Vindication...sweet.

Nintendo has now discontinued production of the DS Lite Web Browser. So, whatever's out there at the retail level.....that's it.

I guess this move is understandable since the product wasn't exactly flying off shelves.

It's the only way to get online with the DS.

It actually broke the Software Top 10 in Canada in its first month, I think, but yeah: this is not a long term product. It was too expensive to be something everyone needed, and as a result was never going to catch on.

Are they still making the old DS browser? The only difference IIRC is that the Lite version has a smaller cart that doesn't stick out when used on a DS Lite (this also makes it incompatible with the old DS) whereas the old DS browser works on both old and Lite DSs.

It's a really poorly designed piece of software, unlike Opera on the Wii or mobile phones. It's far too slow.

Already gone. It was rare a few weeks after launch I found.

Also who cares? This thing was ass.

Wow, NOA had it released for... what, six minutes? After it took them something approaching a year to get it here, with zero improvements, and many months after the (English) European release? And you couldn't even get the DS Fat version in shops?

Probably a fitting end to a huge fumble, IMO.

The pic in the OP ensures that they won't finish loading the page before they run out of batteries, anyway.

It's the full internet (minus Flash and Java), so in the sense of getting to what you want to see and viewing pages in their intended format it's pretty good compared to say most cell phone browsers. It's just abysmally slow.

Too bad, but no surprise. It was like molasses. Around the NA release there was a thread about it, and it took an extremely long time to load stuff like NeoGAF. The idea is great but the hardware can only do so much, and with no flash OR java you limited in what you can do with it.

The original DS version was only available online (and I think at the Nintendo World Store).

The DS browser is a good idea, but the only place I go that has WiFi is my house and when I am at home I can just use my laptop or Wii.

I love surfing the net on my DS. If you surf "mobile" sites, the DS browser works great. I posted some links that work great on the DS browser:

It's painfully slow compared to other portable browsing devices (Pocket PCs or the PSP).

First, where did you get this news? I find it peculiar this 'software' gets mentioned while others don't.

And production ceases for games all the time - it's not unusual. Games get made in print runs, and a lot of them don't get second runs, and even those that do get subsequent print runs don't get reprinted forever.

Why would the DS browser be so special that it needed its own news?

It's clumsy but can be useful (all my webmails and forums work well, for example) as a last resort. I'm glad I got it before it was discontinued.

Nice as having a portable browser for your ds, for its price and limited ability the browser gave imo my mobile does a better job with minimal costs for browsing anywhere instead of hotspots.

A shame but hey, I honestly don't think everything with a screen needs to browse the internet.

So, out of curiousity...

a) Do we actually KNOW it's "ceased production"? Who/What is the source of this information?

b) Does this actually mean anything, given that many games are done in single production runs with future runs if the demand is there? Isn't this somewhat normal?

c) Was this another case of some random Gamestop employee saying "XXXX was cancelled/ceased production" because their computer shows them that no new copies are being delivered?

Watch?! You act like the DS browser is useful and has some sort of flash functionality. Best you're getting is a GIF.

Hmm..weird..
It sold over 70,000 units when it debuted on June; which is not bad (for what it is)..maybe they were expecting more.. (since some big game, for another console/system debuted that same month in those charts, and sold less than the Browser... :p )
