So I was messing around with my galaxy S3 today and noticed while watching a video recording in the default video player that the symbol for streaming to other devices had appeared, even though the only device I had available to do that at the time was my XB1.
I was on the pooper at the time so I pressed the "stream to other device" button and hey presto, I hear the sounds of a Formula 1 onboard camera recording coming from my living room.
I thought that was pretty odd considering XB1 doesn't support DLNA.
I then checked out my DLNA streaming app (BubbleUPnP, its a great app that allows you to stream media from any DLNA server in your house (including your phones media), to any digital media receiver in your house). Lo-and-behold, I see "XBOX-ONE" listed as a digital media receiver.
Since BubbleUPnP also allows you to stream music from your Google Play collection or any media stored on skydrive/google drive/dropbox, I decided to give that a go and yep, works fine.
Then I started thinking about how well a chromecast for the HDMI in would work. I don't have chromecast though.
Given all the "doesn't support DLNA" hubbub and the fact that only "play to", a Microsoft termed application for streaming was ever mentioned, I just plain assumed that the XB1 wouldn't function as a normal Digital Media Receiver and that you HAD to stream music/video from Windows apps. Imo, MS should have made much more of a point of mentioning that in more plain/common terms.
If I can just use any DLNA app to stream stuff from my media servers to the box, I don't think DLNA is a necessity. Its definitely an option, especially for those who'd rather navigate their libraries via the console itself, but it seems to me that functioning as DMR should be an easy replacement for most anybody who owns a smartphone.
Will be interesting to see what kind of DLNA implementations are eventually put in place though.

Sorry maybe I'm confused, but who ever said that the Xbox One did not support DLNA?

I played some videos recorded from my Galaxy Note 2 when the stream button appeared, and it played on my Xbox one through Video player fine.
Halo 5 is coming next year, you'll get your DMR soon enough.
As far as I know, it already supports DLNA. The UI just lacks a method to select the files from the console itself.
I always thought that the Ps4 doesn't support DLNA and Xbox does.
I don't even know anymore :'(
Been streaming my tv series through X1... it's super easy and works amazing!..
Serviio on PC and share you folders.
For android users; get BubbleUPnP or Skifta(i like this one better)
and play everything and anything you want on X1.. as long as you have Xbox Video & Xbox Music app installed, it should load the app automatically and start the stream.
Finally, it gives me a reason to use my old android tablet again :)

Its implementation is worthless for me. I would have to run to my laptop and push data to the console rather than just select content on my laptop from the console. One is a pain in the ass and not worth the effort while, the other isn't. It should work how every other non-fecal dlna device works.
Or you could do what I and others have suggested in this thread and use a DLNA app like BubbleUPnP on your phone to access your media and send it to your xbox.Originally Posted by Senor Kami

DLNA is a Sony initiative I think. Its an agreement between companies to allow their devices to talk to each others and share media over the network. Its an open technology compared to Apples proprietary DAAP.
I'm surprised the PS4 doesn't have it but I'm guessing it will arrive in a future update.

No Designated Marksman Rifle just yet, that feature is coming next year.
