What's the deal with these newer episodes where Homer and Marge remember all the problems they've had with their love life?

There are so many of them and destroys any idea of them having a good marriage.

Homer's always been a jerk but he's a good husband/father when needed. These episodes make it seem like Homer and Marge fucking hate eachother.

I'm watching the Simpsons DVD right now & the 1st seasons animation wasn't all that bad. In fact there were some pretty damn good scenes.

Having a great time

I noticed on the commentaries that Matt Groening keeps on repeating the same things over & over.
How he hated the animation that was off. How he hated Maggie sucking sound when people talked. That one joke about visiting the nuclear reactor, which he repeats 6 times in 6 different episodes & how his crowning achievement was getting rid of the lines around the mouths when characters smile & made facial expressions.

Sam Simon doesn't give any commentary on any of the episodes does he?

Nope. Neither do Harry Shearer and John Swartzwelder. (Although in "The Cartridge Family" they make a phone call to Swartzwelder and he briefly speaks there. I haven't listened to this myself, though.)

Groening sounds like he has no idea what made the show good in the first place. Reminds me of George Lucas.

It was a fake phone call. That wasn't Swartzwelder. Too bad because he had a lot of good episodes where his commentary would be welcome.

I stopped listening to the commentaries around halfway through the second season because this. I didn't need to listen to 9 seasons worth.

From what I can tell he's not too heavily involved with the show anyway, much like Futurama.

Some of his original ideas for the show definitely bordered more on the absurd, like Marge having bunny ears hidden under her hair or Homer's secret identity being Krusty the Clown.

I just realized a brick joke in the Itchy and Scratchy Land.

Halfway in the episode when an announcement was made that Marge's son was taken in for misconduct, they followed with "Marge's older, balder, fatter son". Remember that, right? It is a fine, typical joke on confusing Homer as an adult child. But then I just realized that earlier in the episode upon entry, Homer paid for "1 adult, 4 children", somehow complementing that intercom joke.

Going back a few pages whilst i don't think the movie is a return to form, its a lot closer to the classics than the terrible seasons. Homer is more grounded and every character seems more like who they used to be.

Home was always this guy who was a bit dumb but well meaning but in series 14-17 especially he became mentally ill. If he had the choice of watching tv at home or jumping into the turbines of a plane whilst shouting and wearing a skirt he'd choose the latter for no reason.

The movie didn't have any of that, he became this guy that did dumb things he thought was right or okay rather than trying to be like Peter Griffin. In fact series 20 onwards has got a lot better, its no where near the classic episodes but its a LOT better

There was a lot (A LOT) really bad about the movie, but I thought the video scene was really well done and actually felt like something the series had been leading to and gave the movie itself a fair amount of import.

Bought season 7 and 8 a couple of weeks ago and I'm surprised how many episodes of the series I've actually missed from those season. Thinking of buying earlier seasons as well, but how about season 9 & 10? I've heard it's the 10th season when everything started to go really bad. I haven't been able to watch the newer episodes due to awfulness.

The "fatter, balder son" works on its own without the need of the ticket booth part, but yeah it really works more if combined with it.

I think S9 is as good or even better than S8. S8 has lots of great episodes but also several boring ones. I feel episodes like "Lisa's Date With Density", "The Homer They Fall", "Twisted World of Marge Simpson" and "The Canine Mutiny" have little humor in them and drag on too much, while S9 is more consistently funny.

S10 is when things really take a turn for the worst. "Homer Simpson in: Kidney Trouble" is the first time you truly go "When did Homer turn into such a jerkass?"

I just looked through season 10, it really is awful compared to 9. The one episode that I like a lot in season 10 is "Mom and Pop Art". It has some good jokes (building the grill, Milhouse wearing high-waters), and the ending is sort of touching like older episodes were.

Season 11 is probably the last one where I have seen every single episode of it, and the only good episode I can think of is the Tomacco Farm episode.

I don't collect for resale value so I take everything out of it's original packaging. The Playmates WOS stuff is too fun to leave in the box.

Besides, almost none of it has retained any value over the years anyway. Especially considering I'm Canadian and bought most of it at an almost 60% exchange rate:(

I'm the one remaining diehard fan on NeoGAF who still watches every new episode as it airs. I can tell you the 5-10% of modern era episodes that are worth seeking out amidst the 90-95% that are recycled garbage that should be avoided.

Lisa Goes Gaga is one that should be AVOIDED.

You are "technically" correct.

I personally view the classic era cutoff as when Mike Scully took over as showrunner for the 5F## production run in Season 9 ending the showrunning regimes of Bill Oakley & Josh Weinstein, Al Jean & Mike Reiss as a tandem (obviously Jean has stuck around and has run the show into an abomination in recent years without Reiss) and David Mirkin. It's fair to say that Mike Scully episodes were the end of the classics and the show has spiraled into irrelevance since then.

The catch with Season 9 is that while Scully took over a lot of episodes produced by the previous showrunner teams snuck into the Season 9 rotation which is why we still got to enjoy The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson, Lisa's Sax, The Joy of Sect and Lisa the Simpson which I all consider classic era worthy. These were all produced prior to the Mike Scully episodes that ran during Season 9 so they still qualify for me.
