It took them a gen or two to perfect Touch ID.

Wish they would have made this a easier transition because I am sure the same will happen with face ID and that is a though sell unless it adds something new.

A lot of change this gen.

The old people who love iPhones may not like that.

Considering the plan was initially to include a physical home button, I have to wonder how good this will really be.

After seeing the Essential phone, I wish they went with a similar more discrete top cutout.

How does that top cutout even work when you watch a movie, or have a fullscreen app on screen? Does the app/movie cover the entire screen and thus you have part of the image cut off due to the cutout, or is the top area (where the cutout is) only visible in OS and not used at all in apps?

Apps probably just ignore that portion of the screen outright and render as though the display only starts below it.

I disagree.

It looks ugly as fuck being LCD thus it has light bleed. Essential ph really could have done with an OLED display.

Iphone X has tone more sensors in front so I'm fine with it.

The same thing happens every year.

I've been following Apple Keynotes for around 17 years, and with the Homepod OS leak and now this, this feels unusually transparent.

Usually this kind of leak might happen an hour before the event, where people don't have enough time to really dig all the details out of the firmware.

Dang, remember when Jobs used to send goons after people for potential leaks? Also, those emojis ALL look pervy.

There was never any intention to have a physical Home button on this model. There was an intention to have Touch ID but that was crapped due to technical limitations.

Yeah, this iPhone 8 is looking like an easy pass for me. I'm sure they've found a way to make the Face ID work but that feels like such a step backwards to me. The changes being made to the UX are bound to make their way to the other iPhones next year--they're simply too big to not to.

I'll save my money.

I haven’t seen the Essential Phone in person, but looking at video reviews, it looks severely underutilised despite much smaller cutout. At most, it’s used as a status bar while app theming is extended to it but otherwise, apps just use an aspect ratio that doesn’t extend to it, leaving it black anyway.

I think the smaller cutout on the Essential Phone is much better, but Apple is packing a lot more tech in their cutout and seems to be making the most of the remaining space next to it.

This is from a GM, golden master, which is the final beta for developers. This is hardly a leak comparable to someone in Apple going to the press.

If it sucks then it is a mistake to release it early. The only reason to do it would be money.

That is not the Jobs way.

I was corrected in that it was supposed to be Touch ID-capable, but not have a home button. Still have to wonder how good Face ID is if they weren’t ready to commit 100% to it.

There likely won’t be any traditional form factor iPhones next year so of course they changes will make it to next year’s models. The question is whether Touch ID will make a return. If Face ID is as good as it’s been made out to be - and Apple seems to be pretty confident in it to have removed Touch ID altogether - then we might not.

9to5Mac kinda made it sound like somebody leaked the GM to them. It’s entirely possibly they just found the files on Apple’s servers because it was eventually found there by others, but either way, Jobs probably would have fired the guy who accidentally made the early HomePod firmware available publically. Then to have them repeat the same mistake with the iOS 11 GM shortly after? Even with Tim Cook in charge I suspect someone’s in deep trouble over this.

Everything sounds dope.

Can't believe idiots fell for the fake white front iPhone 8 mockups lol. Of course that was never gonna happen.
