Good question. The article mentions it was close to a tent so I would assume it was some sort of freak accident.

Here's some Comic-Con interviews that I missed from the Daily Dead with TWD cast and producers.

Highlights:

Quote:
What can you tell us about the start of the new season?

Andrew Lincoln: We can’t really give too much away. It’s a very important first five minutes and I think it’s a very clever thing they’ve done, but that’s all we can say about it.
Quote:
I had a chance to check out the Season 3 trailer before running over here and it’s fantastic. I can’t believe how much of the series you were able to cover only 6 episodes in.

Gale Anne Hurd: …and that footage was only from the first three episodes.
Quote:
Greg Nicotero and Andrew Lincoln were teasing the Season 3 premiere episode. What can you tell us about it?

Glen Mazzara: One, we hit the ground running, and two, it’s going to be surprising. People are going to have to catch up and figure out what it actually all means. Hopefully, that’s mysterious and enough of a tease, but the audience will realize that we are back in a big way.
Overall, some fantastic interviews if you don't mind spoilerish teasers. (besides that Mazzara interview)

“Where we ended up last year, that kind of frenetic adrenalized pace, that’s where we’re picking up. And I really feel — we’re just finishing editing the fifth episode, we’ve delivered the script for eight — it’s a thrill ride. People are really going to say, ‘It’s too intense, they’re burning through story too fast, they’re going too fast, they need to slow down, duh duh.’ I guarantee fans are going to be excited,” he said. “There’s no way you can tell what’s coming next. It’s really great when the actors get a script and they say, ‘Oh my god, we’re really doing this?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, we’re doing it.’ So it’s exciting and I think that where we ended up last year is our starting point, and then we pick up the pace.”
Quote:
Producer David Alpert assures fans that they needn't worry about the villain being toned down for television. "The Governor...if you're familiar with the books, we're totally going to go there this season. We're going to do some stuff that's going to shock some people who don't know the comics."

What’s the budget for season 3.

Robert Kirkman: “I think you might see a few more dollars on the screen in the third season. It’s gonna be bigger.”
Quote:
Q: You're now directing your second The Walking Dead episode after last season's "Judge, Jury, Executioner." What can you tell us about it?

Greg Nicotero: I tend to get these really good dramatic bits in my episodes... I got the script and I read it and it's huge. Every single character in the show has something to do, something to say and there are great dramatic moments. I also had several key moments from the graphic novel that fans will recognize that I had to establish and set up in Episode 5 that will play out through the rest of the season. And then there's a lot more zombie action in my episode. Actually there's a lot more zombie action in every episode this season.
Quote:
On the fan reaction…

Lincoln

The reaction from the fans, it kind of takes your breath away. It makes it all add up. You realize that without them we wouldn’t exist as a show. But also their devotion to the comic and the TV show is magnificent. It’s like the energy you feel when they see a trailer or something like that, and it just comes onto the stage, it’s magnificent. You want to bottle it and send it to the crew as well. It couldn’t be more the opposite of filming and the intensity of filming and the extremities of filming, the commitment and all those kinds of things. Then you come here and you just feel the opposite, you get the end result.

Nicotero

We’re in the middle of filming and we fly here and we have six thousand people saying, “Great job. We love it.” We literally step off the set, get on a plane and fly here, and we get the fans’ reactions to the show, which literally makes us want to go back and make the show even better. We shoot in the summer, but literally leaving our bubble in Georgia and flying here and having the opportunity to see the show through the fans’ eyes and perspective really invigorates us to make the show even better.
Quote:
From the creator of one of TV’s most savage shows, The Walking Dead‘s Robert Kirkman says violence in movies and TV should not be castigated for real-life acts of brutality.

“I think there are definitely other things that could be demonized,” Kirkman told Celebuzz this week at the 38th annual Saturn Awards in Burbank, which celebrates sci-fi and horror films. “Honestly, I don’t buy into that stuff.”

Why does Kirkman believe blaming violence on TV and movies is a disservice?

Kirkman continued, “Fiction has always been somewhat violent. You go back to early works that are pretty violent — and it doesn’t affect people the way people claim it does. I don’t really buy into that thinking. Fiction is fiction. Crazy people are crazy people. To try and kind of struggle to come up with reasons for things that are unreasonable, and you can’t find reasons for it, it’s kind of just doing a disservice to pop culture and entertainment, as a whole.”

That would've been a completely wasted opportunity though. I just could never see it happen. After all the buildup with Rick, the show had to have him put Shane down, if not for the epic clash between the show's two alpha males then at least for propelling Rick's character development forward.

No way you could've had a character like Shane just disappear from the main cast without going out with a bang.

Edit: Oh, wow. This is amazing. You guys gotta see this! haha

Exactly. It was essential to Rick's character, especially with the way he was acting throughout a lot of season 2. There's only so many times Rick can put people's lives in danger because he's too afraid to risk his own humanity.

August 2 -- The Walking Dead Season 3 -- Sneak Peek Photos from the Set! [(Potentially) MAJOR Season 3 Spoilers]

Please spoiler tag any discussion.

Looks like they may be going a different direction than the comics if Rick is going straight commando with an assault rifle. :P

If that scene is in front of Woodbury then it looks like the tables have turned in terms of who launches an attack on who.

I'd imagine either one of the group gets kidnapped by the governor's men, or somehow they realise Andrea is in Woodbury. That would then lead to them launching an attack on Woodbury to get them back.

Hmmm, so I have DISH, is there any other alternatives to seeing this? Like, does AMC put the episodes on their website, or can I purchase them anywhere the night after or whatever?

I just finished season 2 a few minutes ago, the Rick/Shane scene with the moon in the background was just an awesome piece of TV. I'd love a wallpaper of the zoomed out look in that scene...

About the above pic, I'm gonna find it hilarious if they shoehorn T-Dog into Tyreese's role, if he actually does hook up with Carol. The only thing they have in common is their skin colour.

Very minor spoilers, with a couple exciting excerpts:
Quote:
Michael: “I understand you’re in the midst of the 8th episode at this point? What can you tell me about this expanded season?”

Glen: “We are. Yes. We’re starting up episode 8, half way there. As far as this season being longer, I can tell you this: The episode we’re working on now is the mid-season finale. It’s going to be … it’s going to leave everyone on the edge of their seat, I expect. Then we’ll pick it back up with 9 later on the same way we broke it up last season. But this one is going to be … different. In a particular way. So we’ll have two ‘mini seasons’ both at 8 episodes with a huge mid-season finale, then *bam* right back in it with episode 9.”
Quote:
Michael: “Arguably, the prison story arc is one of the most popular and controversial of the comic series. There’s a lot of heavy duty stuff going on, some extremely graphic stuff. Can we expect the same from the show when it hits the airwaves again? I mean … ‘we’ meaning everyone except for those people who have the DISH network …”

Robert, smiling: “Oh … yeah. We’re not holding anything back. Things are going to have a familiar ring to them, but there’s going to be stuff in there that people aren’t expecting, too. But as far as the show goes in relation to the comic, the writers haven’t done anything to compromise the integrity of the story. It will be good …”

And here's a couple new zombie pics from Season 3.

If those pictures aren't touched up in post-production, then I gotta say that the prosthetics do indeed look a little better this season.

Edit: And actually, here's probably the most exciting piece of news for the day.

Quote:
The AMC series The Walking Dead, which has spent much of the last few month filming in Senoia, GA, will film scenes tonight, 8/9, and tomorrow night, 8/10, on East Broad Street in Newnan, GA.

“All of the filming will consist of night work,” according to a City of Newnan press release. “There will be periods of sporadic, simulated gunfire, which will occur Friday night during filming.”

Back in Senoia, officials recently approved an expansion of future street closure permits in the downtown area show. The film expansion areas now also include “Travis Street from Barnes Street to Clark Street, Clark Street from Travis Street to Johnson Street, Seavy Street from Clark Street to Barnes Street, Barnes Street from Travis Street to Middle Street, Johnson Street from Clark Street to Pylant Street, Baggarly Way from Seavy Street to Couch Street, Main Street from Johnson Street to Ray Street, Pylant Street from Anderson Parkway to Couch Street and Ginn Street from Broad Street to Pylant Street.”
I don't remember any nighttime battles during the prison arc. Sounds awesome! :D

Quote:
The Series: 4½/5

Whereas HBO arguably continues to maintain a slight lead in original programming for premium cable channels with their series Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, and True Blood leading the way, there really can be no doubt that AMC is making a strong push to claim the thrown for tops in original programming for commercial cable networks. The list of high quality series hailing from the network just continues to grow and astound – The Killing, Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Hell on Wheels all grace the network’s lineup. Another critically and commercially successful series from AMC is The Walking Dead, based on the series of graphic novels.

The Walking Dead is like the best of a George A. Romero film come to television every week. In its first season, The Walking Dead established itself as a riveting horror series that needed to be watched. In this second season, it upped the ante. While fans of the novels will likely not be too surprised by some of the events in the second season, the rest of audience surely will, and kudos to the series’ creators for thus far so successfully transitioning a graphic novel series to television.

In season 2, our group of survivors are still making their way through Georgia, the CDC in Atlanta being a bust. The group run into a major problem when, on a highway amongst a group of abandoned cars, they find themselves suddenly surrounded by a herd of walkers and Sophia (Madison Lintz) must run into the woods to escape walkers on her trail. Sheriff Rick (Andrew Lincoln) runs after to try to save her, but loses her when he must leave her behind to try to draw off the two walkers. This leaves the group searching for Sophia for days and leads to another potentially tragic event – Carl (Chandler Riggs) is critically shot by a man hunting a deer in the woods. Rick must save him, so they run to a nearby farm where a doctor, Hershel (Scott Wilson), and his family have been living in seclusion away from the town and walkers. The rest of the group eventually meet up with them at this farm, and there they will stay for the remainder of season 2. It seems idyllic at first, but Hershel himself is hiding something from the group of survivors that threatens the stability and safety of everyone. Meanwhile, tensions between Shane (Jon Bernthal) and Rick seem to be boiling over with Rick’s wife Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) still stuck in the middle of it all. Andrea (Laurie Holden) continues to become emboldened, growing stronger and taking on more of the security tasks while Glenn (Steven Yeun) finds himself a love interest in Hershel’s daughter Maggie (Lauren Cohan).

The second season of The Walking Dead exceeds the first in every way with its shocking (if you’re unfamiliar with the graphic novels, at least) twists, jaw dropping revelations, and continued explorations of what becomes of humanity in the darkest of situations. It also finishes with one mighty whopper of a cliffhanger and an intense shift in character development.

Video Quality: 4½/5

The Walking Dead looks gritty and grainy, and that’s how it is meant to look. There’s nothing that any transfer to high definition can do about this given that the series is filmed on Kodak Vision3 500T 7219 Super 16mm. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I personally think it helps give the series part of its post-apocalyptic feel. This 1080p AVC/MPEG-4 transfer from Anchor Bay couldn’t be any better. It looks natural with good color reproduction and the best contrast you can squeeze out from the original source. In comparison to the original 1080i broadcasts, which are heavily compressed, well, strike that – there is no comparison. This is miles ahead.

Audio Quality: 5/5

Coming with a Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (48kHz/24-bit) lossless soundtrack, The Walking Dead on Blu-ray is once again miles ahead of the broadcast versions. The extra back channels aren’t used as aggressively as some of the best 7.1 theatrical mixes I’ve heard, but they definitely add a little something extra to the overall soundstage. The dynamics are superb here, from the slightest snap of a twig in the forest to the blast of a shotgun or rumble of a motorcycle moving across the entire soundstage, this one really works well. Directionality is excellent, and the creepy sounds of the “walkers” gnawing on flesh is a sound that won’t leave you anytime soon.

Supplemental Materials: 4/5

This collection is packed with extras, from creator and actor audio commentaries to production featurettes in HD. Check out the list below for a more detailed look.

The Definitive Word

Overall: 4½/5

An excellent second season that follows up masterfully on the promise of the first. If the show’s creators keep this up, this may well become one of the greatest horror series ever. The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season – get it! Enough said.
Over an hour of special featurettes. Nice!

Just noticing this thread. Excited for this season given the story arc and that I think Glen Mazzara has it on a great track. Excited to see what he can do with control of a whole season instead of having to wrap up season 2 when he wasn't the main guy at the outset.

The article says he's a completely new character, (comic spoilers) it could be a replacement for the doctor though as 'someone who helps the group' if he's not included.

Sounds like a likely possibility.

Also, I just realized that with AMC announcing the casting for this character so late in the filming for Season 3, it could indicate that this character won't be introduced until after the mid-season finale.

^ That's pretty awful.

I'm curious about this "sneak peek" they have though. Is it just a new interview?

Oh, and here's an interview from a few days ago for those who missed it:

Looks like this is what EW's sneak peek was all about:
If you want to see the rest, pick up a copy of this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly.

'Walking Dead' actor charged with DUI

An actor on the popular Georgia-filmed TV series 'The Walking Dead' faces driving under the influence charges in Peachtree City.

Scott Wilson, 70, who plays the role of alcoholic farmer Hershel Greene on the zombie series, was pulled over by Peachtree City police at 2 a.m. on Aug. 18, according to an incident report.

The arresting officer said an anonymous tipster reported a possible impaired driver on Ga. 74 (Joel Cowan Parkway) near BSC Fields, the city baseball and soccer athletic complex.

The officer said he observed Wilson driving a black PT Cruiser northbound on Ga. 74 at about 70 miles per hour, which he wrote is "well above the posted speed limit."

Wilson's vehicle "swerved back and forth" several times in the vicinity of Dividend Drive, the officer wrote.

After being pulled over, Wilson said the vehicle was his sister's and he'd consumed scotch and wine while dining at Founders Restaurant & Bar in Senoia.

The officer reported Wilson initially said his last name was Miller, but later said Miller was his mother's maiden name.

After failing field sobriety tests, Wilson complained the roadway was too "slanted" and asked the officer if he could instead perform some "yoga moves."

A breathalyzer test at the scene returned a result of 0.143, above the legal limit of 0.08.

Tests while being booked at the Fayette jail returned results of 0.151 and 0.155, the officer wrote.

Wilson, born in Atlanta, has appeared in more than 50 films since his career began in the 1960s, including "In The Heat of the Night" (1967), "In Cold Blood" (1967), and "The Great Gatsby" (1974).

Ooops.

I know where that highway is at. There's a restaurant named J. Christopher's there, great breakfast.

-> One damn fine method actor apparantly. This was probably practice for his acting. :P
