They can't though. Total disclaimer, I'm an ACLU member, donate monthly and support them 1000% They have to back rights violations like this.
When a friend or someone I know calls me out as hate speech supporter because of incidents like this, I always say: I support the right of the KKK to march and have free speech. I also support the right of everyone else to shout them down. Our culture is messy. |

When is the last time that the KKK actually lynched someone or behaved violently as an institution? This isn't a completely rhetorical question. I don't know the answer.
During most of the 20th century it would have been fair to call the KKK a terrorist organization, among other labels. Now it's probably better to think of it as a social club for racist dicks. |

How would your suggestion accomplish that goal? They should receive no special treatment, good or bad, if ACLU wants to stick up for its principles. I suspect - I hope - they are another faceless client as far as the ACLU is concerned.
