Jim Sterling, Laura Kate Dale: Warning to Yooka-Laylee Pre-Orderers

IIRC, Unity is poorly threaded, which makes it highly CPU dependent. And the Xbox one and PS4 have terrible little single threaded CPU's. So not too surprising.

It also means that if the game is well designed, the PC version could still be great.

cancelled my pre order, window is closing quickly on amazon pre orders that should ship next week or so, i'm too busy right now playing KH remaster, WD2, mafia 3, BOTW, and soon Persona 5 and I'm not a huge platforming guy anyways.

Why do devs keep using fucking Unity? Isn't Unreal 4 cheap now anyway? And superior in pretty much every way imaginable at that?

No, not really. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, it's just that Unity can be difficult to optimise if you haven't planned ahead on that front - really easy to use, hard to master. There are Unity games that run well on console, such as Android Assault Cactus, which involves a ton of shit happening on the screen.

Plus, Unity was, until a fairly recent version, didn't have multi-threading support, which doesn't mesh well with the shit CPUs of the PS4 and Xbone, which have shit single-thread performance. I wouldn't be surprised if Yooka-Laylee wasn't updated to a more recent version of Unity 5 in order to avoid breaking things.

tl;dr: Calling Unity a "shit engine" due to devs not optimising properly is unfair and terribly reductive. That being said, you're going to be saddled with any number of problems with pre-existing engines that will be a pain in the ass to work around, and UE4 is no exception, hence why my programming guy and I are moving over to a custom engine based off of open-source frameworks.

The beta version thingy (given to Amazon pre-orders several months ago) ran like garbage, to the point at which it gave me a headache from the eye strain; and in said "beta", the world geometry and detail was pretty sparse.

Hoping the Pro's "Boost Mode" helps smooth thing out...

I watched part of one gameplay video, set in a casino I think. The thing that struck me was how big the environment looked compared to the character and how few baddies there were around.

Maybe all the games of the period were like that I don't remember, but it felt like the player was rolling around a warehouse to go quite small locations for gameplay. Found it a bit odd.

I'll still buy it, performance issue aside or not. I've been waiting for a Banjo's successor for so long, I'm not going to choke because of eurojank and choppiness.

Still, this might be troublesome for a LOT of people lol

Y'all keep saying "Unity" but there are Unity games that run just fine. Of course, it takes more work to get it smooth, but still. On next gen systems? Should not be an issue.

People always say this, but when the bulk of the unity content released is iffy, it's going to continue to get a bad rap.

And that is why we have embargos.

Now we have 2 people saying 1 thing and no one can support or contradict that.

Not very fair I think.

Watching the trailers so far didn't gave me the best feeling. But my concerns are mor eabout the level design than the performance. Game worlds like the casino level loked kinda uninspiring or kind a sandboxy so far. Hard to put the right words into it.

The way they talk about it (or rather, the way the noises they make to describe it sound), I get the feeling that performance isn't their only issue with it but it was the only thing they explicitly hinted at so anything else would be guesswork on our part.

Uhhh...I'm not sure I understand those performance comments. That's all I will say.

Wonder which version they are playing?

I cant talk about much since its embargoed.
But I am highly confused about those reports and they don't reflect everyone's experience.

Ever since the beginning and catching up on all available media on Yooka Laylee i always had this feeling this game is off and not that great but i only wanted to support this so other devs can see 3d platformers can be successful so they start making more too

I was planning on waiting for the Switch version, so luckily it comes out after the other platforms and I have more time to decide.

Makes it all the more impressive that Nintendo get rock solid 60fps out of extremely limited hardware for their recent 3D platformers.
Well they are running on engines made specifically for their hardware while developing games for only one platform and spec. Unity has to target many platforms, so in no way is it going to match the optimization or quality of a first party studio.

You are nuts if you are getting this game day 1 with everything that is out right now.
That's unfair. People have differing tastes. Banjo was one of my favorite games as a kid - so of course I'm going to be jumping in day 1 to see if they were successful in recreating the magic.

This game is supposed to be released on Switch and already struggles on PS4 and Xbox One?

IIRC, Unity is poorly threaded, which makes it highly CPU dependent. And the Xbox one and PS4 have terrible little single threaded CPU's. So not too surprising.

But their CPUs should be still more powerful than the ones of 360, PS3 and WiiU. Yooka-Laylee is not a very complex game.

I switched to the Switch when we could 2 months ago and really hope it'll be better optimized but I'm scared now.
That version being done in-house gave me some hopes.

Isn't this the guy who gave Zelda 7/10? I don't think we should take his opinions seriously.

But more seriously, I'm not surprised it's still choppy. Hope it's just that and not general gameplay problems.

Heaven forbid somebody giving an honest impression of a video game they've played

It's a good thing that these guys are beholden to nobody but themselves

Oh no, please don't be true :(

Has there been a 3D unity developed game with a large world that hasn't had technical difficulties?

Refresh my memory: the only version that Playtonic developed themselves that's coming out next month is the PC version, right? I seem to recall that the PS4 and Xbox One versions were farmed out, while Playtonic is going to continue to work on the Switch version.

I never pre-ordered it, but was quite interested. But that interest was significantly dashed when I saw that video of the casino level. It looked very empty, which I did not like. I was really hoping that I was wrong, though.

Not to sound selfish, but I hope they aren't talking about the PC version. At least then there'd be one version that runs well.

I'm still cautiously optimistic.

It isn't cheap if your game does well. Unity is flat cost per seat, Unreal just takes a chunk of your entire revenue.

Anyways, the trailers looked fine to me and I've played the toybox, controls and everything were great. Is this guy traditionally a real stickler for performance or something? If not I can't see how this is just "guy doesn't like thing" until we get an actual review. Kind of a shitty way to break-not-break embargo too.

"#Money back# #Money back#"

On a serious note, i backed the game for throw away money. While it being broken / shit etc would be disappointing to an extent, the premise of backing it is with that possibility in mind. Anyone who hasn't done this either with backing the game or pre-ordering probably needs to re-evaluate what they're doing.

Performance issues, being unity, is a given to an extent. Should be able to salvage something on PC but we'll see. I've always thought the rest of game itself is the challenge Vs Banjo heritage. Looking forward to seeing the final product whether good or laughing stock!
