Can we please stop the "anonymity is why people are douchebags on the internet" belief. It's just wrong. I thought we got past that.
How can you continue to believe that anonymity is why people are douchebags online and that people like to hide behind their username in the face of all the people who have said dumb shit on twitter and facebook(including some of your industry peers) attached to their name, and the thousands of people you have met at conventions like PAX who have no issue walking up to you and saying "Hi, My name is X, I'm X_Stoner420_X on your site". You started really good when you said "It's not a gender thing, we're all just idiots to each other online. If it wasn't gender, they'd be insulting me some other way." but then you went off the tracks. People do care about their online reputation. Buy/Sell/Trade threads exist on several message boards people seldom get straight up ripped off. Internet friends have a place in everyone's life that is important. It's not the same as a real life friend, but you still care about them, value their input, enjoy their company etc. Garnett, You used to work for a site where everyone had their real name on their home page. Most people had pictures of themselves as avatars as well. Even the douchebags that end up getting banned for harassment go onto the Microsoft support forums begging to get their gamertag back because it's their online identity and they don't like the idea of losing it and having to start over again.

I'm pretty certain Henry Rollins did the voice of Mace Griffin and Bruce Campbell had absolutely nothing to do with the game. Because I remember having it preordered years ago, followed it pretty closely, and I don't remember anything about Campbell being in it.

People saying dumb shit on twitter and facebook has more to do with how easy it is to post something through those. It only takes couple of seconds for a lapse in judgement to happen. Also, saying something there, even if it has your real name, is still a big step removed from saying something to someone in person. I feel it just comes with the territory though if you play public games, everyone and everything gets insulted there, especially on consoles. |

Nikole was a really great guest, and brought up some very valid and interestings points. About the whole idea of using our real names as gamertags, it's easy for the press to advocate this since their GT is already linked to their names but many people don't want future employers/friends/family to know how big of a gamer he/she is. I know I sure as fuck wouldn't want them to.

I'm midway through the assholes-on-Xbox-Live talk so maybe they get to this later but MS's policy enforcement team absolutely does respond by banning (temporarily and permenantly) players who get flagged by other people for breaking the terms of service. It's easiest when people send messages because these stay on the servers, but the enforcement team will also go out and listen in on people who have had a lot of complaints, as well.
Also you have to be very careful with any kind of self-policing. It would be very easy for a group of assholes to fuck with decent people if all they have to do is get enough of their buddies to mute or flag someone.

I was interested in Sleeping Dogs until they got to the face cutting off part. I don't mind violence but I do have my limits. I wonder what it was like in the meeting where they decided their combat wasn't mature and gritty enough
Also, I'm with Garnett on Sound Shapes. I like it but not as much as I wanted to. Kind of disappointed to be honest. At the very least I thought level sharing would be better. A simple "Users who liked this level also liked..." would have been nice. Edit: On second thought I don't want to put words in Garnett's mouth, he probably liked it more then I did

It felt like Garnett had been listening to Giant Bomb lately, and tried to pull off what they've been doing which is a lot of non-gaming talk, but just couldn't.

I agree. Only GB can pull that off because of who they are. I listen to WC to actually hear about games and GB to hear about Jeff's roommate and Vinnie's addiction to Craigslist.

I think you need to expand your podcast listening a bit more if you think people casually talking about off topic things is a GB trademark.

I enjoyed NikcoleZ as well. Shame that when she was talking about Dawnguard they let two 10 year olds into the studio who proceeded to giggle like idiots and constantly interrupt while she was discussing it.
Typical of the show though whenever they have a female guest these days :/ Couldn't have a more different view than the post above this one. |

Halfway through the show and I wouldn't mind having Nikole be a regular guest from now on. The crew didn't booze in this episode, did they? I have noticed that the whiskey episodes are the worst because of all the sexual and non-clever jokes that start flying around.
Great episode thus far, keep it up! |

Nikole is great. <3
The first 30 minutes not was that bad. They talked about games too. I like that Garnett get a issue with Kotaku. In a lot of times Kotaku and Destructoid put something that was said for a game developer out of context to make a more strong headline. That make people talk everytime less or only by generic PR text. |

Ah yes the old canard of 'let's use our real names online, then everyone will be nice to each other!' Here are a few issues with that.
1. There are bullies and assholes in real life too. Having a real name attached won't stop these people from being bullies and assholes online. 2. Forcing minors to play online using their real names makes them easier targets for child predators. There would be a serious liability issue for MS/Sony/etc. 3. Forcing girls and women to identify themselves as such may make some very uncomfortable (with good reason). 4. A large group of people (the assholes, the potential victims, and people in between) will probably just end up making fake names and Facebook accounts. I know I would. This would making the entire exercise pointless. |

Anyway I don't see why ignoring people isn't a viable strategy. I've heard/read more people bitching about youtube comments in the last few years then I've read actual youtube comments. I play online some and in 90% of games most people don't talk. I even let my daughter play online because unless your playing COD no one is being an ass. Over a hundred hours into dungeon defenders and I've heard like one guy with a mic and what little text chat there is almost always positive or neutral. Its also a self fulfilling prophecy in many ways. Ever notice how sites like Gamers With Jobs or Shacknews who encourage and praise there communities then to have good ones while other sites who constantly shit on their audience then to have poor ones? The conclusion seems rather obvious, you treat something like shit don't be surprised it turns into shit Its sucks if your a girl who really really wants to play and become active in the Call of Duty community (for some reason) but just find something else to play. I don't know, maybe that sounds harsh Edit: Not trying to imply COD is the only game where sexism or assholishness is present, just using it as an example. I'm sure its wide spread in any game with lots of communication (especially voice), I'm just not sure those games are the majority. If you get treated poorly someplace move on to someplace else (single- or multi-player) I don't want to put the responsibility on the victim but in the end just look after yourself. Games and communities are disposable just find a different one, don't subject yourself to harassment

Totally was Henry Rollins, and if the planets ever aligned to have him on that would be beyond awesome.
Thanks HP for not wanting to put words in my mouth but I think we're about eye-to-eye on this one (how scary is that?) Not going to lie, to this day it baffles me that Jeff reacted 180 degrees opposite to Just Cause 2 than I expected. Lead a horse to water, etc. I guess. |

Garnett's follow up tweet: Handhelds? What are handhelds?
Why would it be scary :( |

Agree with everyone here, Nikole was great. I've been listening since the original 1up Yours cast, but my enjoyment has been waning as of late. Really enjoyed this episode. |

Well, next time you see or talk to Andrea, tell her I bought Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning after hearing her talk about it on the show. I've actually always had a passing interest in it, and I liked the demo, but never pulled the trigger and bought it. It just sounded like the perfect game to pop in and play over the weekend.
