Hey designers!

I've always been interested in graphic design, never did it though. I've been doing some music and uploading it to SoundCloud for sometime now and I feel like I need a logo of some sort to replace the crappy pic of my gear. I feel like I know what I want to do in terms of design, I'm just not sure which tool would be suitable.

My design is a rectangular square wave (if that makes sense), pretty basic. Any tool would you guys recommend that is intuitive.

I'm not a professional designer, I just dabble for personal/business reasons, but I just want to say that the Lobster font is so overused now it should be outlawed. In the past few months I've seen it on porn videos, hospital signage, and everything in between.

Hey anyone participating on #36daysoftype on Instagram? It's an event for designers which takes in every year where you post a letter starting from A to Z and then numbers for 36 days. From graphics to animation, photography every discipline is allowed..

Today, we are at G.. haven't started to do G yet :/ I am trying to switch technique in every 3 letters.
Here my first 6 entries;)

i spent few hours with it, its quite easy to make a basic website (also responsive) but havent finished anything with it yet. Also CC website has plenty of widgets for Muse if you wanna add some special stuff.

I use C4d with default renderer but i am considering to switch to Octane which creates super results and i heard its pretty fast..tho it's quite expensive for me now :/

Gah i still haent done "i" yet due to freelancing shedule :/ need to finish it and move to J,K and L which i will use a dif technique again.

Guys, I'm starting to learn C4D by myself. Do you know any good tutorial/course? I don't mind if I have to pay for them, just want to learn this software properly.

Does anyone have a book they recommend to learn Illustrator/Photoshop? Is there like a well known book that teaches you the ropes? I know the absolute basics, but I'm mostly looking for something that teaches me the right measurements and the "laws" of designing logo's and other graphic design stuff.

I never studied Graphic design formally but if its just learning the programs you wan't lynda.com generally has very comprehensive courses for beginners.

A book that teaches you Photoshop/Illustrator won't teach you how to make logos. There are plenty of books dedicated to that sort of stuff.

I will also vouch for Lynda.com.

From the perspective of a career designer, I will say that there's nothing out there that can really teach you the right measurements or laws. You kind of just need learn through osmosis once you learn the basic techniques of lighting, illustration, Adobe suite, etc. It's more or less up to you to develop your own style so to speak. Heck, I've been doing marketing/design for seven+ years and I'm still constantly learning new stuff/techniques on a daily basis lol.

Anyone here use WordPress to build / sell websites? I'm making my church's page and can see myself exploring designing websites for others on the weekends. What tips, advice, and suggestions do you guys have?

On a similar note, what theme do you guys like most? I'm currently working with Enfold, and it's really nice. Enjoying building with it thus far.

I've used WordPress before at my last two jobs. Tips wise? All I can say is to learn some basic HTML/CSS so you can use the editor if you want to customize the code a bit. The kitchen sink is pretty powerful, but sometimes you might have an easier time manually coding if you're really interested in website design.

I would second this. Especially if you're a good designer, you're going to be pissed off with some weird shit that templates do and you'll want to change it. If you don't use some templates for their EXACT purpose made for there will be some weird things that pop up. Making sure you can do away with those is a big plus.

I'm actually going through that growing pain, if you will, this very moment. What would you guys recommend as far as HTML/CSS courses or free resources?

I took a photo and traced it in Photoshop...

My GF's sister is making a movie and wants to use these on business cards. The file above in Photoshop is set at 6.8"x6.1" @ 300 pixels/inch.

I guess the business card place is asking for "vector based PDFs."

what is my best option here? It's my impression that trying to change something that is pixel based (my Photoshop file) to vector based doesn't really make sense.... like converting a VHS to Blu-Ray.

if the printing place absolutely needs vector images, is there an easy way to convert something like this to vector? Or should I just tell them that my pixel based file is large enough to print on something as small as a business card?

The best way would be to trace your art in Illustrator. They might be asking for vector because they want to use a spot color for it, and a lot of print shops find that much easier to do with vector art.

But it's also possibly a resolution issue, depending on the actual size it will print at, because line art usually looks best at 900dpi and up. 300dpi really pertains to continuous tone images. Seems like you would be fine, since the art is so big; but it just depends how the art appears in the finished design.

Basically you should find out why they need vector, in case there is a legit pre-press reason for it, and to see if there might be a reasonable workaround. I would not really recommend just telling them to proceed anyway without first asking what the problem is. Note that many print shops have pretty rigid workflows and may not be all that flexible. They may well have a policy like "raster art = a 4-color job."

If it must be vector, its best to do it from scratch.

Depending how flexible they are, they MIGHT accept a really high res bitmap built out using the 50% threshold setting. And if that comes out jaggy, you can precede it with a gaussian blur. That's the best "cheat" for this sort of thing I know (did it a lot when I worked prepress).

You can also create your own portfolio if you want. Invites are hard to come by.

Hey all,

My boss has tasked me with "creating a letter that looks handwritten". Clearly the solution is in a decent OpenType font that has some degree of character variants available, and manually making minor adjustments. I'm just looking for suggestions. I don't want to go script heavy with a lot of connected ligatures and flourishes, but just some basic handwritten print fonts. Admittedly, I just don't know where to look, as both TypeKit and Fonts.com don't really tell you if a type face has a lot of additional characters outside of support for multiple languages.

So...anyone got any tips or hints?
