I also got a free Gear VR with my S8+ and it was just delivered!

I cant wait to start using it. I'm very interested in watching 3d movies as another poster mentioned above. Now I just need to figure out where and what kind of files to get and how to get them on my phone.

Samsung just put up an app recently called Phonecast VR Beta which lets you project some video streaming Android apps on a virtual screen. It even includes Kodi. This should work nicely to watch streaming content without having to wait for a VR specific app to be developed for each respective service.

Looks to be limited to the S8 for now.

Annoying that they put "... And more" and the end of the list of apps they support.

I'd love it if Plex was supported, but I kinda doubt it since it's a pretty popular app and they'd probably want to advertise that if it had support.

So I've got a free Gear VR (the latest model wiht the controller) free with my S8!!

Anyone have any suggestions about what to play? Is there a thread about cool Gear VR games/experiences to have?

Lol, Just looked at the OP and there's some stuff there already :) But if you guys have any new things you tried and blew you away, please share!

I want to see if they have any dinosaur stuff. I hear the sense of scale in VR is amazing, and I think my little boy, who loves dinosaurs, would really get a kick at experiencing them in VR.

Must have apps:

Oculus Video - put 3D movie files in Oculus>Movies>3D folder and watch 3D versions of films. IMAX movies looks great.
Samsung Internet
Oculus 360 Photos
Milk
NextVR
Netflix
Hulu

Must-have Games (* means you really need a controller to enjoy or it's required):

Bandit Six Salvo - Because it's currently free
Darknet
Drift
Lands End
Eve Gunjack
Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes
Omega Agent*
Herobound Spirit Champion*
Anshar Wars 2*
Minecraft*
End Space*

Stern Pinball Arcade* - you get a free table so no downside to trying it. It's like standing in front of a real pinball table! My Note 5 has framerate problems with the non-free tables but a newer phone may run them better. Tables are $5/$10

Zen Pinball* - $5 gets you 3 tables. It's a great deal BUT I have performance issues really bad on my Note 5 so whether or not you should buy it is contigent on the game's performance on an S8.

TBH I haven't really kept up on the new releases for the last few months so there's probably some great newer stuff I'm missing.

Don't buy that Adventure Time game, it's only 2 levels and you can beat it in 20 minutes, no replay value.

The new Oculus Video integrates the app into Oculus Home. Overall this is an improved and more polished experience as a result but two very important features have been removed that I'm scrarching my head on.

You can no longer alter the size of a video in Void.

The app no longer asks you if you would like to resume a video, it will always restart if you back out.

Another thing that sort of bothers me is that there is now distracting aliasing around the video border. Shifting your head at all will shift the jaggies.

I should check out the sale to see if there's anything I'd like to check out.

I have a Steelseries bluetooth controller, but I just never get up the energy to actually play any of them. I booted up Land's End like once and looked around a bit, but didn't really PLAY it. And I've had that bomb defusal game for ages, but I've never printed out the manual or had a party where it would be fun to play with people.

The last few weeks I even thought about uninstalling the Oculus apps since they have been bugging me to update so often (or I guess I could just turn off notifications for them).

To my knowledge it's suppose to work with Minecraft well, but they were planning on patching in full support for other games eventually.

That was a while ago though, so I'm not sure if it has happened yet or if it even ever will still.

I would probably never use it if i had a better vr.

Unless you want to feel what cordless vr is like (what all vr should be) It has none of the headtracking.

Personally, I think Gear VR is worth it just for the opportunity to watch movies on the ceiling while lying on the couch. That's one of my primary uses for it nowadays.

I found the best stuff for GearVR is the videos, which you can obviously watch on any vr headset. The best thing about it is the portability, but VR isn't that much of a party thing, so yeah.

About the Xbox controller, the Bluetooth version should work perfectly with every game that supports a controller according to the GearVR subreddit.

Today is the last day of the sale so check out everything you want before it's to late. I bought a few things but was mostly impressed with Daedalus, it has a great movement system that work great even on the touchpad. A lot of flying around that feels awesome in VR!

Anyone else having an issue with Gear VR suddenly restarting their phone while using apps? This is happening to me a lot. It also randomly crashes apps running in the background.

Note 5, latest firmware, no root.

GSG Flash

Nobody ruins my family vacation but me...and maybe the boy!
Does anyone know when the next sale is? Or how often sales happen? I just got a Gear VR and I wanna try out some games but the full price for some of them is a bit too rich for my blood.

So... I was entitled to a free Gear VR after buying an S8 and it arrived yesterday. I've set it all up and tried it for the first time today. Obviously, the first thing I did was checking out some VR porn. I mean, who wouldn't, right? It was... pretty cool. I do have a few VR related questions though:

1. Is it possible to change the vertical orientation instead of only horizontal? Sometimes I have to... look way too much down almost breaking my neck.

2. I'm not familiar with the terms, but is it possible to change the orientation of the "hub"? Like, if I want to see the menu, I have to physically move 180 degrees and look behind me, same with browsers. It kinda makes it a pain in the ass (no pun intended) to browse the internet. Can't I just easily and quickly move the menu into a direction I want instead of constantly look behind me?

3. The videos are way too fucking bright. Surely you can change the brightness, but I did a quick search and couldn't find it. Any tips?

I'm really not sure what you're asking in 1. and 2., but for 3., press and hold the back button on the side of the Gear VR until the general menu appears. You can change various settings here, among them screen brightness.

As for 1. and 2., this might be due to the particular apps you're using but most of them have their gui in easy range without the need to look at outrageous angles. For ones that don't, try sliding to the left and right (really forward and backwards, since it's on the side) to rotate the menus of 360 menus.

hold back button down and a text based menu will show up. Select the cogwheel icon to the right to bring up the settings. "reorient" should be visible as an option, select that and you can set the new default forward position (so in your case you can look a little higher and set that as the default). This will also also fix your problem with the hub menu being behind you.

Brightness levels can also be changed in the settings menu too. The slider looks like a sun icon.

For most apps, reorienting from the Gear VR menu like you described will only reorient the horizontal forward direction. Vertical is determined by gravity. You can orient screens vertically, also to the floor or ceiling, inside many apps though.

What would you guys say are the best games that have released over the year?

Land's End
Esper 1&2
Daedalus
Smash Hit
Adventure Time
Cries of Harvest
Viral

Edit: If you meant this year specifically, bolded are from 2017. Viral got a sequel this year (Quarantine), Witchblood is a pretty good Metroidvania. And Coatsink (of Esper and Night Sky fame) released Augmented Empire which I have yet to try but that's one of the biggest titles this year.

It's worth mentioning that using the Void theater option in Oculus Video or the Netflix app allows you to reorient the screen vertically. This took me forever to figure out, so I figured someone else would appreciate the information.

Actually it also took me a while to figure out how to even void the theater in Netflix. I mean, I did look at the ceiling a few times and saw the text "void theater" but I had to google how to actually enable this option. You have to look right at the center of it and tap the touchpad to activate this option.

Another thing worth mentioning is that you can freely change the screen size in a voided Netflix environment and make it even bigger than before.

Does GearVR work with any S7 or S8 phone? I have an S7 Edge, which came with a free GearVR. I have to switch networks and get a new phone for work, but the only Samsung options are the S7 and S8 (regular sizes). Will these work with my GearVR or would I need a new/different model?

I can also get a Pixel or PixelXL, but I don't like the idea of losing my GearVR.

Nevermind, looks like there's an answer above. I should have read it first!

You can get Daydream for the Pixel phones as well, so you wouldn't be losing VR entirely.

I'm not sure I would want to buy a new headset. I only used the GearVR because I got it for free. It's nice to have, but I don't really want to spend $80 on a new one.

He wouldn't be able to use the apps he already bought (if any) from Oculus with the Daydream though.

You could get the S7, that will work with the Gear you already have. Since you absolutely don't want to spend money on another headset.

Any newer Gear would work with the S8 and they have better lenses, i.e. higher FOV and better use of the available resolution. Also doesn't fog up as much the older one and you can connect USB memory with the newer ones.

Is there any reason to buy the new gear vr for the Note8 instead of a cheaper S8 one with controller off ebay?

I love my Note 8 and want VR but $129 compared to the ~$50 on eBay seems awful

You could also wait for the Oculus Go which doesn't require a phone, comes out later this year for $200. it plays the same games as gear vr and has the same inputs, but has better lenses and its all built into the headset.

It was announced yesterday at the oculus connect keynote/event (its the last day of the event today so there may be more announcements).

Announcement vid for oculus go:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bQUBzPZHHQ

its a standalone gear vr headset that uses Oculus' next gen VR optics which are better than current gear vr and rift lenses. I said its coming out this year, but i got it wrong, its actually early 2018 (i even wrote the actual date in the conference thread lol, not sure why i said this year in the post above).

If you want to know more about the conference details, i've kept the OP in this thread up to date with announcements: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1445930

Thanks for the pointer! Looks interesting. I don't use my Gear VR a ton but would love something that doesn't overheat my phone so quickly and has better graphics (the screen door on the Gear is annoying).

I played the well for 2 hours.

Very disappointing.

Fantastic graphics, decent use of 3D, but that's it. It is a mediocre dungeon crawler with absolutely nothing interesting about it.

Horrible loot, boring combat... just totally uninspired.

It's a shame that so much art effort went into such a terrible game.

Also, there is nothing in the game that takes advantage of it being immersive VR. The game can almost literally be dropped onto a phone/tablet/PC and it would be fully playable.

That's a bummer. Thanks for taking one for Gear-GAF.
