Why do mushrooms make you bigger in Mario Bros. but faster in Mario Kart?

Momentum = Mass X speed

In the platformers, when you pick up the mushroom, your movement speed is unchanged. In our universe, this is impossible, because of the law of conservation of momentum. If your mass suddenly increases, your velocity should go down by the same degree to conserve your momentum.

So clearly, the effect of the mushroom in the Mario-verse is to instantaneously increase your momentum by some factor. In the platformers, Mario uses this power to increase mass while conserving speed. In the kart games, where speed is more important, he maintains mass but increases speed instead.

... I didn't expect to get such coherent answers

detective gaf always on the job. the science used in video games would be pretty cool idea

Why does the Fire Flower in Smash Bros. work like a flamethrower instead of shooting projectiles?

Because they are just holding the flower instead of directly absorbing its power to change color into Fire Mario/Rosalina/whoever. Probably a rule issue, or a side effect of being made out of plastic (they are trophies after all).

There are over 10k different types of mushrooms irl with different tastes, properties etc. Why would that be any different from an imagined world where you could make up whatever you want?

What about Mario Kart Wii's Mega Mushroom? Who's consuming that for it to increase the size of both kart and driver? It's not like the kart and driver aren't seperate entities seeing as Wii also introduced tricks that clearly showed characters seperating from their kart entirely.

The question is, what is Mario's normal size?

Presumably he came to the Mushroom Kingdom small and the Mushrooms made him bigger.
Has he used so many Shrooms that he got stuck big size?

If so, does that mean that Princess Peach was born a giant?

its like olive garden there is always more breadsticks. huge mushroom throw some in the tank eat some, smear it on the kart.

Imagine mushrooms making you bigger, heavier, and faster. Sounds borderline op. Of course they don't have to do that, but still for accuracy sake.

Obviously, Mushrooms react differently when you decide to toss it into your fuel tank. Basically, it works just like Nitrous Oxide to give you a boost of speed.

How does Boo accelerate & brake without feet? Why are babies allowed in this dangerous sport? Is there a labor union in Mushroom Kingdom for the construction workers who built those tracks?

Why would you even think that you were eating the mushrooms in Mario Kart? Do you think that race car drivers go faster if they take steroids? You got to be logical.

Yeah, logic is clearly the obvious go-to when dealing with a land of magical flowers and mushrooms and talking turtles.

1. Ghost tricks
2. In universe, everyone hates the babies and no one cares if they get hurt
3. They think they have a good union but they don't. They're basically slaves.

in mario kart large characters (such as bowser/DK) are faster, as are larger engines (100cc vs 200cc)

Mushrooms therefore work by increasing the size of the engine

Like many others said, I always thought they just shoved the mushroom into the engine... Cased closed

Though I could've sworn that there was a Mario Kart (I think Wii?) where a mushroom will make you big and crush other players. Though that was most likely the Supershroom.

Knew it, Mushroom Kingdom is a hell-hole. Nintendo unsuccessfully tried to paint this shit-stain with cuteness and sugar, but I'm too clever for Nintendo's propaganda.

You guys, keep on playing your precious Mario games if it makes you feel better. For the more open-minded people: this guy wears red working-class clothes and has a moustache like Stalin. 1+1=?

Has anyone ever questioned whether Peach really is Mario's girl? What if Bowser is actually rescuing her from Mario's communist fangs?#fakenews

They don't eat it in Mario Kart. They throw it towards the exhaust and the chemical combustion propels them forwards.

Why do more coins make you faster? The extra weight should slow you down.

Once they grab the first one the greed instict kicks in and they accelerate to snatch some more. By the time they reach the tenth, they've realized how unfulfilling endless riches on their own truly are, so they settle into routine.

The bigger question is why red shells can target people in MK but work the same as green shells in the main series.
Because red-shelled Koopas are smart enough to not walk off of cliffs, while green-shelled Koopas are dumb lemmings who only know how to walk in a straight line.

If the MK shells still have Koopas hiding inside them, the relative intelligence may still apply.

The way I see it, they shove the mushroom into the gas tank rather than eat it. Consuming it is what leads to an increase in size. The engine isn't organic, so it ends up processing it differently.

They make the engine bigger...

Temporarily....

The car picks it up, not the driver. So they are both the same really.
