iMore is really on a roll. They are quickly becoming the most credible, well-sourced apple rumor blogs out there. They were first to report this on July 30. Hope they're right about the October event.

Edit: what does " doesn't seem very Apple" even mean? It's just like every event invitation they've ever done

Yes, I know Apple calls the iPad 3 "The iPad" but I think that is stupid too.
I think it's a bad idea to continue numbering the phones, as it leads to nonsense like we had last year when people were dissapointed with the announcement just because of the name.

I'd much prefer they ditch the numbering and just call it the new iPhone.

iPhone 5 still carries a bit of weight in the public consciousness though, because of all the hype before the 4S that didn't happen.

I could see get them getting one more year out of the numbering before dumping it. Could go either way really.

I feel for you guys still stuck in the CDMA wilderness. Cell plans here are already a disaster; using different band tech just seems like madness.

People were disappointed because after a 16-18 month wait, there were hardly any significant changes to the phone's look, body style, or functionality. Everyone had assumed that they were cooking up something big, and then they delivered a product that looked like it could have come out 6 months after the iPhone 4.

If the 4S had had a bigger screen, different form factor, 4G LTE support, or some other game changes nobody would have cared about the name.

You really think the NAME is what disappointed people with the 4S?

I hate that the 12 is stronger on the left side, because it is not centered below the text. and the shadow :/

usually apple invites always hype me, because i am a tech-nerd but this one is really bad. and the 5.. if the 6th iphone really is the iphone 5, then.. i dont know what then, i would not be happy about it.

Samsung makes way more than 1 new model a year though.

every time Apple does something, someone always says that.

doesn't matter if they do the same thing as before, something slightly different, something vastly different. someone will say it doesn't seem very Apple.

Well, there's no much to pick apart from that invite. :P

I expected them to drop the numbering too, but I think in the end, it makes more sense for them to keep it. Assuming the iPad 2 will be dropped and replaced with the iPad mini (or soon thereafter), the iPad and iPad mini will follow all of Apple's other product lines, where only the latest generation of a particular product line is on sale at any one time and no numbering is necessary.

For the iPhone, however, it's been necessary for them to continue selling the previous generations to aim for th lower end market. Assuming the 3GS will continue to be sold after the iPhone 5 is launched, at least in developing countries, they'll have four generations of the iPhone on sale at the same time. Removing numbering in such a situation would only confuse buyers.

But why 5 then? They finally synchd phone generation to name with the 4. This should be 6 if they want to keep it with phone generation (or iOS gen number for that matter)

If they went with industrial design gen this would be the 4 :p

I'm pretty sure if they put all the leaked parts together, they pretty much have everything to assemble a working phone by now, LOL.

Why were people upset with the 4s?? Are they too slow to comprehend the release pattern?

2012 - spec bump
2013 - redesign
2014 - spec bump
2015 - redesign

It's really fucking simple.

The pattern you're talking about hadn't really been established at the time of the 4S release. There were 3 generations of phones before the iPhone 4 redesign.

And people expected more than a spec bump because of the relatively huge time gap between phone releases.....not to mention rumors of 4G support, widened home button, body redesign, and 4+ inch screen. Even the iPhone 5 is kinda a disappointment compared to what we were supposed to get from the 4S. I'm still a little unclear on why only a marginally longer screen is a good idea.

true, but there were mountains of rumours about that teardrop design with a radical change in outward appearance. Plus, It was the first time Apple had a completely dedicated event just to one phone model and, frankly, they didn't have enough material to fill the time. They were able to show off the 3G and 3GS updates within 20 minute slots at WWDC. The 4S wasn't worthy of any more than that but the single event got people's hopes up.

bear in mind, that I'm just talking about internet and tech enthusiast reaction. Normal people didn't give a shit and that's why the 4S sold like gangbusters out in the real world, surprising the naysayers, as usual :)

Huh?

2007 - iPhone
2008 - iPhone 3G
2009 - iPhone 3GS
2010 - iPhone 4
2011 - iPhone 4S

If anything the 4S is 2 updates in one seeing how it got both a faster network AND a spec bump.

The iPhone 3G was internally a spec bump of the original iPhone, but externally it was a redesign. The iPhone 3GS was a major spec update, but externally, it masqueraded as an iPhone 3G.

The iPhone 5's internals seem to be a big redesign from what we've seen, but SonnyBoy has listed it as a spec bump? Doesn't make sense. There's no pattern here.

faster network? it didn't get 4G, and Verizon users don't have HSPA, so I wouldn't call the 4S a network upgrade.

and the spec bumps were expected, no shit an year and a half later the camera/processor will be better

Guys! The reason people were disappointed by the 4S is because it wasn't UNTIL the 4s that the pattern of redesign/spec bump, redesign/spec bump was established. People still thought there was a chance for an iPhone 5!

Hindsight is 20/20, remember that.

3G was a spec bump. 3GS was a spec bump. The phone was not significantly redesigned until the 4th generation.
