocks from me is actually not that bad. The guys are all gamers and will leave you alone after asking if they can help unless you initiate a longer conversation.
But one time (probably in February or March of 2011) one of the clerks was telling another customer that there would be no new Call of Duty game that year. I am not the kind of person who jumps into arguments about video games, but my curiosity forced me into it. I said something like "really? why not?" and he was like "you didn't hear about all the mess that happened at Infinity Ward?" I explained that I had heard about that but that I was pretty sure Activision wasn't going to let 2011 slip by without a COD release. He was adamant. "I guarantee there will be no new Call of Duty game this year." I went in several months later, he was hyping the MW3 trailer. LOL. |

I worked at the video game section of Carrefour. I had lots of stupid questions asked (mostly the "do you ha super mario bros on ps3? I know im right because my kid played super mario bros on a ps3 at his friends house" and "do you sell pirated cards to download free my games? I know x store does it, why dont you do it aswell"), and even be threatened by a spanish version of the jersey shore guys because he had a PS3 that after 2 years couldnt read games, and we couldnt do nothing only give him sony's number to call. He tried to hit me once, and then after 10 minutes he calmed down, started to be too friendly (he started treating me then like if we were best buddies or something), and after deciding it was sony's fault he said he was going to get his car, go all the way to the sony offices in Barcelona and hit the guys there. Ah yes, and a 12 year old mexican kid entered once the game section with his mother, sat on the floor and started to take a big piss. The mother instead of telling him off started to laugh and scream at us what where we waiting to clean the corridor. |

IDK, main thing they always ask is if I want to preorder a game, and I say no thank you, and they say something like...
GS: "Why not put a few bucks down on Borderlands 2?" Me: "I'm getting it off steam for PC, thanks though" Then they try to explain how it is better to preorder games, even if i am getting it digitally. I don't argue, because I know they are probably told to say half the stuff they spit out, and arguing with them would make me look like the idiot, not the other way around. I am usually more baffled by the ignorance of the customers, not the employees. |

I don't think they actually give pre-order bonuses at GameStop. Back in the day, and as recently as Monster Hunter Tri for a friend of mine, they always seem to run out or in the case of Tri, claim you didn't reserve the version with the extras (despite a reciept saying so).
I'm sure there are good GameStops out there, but they're only as good as the employees and they seem to attract a lot of shitty ones. I dunno, and it's always weird in there when I do dip in, I did a thread about it recently. I went to buy a Steam card and the dude just would not stop selling me on Impulse and other things, just going on and on. I kept telling him politely I wasn't interested, but he wouldn't stop and ring me up. I think that kind of behavior that's encouraged at GameStop accounts for a lot of the weirdness there. And going by a lot of these stories it seems like in the post-Internet era, GameStop is where the bizarre over opinionated, rumor-filled gaming discussions that once dominated the schoolyard now take place. It's a weird place to go. Like a nether zone between hardcore gamers and casuals who don't give a shit about anything.

They didn't say anything but back in December 2003 I went to pick up Ace Combat from the local GameStop, while I was standing in line and browsing the general manager and another employee started looking at me like I was a shoplifter. I felt kind of bad and never went back to that store again.

There were characters; every store on earth has its cast of weird customers. GameStops seem to encourage some kind of illness in their poor employees, specifically. As for the "just making money" thing, jobs at GameStop definitely work the specialty store angle. Nobody would put up with that for the money they make if they didn't give a shit about games. Why would anybody do that to themselves? |

Went to gamestop to buy sin&punishment 2 on launch day. couldn't find it, so I asked
me: "Didn't you get the new sin&punishment for wii yet?" him: "wait a sec, let me check" *1 minute of him typing on his pc later* him: yeah, we got it, but it didn't sell so we sent it back. me: I see... I left the store, and never went back. |

How rude of him to offer a salary that is standard for his store. And the average starting salary in your country is 1200, I don't see how 600 parttime is peanuts? You work half the time, you earn half the money.

Kept being asked to pre order and renew my subscription.
I finally told him I do my business with Amazon and that I was just wanting to empty out my GameStop card. Got visibily upset and goes "good luck getting your stuff on time! Bad idea!" Amazon hasn't missed a date yet.... |

Stopped in a couple weeks ago to get Batman AA GOTY for $9.99 new on 360 and had I had a NFL team shirt on. The guy was like oh hey you have Madden 13 pre-ordered? I replied no and he starts his spill about how if I don't pre-order Madden I won't be able to get it on release day. I played dumb and said OMG really????????? He said last year they sold all copies before launch and no store in the local area had it for a couple weeks. Only way to get it was Gamestop.com....... I laughed and said thanks for the tip i'll be sure to avoid them on release day and go somewhere else that might have it. :)

Not really dumb but here it goes.
Me: I want to pay $100 on my 3DS XL Pre-Order GameStop: You mean you want an DSi XL? Me: No the 3DS XL. It comes out in two weeks. Gamestop: Number please Me: *Numbers here* Gamestop: Oooh there is an 3DS XL! I'm shocked I didn't know this for the fact I'm a huge Nintendo fan! I own 2 of there systems! Nothing really happened after that. It went smooth really just a weird comment. |

This thread makes it obvious that arrogant, self-entitled, blowhards who think it's cool to hate on games store employees for trivial things, are far more prevalent than actual stupid games store employees.
Seriously, it's unbelivable to see the dumb shit some of you are bitching about that isn't even worth giving a second thought to once you've left the store. Ironically, by complaining about such trivial things, all you're doing is proving that they deserve the job more than you. Because in-depth gaming knowledge counts for very little when working at a games store. People skills are far more important. I've worked at various games stores in the past, and speaking from experience, you know what's worse than a clerk who doesn't know enough? A customer who thinks they know fucking everything. Arrogance always beats ignorance on the asshole scale.

So you're saying that as a graduate doing some cashier job parttime isn't insulting? No offense, if after graduating that's your aspiration feel free to go that way, but I assure you, that after studying for 5 years (bachelor + master degree), I'm definitely not going for some cashier job :) and part-time... it's a job you can take while you're a student that wants to make some dough, or if your wife/husband is the one doing the full-time job, than you do the part-time and tend the kids... but as your main job part-time won't cut it. You can disagree of course, but if you want to go away from home, pay your rent, and all the other stuff there's no question that a 600 eur parttime job is just not feasible.. You can do MORE work on the top of a full-time work, but living with a part-time job it's impossible, lest you consider living in your parent's house @26+, or you want to live in one of their houses :) and you work half the time, you get half the pay.. growth perspective? meh... I expect each and every grad to try and snatch a job in their expertise field and not in a shop doing the cashier, but as I said maybe it's just that I've always been too money oriented (sure my dad work in the school, but he's a private teacher for private student that want to earn their grades without following school years, dunno if there's an equivalent in uk/us.. and my mom work as a secretary in school but work as well in a notary firm as as external consultant) to miss how doing a cashier job after years of studying wouldn't mean just throwing your years away but it's instead an opportyity.. |

Speaking as an ex blockbuster UK manager, Killzone 2 was most definitely not seen as a huge exclusive within the company.

Still, it's not just your post, but there are several that basically say the employee is dumb because they didn't know x game was exclusive to y system. Of course it's not unreasonable to expect that an employee should know something about the products they're selling, especially in specialty stores. However, for a lot of these people, it's simply a job to pay bills. Heck, even the so called Futureshop "experts" (or Best Buy Geek Squad) lack any real knowledge in my experience.
At least this problem isn't exclusive to the world of gaming. I've seen some pretty asshole customers getting irate at grocery store employees for not knowing much about food. One customer was asking about spices, and the employee didn't know anything (the dude was just stocking shelves!) and the customer was getting annoyed, saying he should know this stuff if he's working there. Customers really can be assholes. |

I am sure a lot of gamestop employees are just average guys / gals who need work and it happens that is the place that hires them. Most of the things they ask aren't of their own accord, it's because they are required to by corporate. I feel bad for them honestly, it would be like dealing with the worst posters on GAF except for 8hrs+ a day and in person.

Or maybe you don't realize not everyone can live on their parents expenses after graduating until they find a job. Look at the unemployement thread in the off-topic section. The economy isn't that good. Not everybody can be lucky to find a job right away. |

Still, I just think it would be nice if a few of them were a bit more clued up on the products they're selling, that's all :)

I don't have a problem with Gamestop employees for not knowing absolutely everything about every product they sell. esp. when most of them are kids.
It's when they act like they know everything and are the ultimate gamers when it's very clear from their nonsense-spewing that they only play one or two FPSs and maybe an Action game or two. Years ago I overheard a conversation where a GS employee was actively discouraging a customer from buying "shovelware". Except the "shovelware" in question was Okami. If there had been a tea table present... (屮≖益≖)屮 彡 ┻━┻ The customer still bought it. |
