Thanks for the thread, Dusk Golem! A lot of really nice games in here, plus some lovely nostalgia...

I've really been wanting to recommend this one, especially since I got the true ending, wow!

Embric of Wulfhammer's Castle
Embric gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jF7LCglE5fA

Embric of Wulfhammer's Castle is a quirky trek through classic jrpg and D&D (!) tropes where you play the Duchess of Elstwhere, who is about to be married off to Embric, the hero who just finished saving the kingdom.

As Embric is off chasing a new adventure hook, you instead get left to meet and learn more about his party members, the Awesome Fellowship (a human rogue, an elven mage, and a dwarven warrior) and the crazy/lovable residents of Castle Wulfhammer, that Embric was just landed with.

More of a visual novel / exploration game than an rpg, the game does contain -multiple- adult situations. While it is ostensibly a yuri (girl x girl) game, it's also full of hilarity and heartbreak. At the same time, Embric also touches on issues like the socio-political system of a fantasy world where kidnapping princesses for ransom is a regular occurrence and you can have a priest resurrect you if you die!

Might as well also post it here. After all we also can recommend some. This thread actually made me go back to play some games made with the RPG Maker, and I think that I like to share some "normal" Fantasy RPG with you. Games in Demo status are also alright?

I played through the demo of Assembling The Void and it's really fun. The main concept behind this game is puzzles and there are some good mechanics combined with that. The Battle System is strongly influenced by Secret of Mana and similar games, and it really works surprisingly well. Great respect also for making almost every single tile or sprite by himself. Wonderful atmosphere included.

Go get it here, the creator of this game just released a demo version that lasts about 2 hours.

Excellent news! Wonder what the new endings are abou--

I am on board with this development. She was my favourite of the trio.

The creator's website says there's a major bug with v1.04 which'll be fixed in a v1.05 next week, but there's a temporary fix in the meantime. Download the new map0127.lmu file from the site (click the link by the ① on this page; direct linking the download gives me a 403 error) and replace the old file with it.

As far as I'm aware there isn't a way to update a pre v1.04 version of the game to v1.04, so if I want to see the NG+ stuff (which I do) I guess I'll be doing another playthrough. Hopefully with one of the new endings!

RPG Maker seems to receive little attention or support in the Indie Development thread, so I'll ask in here (if that's OK). What's the best way to learn Pixel Art?

That really has nothing to do with rpg maker specifically.

Now that Ib v1.05 is out, I did two more playthroughs, getting the 2 additional (Mary-centric) endings and going through the funky NG+ dungeon in the process.

The 'good-very bad' ending was disappointing in that I got it after the other superior new ending, it was comparatively abrupt and I was hoping for Mary and Ib to mutually want to escape together after Garry's irreversible breakdown. No major objection to what we got instead (spoiler image), just had higher expectations for it.

The 'bad-very bad' ending was all kinds of awesome. Not only does it let you control Mary, albeit briefly, but it also just flat out degenerates into Witch's House level shit at the end with the décor changes in the 'real' gallery (spoiler image) and the screwed up status screen (spoiler image; there's a second variant as well). Despite the tragic outcome, it was probably my favourite in the game.

I played this a few months ago and it was really quite good. I actually think I would have paid money for it. I haven't gone back to get all the endings but I intend to.

how hard is RPG Maker to learn? I might be using it for my graduate thesis show work instead of Unity or GameMaker (i'm use to using those since I'm more of a visual programmer) due to the engines being built for narrative stuff... I bought RPG maker on sale from Steam but havent had a moment to jump into it yet.

Am I better off using an adventure game engine tool or just jump into RPG maker?

Been playing through a lot of RPG Maker games recently in part of a way to get through them/study them. While there has been a lot of crap, also found some good ones, though debating if I should put a few up, such as Desert Nightmare. I thought it was mediocre, but I know a lot of people like it for example. Will also give a swing to the several suggestions stated here.

Depends on what you want to make, but RPG Maker is a lower-entry development tool. However, I like to think that RPG Maker has 'developer stages'. The lower-level is quite easy, which would only require some practice and simple beginner tutorials to learn, which would give you enough knowledge to make a basic RPG, using the engines defaults and alterable values to change some things up.

Beyond that gets trickier to assess. There is actually a lot of hidden depth to RPG Maker, but utilizing different parts of the tool require some more advanced study. However, for what it sounds like you want to do, I think it is definitely a possibility. If you have any questions, feel free to ask here.

I've been hamstrung by coming up with ideas that I don't have the know how or the talent to pull off with rpg maker so I'm thinking about just going back to basics and making a 'typical' rpg using tweaked versions of the default systems (or public scripts) and telling a story I want to tell.

As much as I would love to make a splash by creating something truly unique i think there comes a time when you have to be realistic about your talents. Hopefully trying something simpler will mean it will actually get done.

It takes time. I've been using Rpgmaker since RM95 on PS1 lol.

I'd say as long as you can grasp the concept of three main features, you'll be golden.

-Events
-Switches
-Variables

Everything else is just building maps and typing dialog.

To the Moon finished. It was alright. Some of the dialogue was a bit eh, but it had some feel good stuff going on and some good music. Not the best RPG Maker game I've played, but I think it deserves the praise even if I didn't find it as emotional as other people.

Does anyone who owns the steam version know if it needs steam to run? Or can you run it like a normal program.

If it's just to download it then that's cool. I was under the impression that it was tied to steam the same way most games are.

Ah, RPGMaker. I spent hundreds of hours when I was a teenager, using RPGMaker 2000. I had several game demos with considerable effort put into them but I've lost them all over time. If I had loads of spare time I would easily jump back in to making games for fun. What a great way to fulfill the creative urge.

This game looks absolutely stunning... will there ever be an English translation? I have taken several years of French back in HS so I'd probably be able to get by better than if I did an RPG in Japanese...

I always knew that the french community has a bigger focus on graphics, but stuff like Asylopole or Aedemphia are something special even there.

Most games just use characters and tilesets from several old NES/SNES-gen RPGs. I got pretty far with just that, and only doing minor, easy modifications on character sprites. If you want it to look unique, though, you really need to get some experience in pixel art.
