i bought a 22" TV at a big box retailer the other day, and the guy was trying to push the $50 hdmi cables on me, even saying that my current ones won't work with it since the tv is 120hz. this store price matched an amazon price, so i thought that would have made it obvious that i wasn't going to full for that kind of bullshit. idk why, but to me it just feels so awkward when they ask you about the extended warranty and tell you that you need these scam cables in front of other customers and you decline. for some reason it makes me feel like an idiot

you can lose your job at retailers if you sell R-rated or M-rated products to people without checking ID. the companies plant mystery shoppers to make sure you do it.

I still remember buying Quake II when I was 14 at Best Buy, no hesitation or concern. That was truely the golden age of PC gaming.

I did the same thing except I was closer to 11. I've never been ID'd for a game in my life. I just missed that whole movement I guess.

I never ID'd kids at the game store I worked at either, though. The bosses never addressed it, and I personally don't think most M rated games are that bad. Never got a complaint but who knows, maybe I fucked up some poor kid's head. I really doubt Halo warped any minds, though. I never had any kid try to buy something like Manhunt, which is literally the only game that comes to mind that I would feel iffy about selling to a 10 year old or something.

Said thie before but the Gamestop thing must be US only, because the guys in Canada is just fine.

Hell I went down across the border to some mall in the US, bought Kirby, and had no problem. I even sat there for 30 minutes staring at DS games and no one bothered me.

It seems to depend on the store, and how desperate/tryhard the employees are. At the non-GameStop chain I worked at, our sales were fueled by college kids buying Madden in droves, so we never got a lot of pressure, but certain other stores in the same chain were just hell to shop at because some dude would just start breathing down your neck to sell you shit immediately.

In general, I blame the bothersome tactics on corporate or regional pressure. Its why I don't shop at the GameStop by me, but I do go to the local shop in the same area. Why should I give them money for bothering the shit out of me and making my transactions take 5 minutes longer when I can go to the local shop, get in and get out when I need to and talk about games with those guys if I'm up to it?

I remember when I worked at a video game store in high school, the extent of what we cared about the morality/legality to sell M rated games was very little.

John the 14 year old: "I want to buy God of War"
Clerk: "Ok, but this is an M rated game. We can only sell if you are 17 or older."
John: "I'm 14"
Clerk: "Ok, but this game is for 17 and up. We need to hear that you are 17 in order to buy this. How old did you say you were?"
John: "17"
Clerk: "Thanks, have a nice day."

Wow funny that this was brought up. When I was in HS, I worked at gamestop in like 2005 and they had the game protection plans and we were told to just add it without telling them. If they asked about it we had to say 'oh it comes up automatically when you ring it up' (complete bs). But we did tell then about it and not just ring it up without them knowing its on there.

I hated working there. Then again some lady gave me ten dollars (much to my refusal, but she insisted) because I held the store open for her cause she couldn't make it before close.

Never had an experience where someone questioned my choice in game - usually they would either go "oh yeah that's a great game!" or they have no clue what it is. Although I once overheard an employee telling a customer "don't buy that game for your kid, it's horrible!". The game in question? Sonic 06 - he was definitely doing that kid a favor :P

I've gotten the "your Power Up Rewards card is expired!" spiel and simply respond "no thanks, not today". My worst experience was when I preordered Ys: Oath in Felghana for PSP and got a gutted version of the game. Even though preordered copies should be sealed (my only reason for preordering rarer games from GS).

Also some girl asked me if I was interested in preordering the 50 Cent game after I preordered Nocturne. I have no idea where she'd get the impression I'd be into 50 Cent (especially considering my appearance and the game I preordered) so yeah that was a pretty stupid thing to say :P

I once had a strange experience at a GS.

I saw Metal Gear (don't remember which one) for sale preowned at 2 different prices. I asked the clerk why the prices were different and he said, "well, we bought these at a higher price before the price reduction, so we have to charge more for them". They were the same game.

Is it normal for GS to do this? I know they don't want to lose money, but when a used game lowers in price it seems strange to not lower the price of all copies of it.

Having worked at GameStop at the time, I can tell you why this happened.

The title released at $19.99, and reservations were not taking on titles valued at less than $20. The demand for it was not expected, and most stores only got the defacto three copies.

Perhaps GameStop has changed their policies, but I'm pretty sure he was full of shit. ALL copies should be the same price.

I will only buy a new game from them if they have a sealed copy.

Once there was no sealed copy, and I was about to be on my way, when they stopped me saying they had the game in-stock(I thought they meant sealed since that was what I was asking for.)

So I stand there and he opens a box my jaw was already on the ground at what I was witnessing.
He pulled the manual and stuff out put it in and the edge of the manual now had a big fold on the top right corner. I was beginning to think he is going through a lot of work for when I say No... But he had called me back to the counter, I didn't want to just slowly back away.

Then he pulled the cd out of a hard plastic sleeve. No delicacy, and his greasy hand touched the 'shiny' important side of the cd. crrcrack HE GOT THE CD IN THE CASE. a man hard at work.

CRACK-CRACK the case was closed. I needed a shower, I needed therapy. I had watched something that had been GUTTED, put back together like some Frankengame..

He told me that will be 59.99 plus tax! I was speechless.. literally before I had time to speak he had swiped its bar code, under that red laser thing that puts it on his computer, and displays the price back to me!

Finally I said sir.. Sir that is a used game! (he argued shelf space, anti-theft and things that didn't concern me)

I opened the box pulled out the cd, sure enough FINGER PRINTS, and light scratches to the cd from pushing in, and pulling from the hard plastic casing it had been stored. I sat that down on the counter. I pulled out the manual with the folded edge I saw him damage himself moments earlier, and laid it by the greasy cd. I told him to look at the quality of it all pointing out the things I have mentioned(and what maybe only someone with OCD would notice or care about.) and I told him straight, I would only buy this for the price of a used game. He told me he could not sell it as used, but the used game was 4 dollars less! While he was telling me that, I was putting my sweaty hands all over the cd, and forcing the cd back in that jewel case. then I rammed the manual back into the case(only bending it slightly less than he had done.)

Said it felt well used to me, and thanks but no thanks. then I shouted to the store of the upcoming steam sale! embarrassingly though as I turned to leave my shoelace must of really got hooked on the metal rack, and I tripped bringing the whole magazine rack down on top of me.

He asked if I was alright while sort of trying not to laugh but not doing a very good job at it! I said I am going to sue this store for millions or simply settle for them not gutting new games anymore. At this point he gave me a this guy is nuts look, and once I pulled off my shoe(it was stuck I left it behind.) I ran out of the store crying

Dumbest thing a Gamestop rep has ever said to me?

"Hey I don't want to be a douche but I have to give you this schtick about selling you whatever, because otherwise I won't reach my targets and my boss will yell at me. Nothing personal."

Seriously, these people are trying to make a living. Don't be such pretentious assholes. Of course there's going to be idiots. There are in every job. But working in a place like Gamestop when you have little other choice is high pressure and low reward.

While I was browsing the X360 section:

GS - Hey, you, how ya doin? If you had the brain of a fuckin infant you'd know PS3 rules.

What?

GS - Now, if you dont move sections Im going to beat the shit out of you. You pencil shaped worthless hobo.

Hobo?

GS - If you know whats good for you, you'd strip out of those clothes and show me the furry beast.

Whats wrong with you, I am just game shopping.

GS - Get behind that counter and stroke my credit card, pizza boy

Do you have Sonic for Sega Genesis 16 bit console in stock.

GS - Yes, tweety

Ok thanks Ill be back for it when I have the $50 cash

GS - Right, plus my cut of another $50.

As a former GameStop employee who was in way over his head, this thread is making me cringe. I needed a job in college and I've always liked video games, so when a guy I knew (who was a GS manager) made a Facebook post asking if anyone needed a job, I took him up on it. I quickly realized that, although I have been a lifelong gamer, I didn't know as much about video games as I thought I did. I spend a lot of time playing games — the problem is that I only play a select few games a year (and I play the shit out of those select few). I only had a Wii and a DS at the time, so I didn't really know anything about PS3 or 360 games, aside from the CoD games my roommate played. I didn't know jack shit about FIFA, Guitar Hero, or Rock Band, even though those were some of the most popular games at our store. If someone asked about a game I liked — Okami, 1st-4th gen Pokemon, Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil 4, TWEWY, Dragon Quest IX, Muramasa — then I'd tell them all about it. Otherwise I was basically useless. It led to many embarrassing incidents and annoyed customers. I quit after 8 torturous months.

This. Sorry, I'd rather make a customer unhappy than lose my job. Though when my manager was there, he'd tell me to go ahead and let them buy the game without ID if they had shopped at our store before and he knew they were over 17.

My story is back when GameStop took preorders for PS3, if remember correctly all the preorders were gone in one day. Anyway, I told the clerk I wanted to preorder the 20 gig PS3 and then the clerk hit me with this "you don't want the 20 gig system because it is not going to be in HD and will not be able to play some games that 60 gig PS3 would". So, instead of debating with him, I told him I don't care I want a 20 gig PS3, to which he said " I was just trying save from waste your money". So, long story short because I was the only one to order a 20 gig PS3 I got my on day 1 but the store only got four 60 gig systems, so the 16 people sat in line all night for the 60 gig, 12 went home empty handed.

PS. My PS3 was HD and played all the games. : )

I hate Gamestop. Recently, I called to ask if they had a copy of Mortal Kombat Komplete for PS3.

They did. I asked if it was new and unopened. I can't remember the exact response, but I took it as an affirmative.

I drive to the store and announce myself as the caller who just asked about MK Komplete. The employee wanders out to the racks and pulls an empty game case off the shelf.

"Waaait now," I said. "I thought you said you had copies that were unopened?"

"I said they were NEW," the dweeb practically sneered.

At which point I ate this dude's lunch right there in front of other customers, letting him know just how much I appreciated him deceiving me into driving down to his store only to try and sucker me into buying their stupid not-new-but-opened games.

He knew what I meant on the phone. He knew his response was unclear and misleading. That's exactly the kind of employee and retail chain that deserves to be shut down and put out of business.

I get why they gut games. I do. And I get why the sales people are pushy. What bothers me is the idea that the world that exists inside gamestop is the sameone that exists outside.

I'll never understand the indignation that some GS employees have at the thought that some people don't want to buy a copy of a game that's open and pay full retail for it.

My son and his mom yesterday recorded this with a hidden mic in his vest...

Local GS West Palm Beach, Fl

Hi, we are looking for a new Vita game, its my sons birthday today.

GS - Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, you both look like some sort of prehistorik mutated monkeys, you belong in the zoo.

Is that a joke?

GS No. would you like to preorder some items, buy a Gamestop club discount card, magazine subscriptions, or maybe a new game, pardon the open box with scratches and holes, but it is new. Perhaps since Im so beautiful you'd dump the kid and give me 20 in the stockroom.

Well I never..

GS How much money do you have in the bank, and what is the ratio avail credit to balance on your credit cards ? I need this as a reference to know when your completely drained and buried.

You are sick, are all Gamestop regional managers as rude as you?

GS How about a mom/son duo, Id paint you both silly with this here stock gun, I can scan your genitalia. Follow me to the home of the brave.

(wife and son storm out at this point, I dont know what to do)

Other than it being the superior version, are you aware of just how much its worth now?
To be fair, the whole "plays on the Wii with Wii controls" was a VERY common rumor at the time. Even Miyamoto said something in that space, but they couldn't figure it out really.

I've been to GameStop plenty of times. I've bought new games and they've come already wrapped for me, but I'm not going to doubt the stories that say unpack and stick them in their draw for space reasons. I would probably opt to go somewhere else if that happened. I'd let the manager know why I'm going somewhere else and I'd just leave.

Years ago my brother was picking up one of the GCN Star Fox games at a Gamestop and the cashier absolutely insisted that Star Fox 64 was the first Star Fox game. We gently tried to tell him that, no, there was an SNES Star Fox game before the 64, but he wouldn't have it. Burst out laughing as soon as we got out of the store.

I went to a Gamestop to pick up a game, and I had a talk with the assistant, which said the following things throughout the conversation:

- Final Fantasy VII sold 120 millions copies.
- Final Fantasy XIII Versus is going to be on Vita now.
- The Vita's OS is Android.
- Graphics on the Vita is better than PS3.
