Best gaming podcasts?
#1
I'm bored and in the mood to listen to a group of grown men talk to eachother about videogames. Weird, I know. I should seek professional help. But anyway.. What should I listen to? I want something GOOD. Always listen to 1UP Yours, love it. Always listen to the gafcast, it's okay. I don't want to hear a bunch of dudes just reading news. I want something funny and entertaining. What's out there? Help me GAF.

I only listened to like three of the NeoGAF podcasts, but I've listened to the 1UP Yours one a few times, and I think the GAF one is better... By a lot. I think the 1UP Show and Podcast are, like that one dude said, equivalent to GameLife, just with self-important pro editors instead of retarded kids.

The Gaming Noise @ gamedaily.com
http://www.gamedaily.com/download/in...eid=0078701482 They're not as regular as 1up or any other podcast, but it's funny stuff. The Next-Gen podcast ain't half bad too. It's still only it's 4th episode, but it has industry people talking every week which is a good way to mix it up. |

I also enjoyed the Wii60 podcast until they decided to do the nob all over it, show five was a case study on how not to do internet radio, terrible. The ones I listen to:
The Hotspot Incredibly entertaining and fun. Angry-Gamer.net Quite funny but unfortunately short. Major Nelson Consistant and well produced. Gaming-Steve Seems like he's back from the dead. The Noise Seems like this one died, shame since I've listened to them since the beginning. 1Up Yours It's ok. |

Next-gen is new but pretty good.
http://podcast.next-gen.biz/ Episode 3: Christian Svensson from Capcom (ex-Next Generation magazine guy) - RE5 simultaneous launch on both PS3 and X360, crystal clear - DMC4 - not near launch - microtransaction ftw Episode 4: Chris Charla from Foundation 9 (ex-Next Generation magazine guy) - Zork looks awesome on PS3 - Knows PS3 online details (if it's managed by Sony or individual companies) but can't talk about it - Episodic games ftw I guess at this rate, they'll have Frank O'Connor from Bungie (ex-Next Generation magazine guy) someday. |

One that just started (again) over at 1UP is Retronauts, hosted by Jeremy Perish I believe. It focuses on games rather than the industry that surrounds it. This week is about FFIII (Famicom & DS), and next week will be about the N64 and how it relates to the PS3 apparently.

1Up is definitely the king.
Gamespot is pretty good. EGM Live is good, if nerdy. Video Game Jocks is new but pretty good as well. |

1Up Yours is generally the best, but lately it's just a nonstop haterfest that's gotten kind of old.
EGM Live has been delivering with developer interviews more than anyone else lately, and is on the verge of upstaging 1Up Yours. CAGCast is just a solid workhorse of a show; never amazing, but never excruciating. Always a reliable bet. CheapyD sounds like a fat guy and Wombat sounds scrawny, yet it turns out that Wombat is a fat guy and CheapyD is the fit guy. Strange. Angry-Gamer is some not-very-funny skits and then some Austrailian people talking. Kind of a gamble, but they're only like 15 minutes long anyhow. CGWRadio is the unsung gem of the 1Up network. I'm not even that into computer gaming, but I usually get a kick out of it. |

hmm, I like EGM Live's recent guest-centric shows. First the Guitar Hero 2 stuff (which admitedly I don't care for, but is super-cool for fans), this week the Ex-Nintendo Counselor, and next week, our favorite: Mr. Clifford Bleszinski. Huzzah!
and Retronauts was pretty good too. Though I think they need to get Jen Frank on future 'casts. |

major nelson's is good for new 360 info and interviews if you don't mind the obvious MS slant.

Angry-Gamer all the way ;)
1up is starting to wear on me how Shane gets away with saying the dumbest crap that can be easily refuted but no one does on the show. Majornelson is good but ive started listening to it less over the last couple weeks. Evil Avatar has worn on me as well due to the chick on the podcast (not saying cause shes a chick just cause she seems to know nothing and brings nothing to the podcast). EGM and OPM I cant stand due to the people on it. Hotspot is good but mainly due to the people on it, however it does not go as far in terms of depth in what is in the news articles - they tend to just say the news, say 2-3 lines, and thats it. The ones I subscribe to are pretty much the same ones everyone else has been pimping: 1UP Yours (the best, by far), EGM Live (last two eps were super interesting), and Angry Gamer (loved the 1982 spoof).
Tried out the first Retronauts, too. I wasn't that interested in the topic this week, but the concept has potential IMO. Will try it out again next week, at the very least. Kobun and the copy editor guy need to let other people finish speaking before they run off on their tangents. It's kind of frustrating for listeners. :) I'll give the GAFcast a whirl today if I get a chance. |

Gamespot's Hotspot is the only one I still look forward to each week, and they do a decent job covering all of the past week's news items with enough context to enjoy. Their sarcastic schtick is a love it or hate it sort of thing, but the pacing is really well done so it's usually never boring.
1UP Yours was my favorite until Hotspot came around. Now I'm getting a bit tired of it, mainly due to the inside jokes and indulgent off-topic rambling that has been increasing over the past few months. Shane's fanboyism and the hosts prodding is getting old, as well as Luke's constant efforts to develop catchphrases. It was funny at first, but hearing "I think I threw up in my mouth a little" for the fifth time gets a little old. Still, 1Up has it's moments, and I'm still subscribed. Podcasts I subscribed to and eventually dropped are legion. Major Nelson is hard to take for more than a few minutes at a time, and his FUD rants are pretty easy to see through. Gamertag radio was a bit too "street" for my tastes, though he did get some decent interviews from time to time. CGW's podcast was just boring. Gaming news podcasts are pretty much a dime a dozen, and it'd be nice to have a few more podcasts that spent time talking about games. |

I prefer the organized nature of Hotspot and the personalities on the show are more enjoyable to listen to. They just have a better handle on how to properly produce and moderate a radio show. I can't say 1up does much for me unless they're actually interviewing someone. When it's just a free-for-all among the normal cast, it gets too forum referential and a bit too sensationalist. There's enough GAF references where if I want to listen to a GAF podcast, I'd just rather listen to the real thing.
Ironically, the crew on the RadiOPM show seem to be more level-headed than the 1up team and you can actually listen to that show and still get some general gaming talk that doesn't come across as fanboyish as 1up does. Other than that, I like angry-gamer for the humor and Hotspot for reasons similar to what Tekuno explained. |
