Honestly, you really can't group an entire people as saying "so and so hate so and so." It is really unfair to the MANY Japanese and Korean people who have no animosity towards each other and are actually interested in intercultural exchange.

I'm pretty sure it's similar to any race that's discriminated against. I'm sure lot's of bigots love watching sports teams and cheer on people on the team of the race they discriminate against. They might even buy their merchandise and copy their styles. I bet they wouldn't associate with people from their race on a personal level or invite them into their social circles though.

Not saying this is all or even a majority though.

Most people don't give a fuck from what i've seen.

This senkaku situation has pissed more people off from what i've seen and heard.

those koreans are bad

but the worst are the germans imho

they talk about how they will atone for the sins of the third reich officially

at the same time the government secretly worked with neonazi terrorists that killed 12 turks and arabs in over 10 years. the government systematically tried to cover this all up until two of the terrorists commited suicide and the third one set their flat on fire to hide evidences (of course the government tried to hide the evidences as well and shredded all the files a few weeks after this all became public)

The weirdest thing I've ever heard from a Korean regarding Japan is the "soft food theory."

Theory is Jaopanese people have janky teeth because their diets were all soft food. No real crunchy rool vegetable, or chewy proteins to be had on the regular.

So generations of this caused weak gums.

Weird.

I'm a white guy from Canada. I went to Japan for a while and worked about 20 years ago. It was the first (and only) time I experience blatant racism. We were turned away at restaurants and at some bars the wait staff would refuse to acknowledge us or take our order. One time the subway was completely packed and I was standing next to an old woman. The woman vacated her seat so that I wouldn't be standing over her. I was like 'fuck her' and took the seat and the two old people now beside me got up as well. I rode that whole fucking ride with an empty seat to either side of me.

Some girls who hung out with us were given a hard time by Japanese guys until we chased them off. They had dirty names for girls who would associate themselves with us. The only place you could get some respect was in Rippongi.

Do it! Both places are great and there is far more good then bad.

The places I was turned away come first to mind but it's not like I missed a meal. Lots of places and people were cool with us. There is so many awesome things to see and do in that part of the world. You shouldn't miss it.

I guess it came out a little to rude. I was just a little struck by those child drawings. They gave me the impression that it's an issue that is very deeply rooted in their culture.

Not sure if there was a thread about this on GAF, but a few months ago I heard from my brother (a white American living in Korea as an English teacher, who's married to a Korean woman) that a Korean tv network had broadcast this crazy program about interracial relationships. It seemed to me like something out of a Korean equivalent to Fox News, but apparently MBC is a mostly respectable network. He was pretty surprised by the whole thing because he's lived in Seoul for years and hadn't encountered much racism directed at him.

If what Garou says about the sign is correct ("Japanese can enter if they acknowledge that Dokdo/Takeshima/Liancourt belongs to Korea"), then it is probably mostly about nationalism.

I've noticed many asian countries don't give a shit about appearing to be super racist(maybe not racist since they're "racist" against other asian nationalities, but you know what I mean), where as in other places like the US it's really taboo.

It feels more like "my first hate speech" type of material rather than silly banter. It would be nice if the adults put this into the kids heads also made sure the kids had a healthy appreciation for satirical humor but I doubt that that's happening.

While "Japanese Only" is quite ludicrous, too, I think specifying a single nationality/ethnicity is a lot worse.

Anyway, this stuff happens in Asia apparently. I guess there is some kind of anti-Korean prejudice in Taiwan, too. You can find lots of images like the one below if you do a quick search:

In Hokkaido in particular, you can apparently find them at bath houses/"onsen." The logic given by some of the owners is that they had too many problems with Russians mis-using the facilities (entering the baths before cleaning themselves, fighting, using soap and shampoo in the baths, etc.)

An American turned Japanese citizen named David Aldwinckle sued one of the bath houses in question.

On Honshu, such signs are particularly rare. You can find a shop or two in Akihabara that has "no foreigners" signs. They sell stuff like model guns, surveillance equipment, etc. and seem to be run by hardcore right-wing nationalists. I actually chatted with one of the employees once about the sign. He was nice enough and said they didn't enforce the policy, but wouldn't tell me why the owners kept it up. I assumed it was to appeal to right-wing nationalist customers or something.

I remember this, he has two daughters (same parents) - one of which was allowed in because she looked 'Japanese' and the other wasn't because she looked more like her dad. Considering they knew they were sisters I think he had every right to put his foot down over such stupidity.

And yes, Korean establishments will kick you out for speaking Japanese.

unless you're in some bumfuck part of Korea, I doubt u will encounter blatant racism.. I was in and around Seoul, 2 years ago. had difficulty communicating with the locals but they tried their best to work w my broken Korean. I've seen people actively accommodate the Chinese and Japanese tourists as well. of course you might run into some jaded old (drunken) Korean man, but it's not like the streets are overrun by zealous ultra-nationalists

Guys, basically every East Asian country has beef with every other East Asian country. 99% of it is extremely petty nationalistic bullshit. Saw a lot of it in China, though never actual signs barring a race/nationality from entry.

Seems to be winding down too. Assuming the popularity was there in the first place, I think they've over saturated the market.
