If you have a 4 or lower it might be worth upgrading.
If you have a 4S, better wait for iPhone 6.

Own an iPhone 4, and yup I am. Dad is getting me an unlocked 16GB as a grad gift for degree #2 since my provider (Fido) changed their upgrades from 24 months to 30 months now so I can't resub to get the HUP.

I'm gonna sell my 4 and give him whatever I can get for it. I feel guilty since his phone is the most ghetto HTC "Android 2.1 baby" Magic and he could probably use it a lot more.

Now hopefully I find a fucking job soon so I can afford to keep up with the cell phone bill.

I should add that I'm able to jump on a 5 with how my contract is, but I'll wait it out and save the upgrade for a future iPhone.

I just don't have those issues I guess. Just gonna wait for awhile. The 4 is solidly built. Kudos to Apple on that one in my opinion.

Yes Im going from the Iphone 4 to the 5.

Just gonna switch phones with my mom and take her evo and upgrade it. She's been dying for an iphone to eliminate carrying both a phone and ipod.

not really much of a question.

iphone 5 is nice, but not ~$500 or w/e the early upgrade cost is.

Now if you can take advantage of family plan tweaking...

Maybe.

4S, not buying. Not enough there to break contract, and I was really open to buying a new one this year. I probably won't even update to iOS 6 for a while.

Sold my fair condition 64GB 4S last week for $450, preordered a new 64GB 5 today. My mom doesn't use her upgrades as she just wants a phone that makes calls. So I get a new phone every year for basically original cost.

Multitasking really? I've never felt my phone get slow from Apple's multitasking. It's so limited that it shouldn't be a factor.

Apps staying open? Again the design of Apple's multitasking this shouldn't be much of a factor either. I'm not sure how much you're going to save from the app relaunching and restoring a state to it just still being in memory.

Apps taking advantage of the device aren't going to be in great numbers. How many take advantage of the 4S and it's a year old now?

LTE is less exciting when the speed will mean you could hit the cap pretty quick. Caps really hurt the interest here.
In the thread title.

My main focus is the apps and the 4" screen. iPhone gets all the good apps. I've had my Evo for two years this month and it's time for me to move on, but I can't go smaller and I'm tired of second hand apps. I will miss turn by turn GPS unless that is somehow in the 5.

The Evo is probably pretty crap by now huh or is it still up there? I'm also debating just keeping it for another year.

I wouldn't think much of it if I had a 4S....but after seeing the resale value of the last gen phones these past few years, it's not as crazy as it sounds anymore.

Yes (4S,) through upgrade shuffling I'll get a subsidized price. LTE will be nice over Verizon's 3G. But really, I just want a new toy.

Oh I read the thread topic as 4/4S -> 5 not 4/4S > 5. Outside of a guaranteed jailbreak, smaller physical size which can be advantage for some, Google maps, and a few other things, the 5 is generally a better phone. Some might say 720p video in the 4 is an advantage because you can't toggle the video mode in the 4S/5 which means it takes up a lot more storage on the phone.

4S here. I'm only 1 year into my contract and I have the 64gb version. To upgrade would cost me A TON.

Will wait for next year's model.

But I do really want one :)

Still, I am pretty happy with my phone and the new stuff added doesn't really impress me. if I had a 4 (not 4S) and were 2 years into a contract I would for 100% upgrade.

I installed the GM of iOS 6 on my 4S. Really sweet. Not sure what iOS features the 4S can't use... but it seems to be minimal. We get the new panorama feature, and the new maps... most other changes look very cosmetic, so everyone gets those.

also, if it is form factor change; I think I'll also be skipping the 5S. I want a bigger screen so the next iteration has to have a bigger screen. I don't see that happening though. :/

To be fair I haven't seen the final build of iOS 6, there may be some improvements like through the beta stage. But until either Google releases a map program of their own, or Apple's Maps is up to speed I may not upgrade.

I don't use too many, so I'm not sure how useful this will be to me. I honestly haven't looked too much into that feature to know all the details yet though. I know you can use it for airline and movie tickets and Starbucks gift cards, but beyond that I don't know how you get your data into there and how compatible it is across all services out there. I haven't taken the time to weigh the pros and cons of upgrading but will sometime within the next week or so. I have to also weigh in how much a jailbreak is meaningful to me at this point in time too. Each time Apple adds stuff to make it less meaningful, but it still is meaningful to some degree.

I have cards from 2 supermarket chains, Best Buy, and Starbucks crammed into a really small wallet. I'd really like to see integration with Aetna so I can ditch my health insurance cards as well. Not to mention airline tickets, sporting event tickets, movie tickets...etc. It uses geolocation to put the relevant ticket/card on the lock screen as well.

Ideally, I'll be able to clean everything out but my driver's license and credit cards(can't get rid of those until next year, hopefully).

The companies have to opt into the Passbook, they'll send you a link and that link will carry over the information they have on file for you and populate the Passbook. Pretty smart system they got going on.

4S owner with another 10 months or so on my contract, so probably not. The 5 looks great, and I definitely want it, but I have no qualms about the 4S. I'll most definitely be picking up the 5G or 5S or whatever the interim model that gets released in 2013 is.

Going from 4 to 5. Fuck a 4S. Selling my 4 soon after I buy my 5, And I'm buying it off contract. Why?:

-8GB of space is REALLY tight...
-...Especially considering I keep my 90+GB Music collection on my phone through iTunes Match
-Sprint's 3G sucks ASS. I'm in Baltimore where Sprint has me covered with LTE.
-3.5" is really small, I went to a 4 from an Evo (4.3") and now I feel like 4" will be just perfect.
-My iPhone 4 is getting sluggish and slow as fuck.
-Battery life kind of sucks on my 4. I'm expecting things to be better on the 5.
-Fantastic Resale value. When I get my next phone I bet that I can sell the 5 for $450+ at the least.
