I always bring up Dalek whenever someone wants a hip-hop recommendation. They honestly aren't for everyone as they are really noisy and not very typical, but their album Absence is the best hip-hop album ever made in my humble opinion.

It's Pitchfork. If you don't like indie artists, why even bother with this thread?
That said, if you get past the top 10 (which is still made up of some pretty great albums) there is some good stuff in that Top 200. - The Moon and Antarctica would have been my pick for the best Modest Mouse Album also. Glad to see it high up the list - I like Illinois, but feel that it is overrated. I prefer Age of Adz, Seven Swans, and a Sun Came (minus the stupid skit tracks) for different reasons. - Live albums probably didn't qualify, but Kicking Television is my favourite album by Wilco. Combines some of the best from Yankee Foxtrot Hotel and A Ghost is Born, and throws in a few of their earlier tracks. I actually prefer a lot of the KT song versions over the original. - I was never really able to get into Animal Collective beyond Merriweather, and a few random songs from their older albums, but it seems like the Pitchfork crowd loves them. |

Have you heard many of the albums on this list? Instead of writing things off because they are "lol so hipster" maybe you should keep an open mind and give them a try. There are a ton of legitimately great albums on this list. |

Well technically they are now (In Rainbows and Kings of Limbs were self-published), but my point is that any list from Pitchfork (even if it is a Pitchfork readers' list) is going to be mostly indie and former indie bands. That's their niche, and therefore what their audience is interested in.

I never said the albums were crap, in fact the first two choices are amazing (granted I'd have Kid A in the number one spot), my problem is the list and its lack of any music outside your typical hipster/indie underground genre. Great music still exist on a mainstream/pop level.

Would you complain about too much rap on a list compiled by BET viewers? |

I hear what your saying but that list is far from music genre specific. Also, there are plenty of albums on that list that were made under huge mainstream record labels, so I guess I fail to see what constitutes as an indie/underground album. |

The list isn't the best Indie albums. The list isn't the best non-mainstream huge albums. The list is the best albums of the last 15 years. It skews towards indie style rock/folk because the respondents skew heavily towards being fans of indie style rock/folk. That doesn't preclude them from also liking Kanye West, Jay Z, Radiohead or any other number of mainstream bands/artists. |

Otherwise: those are all fantastic albums that I would love to listen to in a row on most nights. |

Going through that list Im like "I had that album! I know them!"
Quite surprised to see The Postal Service in there.! I just found out about alot of it all via bmx videos and myspace.. kind of strange to think that some of it was a big deal. Edit: Actually making me kind of nostalgic.. Modest mouse, MGMT, and more than a few others used to be all I listened too. Also Kanye in top 10 is wrong, should replace it with House of Ballons (imo ofcourse ;)

In Rainbows and OK Computer are easily their two best albums for me. Closely followed by The Bends and TKOL. Kid A has its moments, I don't really rate Pablo Honey, and I haven't properly heard HTTF or Amnesiac.

Also I'd want to see what a list from the last 5 years would look like. |

I own none of those. Go me!
(I don't own much music, and what I do own is usually old classics, weird stuff or showtunes) However, my one overriding realisation from this: Fifteen years would basically put me back at the start of university. My word, I feel old. |

I have been following Pitchfork for years, and that user list is made up of albums that they gave very high reviews across the board. The people who voted on this seem to be strangely sheepish in agreeing with the reviewers. The site is very narrow minded though, focusing on a few genres and completely ignoring everything outside of those genres. It is a list that represents that site so I cannot really complain about it. It just seems that they tell their readers what is good, and their readers eat it up. And nothing outside of the praise of Pitchfork reviewers made it on that list. It is just somewhat comedic to me. |

I disagree with quite a few of those albums being where they are (and their reviews of them) but when you have tens of thousands of people voting for best albums what do you expect to get. |

I understand that. I mentioned it in my post. It is a very specific audience voting here. |

Reader voter lists, especially the top tens, always suck. It's like a universal law.
I like all the albums in the top ten, but they're all so canonical by this point that Inever really listen to them that much. Also, it does feel like a bit of a parody, and provides the anti hipster crowd with a lot of material. |

When it ignores Biggie, DMX, Dr Dre, and Wu Tang you bet your ass I can. Of course if you had seen my mention of all those names numerous times in my previous posts, along with Of Monsters and Men and Naked and the Famous you would have know I listen to more than "fucking metal"....or seen my numerous Wu Tang threads. Lol
