Star Wars: The Last Jedi |OT| It's Time For Silly OT Titles...TO END...

Another disappointing Star Wars film for me. That's 3 out of 3 new Star Wars films that were just 'ok' and I'm now starting to think that maybe the franchise just isn't for me anymore.

I absolutely adored the originals as a child to the point that they were my favourite films at one stage in my life. The prequels hit when I was in my very early teens so I tolerated them as well but now as a 30 something year old these new Star Wars movies just seem so lifeless and lacking in any imagination. I feel like I've just seen it all before and am really disappointed because these films feel like such a missed opportunity.

If I had to rank the new films I'd say:

The Force Awakens 5/10
Rogue One 7/10
The Last Jedi 6/10

Not really interested in seeing much more of the franchise to be honest.

IMO if you are an OT fan most will hate it or lie to themselves that they love it. Abrams killed Star Wars for me so I don't really care anymore.

Pretty much how I feel I actually remember my Dad taking us to see Star Wars at the theater. The prequels sucked but I got over it. But after the rehash that was TFA Star Wars was dead to me TLJ just put the nail in the coffin.

Some youtubers reviews were way super positive. They are not watching the same movie or are afraid of not getting pre-releases invites anymore.

Yeah all the Youtube reviewers, the critics from the papers and websites and people like me who loved the movie are all lying to you and ourselves. It is one big conspiracy.

Don't be worried, everyone has different opinions on stuff, if you end up loving it, good for you mate :)

I'm sure there are shills for every entertainment industry, movies, games etc and some media folk will genuinely love it although hearing Tarantino rant about Disney a couple of years ago and how they treat cinemas with Force Awakens , then we have this. Made me think what Disney can be like to media.

Abrams killed Star Wars for me so I don't really care anymore.

Well, he killed Star Trek first, then wanted to do the same favour to SW. Actually this movie tries to recover from Abrams' stupidity that was SW7.

Now that I learned that SW9 will be directed by Abrams once again, I believe that the effort was totally pointless.

I thought star trek was universally acclaimed? I'm no trekkie and I only saw the first one he did but it seemed decent enough...

LAST JEDI IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!

I've just got back from the cinema and it was the best Disney star wars yet, alot better then force awakens and better then rouge one

Last jedi 9/10
Rouge one 8/10
Force awakens 6.8/10

I'm surprised how many people like Rouge One over Force Awakens. I found Rogue One to be a pretty generic popcorn war flick with a star wars skin and zero character outside of the robot...

I was able to get into a session tonight through a tinder date....

Well, fuck. It's seriously the worst movie of the whole bunch and I actually like The phantom menace...

Pros

Space battle/light speed was cool

Cons

Finn and that asian girl, seriously. They could have cut the whole damn subplot out for real. She was like a Friends character or something, definitely didnt fit into Star Wars, i'm happy for the asian representation but they could have done better than her.

Snoke, dead out of fucking no where for no reason.

That fight scene with the guards was so choreographed it was obvious...huge swings telephoned in from across the room

Yoda....ruined, even though Rey had the books in the end, Yoda being so flippant and dismissive of Luke was terrible.

Super Leia....terrible

Luke, my biggest fear brought to life. Character assassinated. After all he did to NOT fight and kill Vader, even being ready to die himself, attempting to MURDER Ben in his sleep and then running away and being a Hermit, throwing Anakins lightsaber away...jesus fuck. Thanks for ruining him Disney, assholes.

Rey....big old nothing burger with her parents.

Porgs...glad Chewie killed that one. Just knowing they were there to sell toys at a later date bothered me, but they really were not so bad if i'm honest.

Worse than attack of the clones by a long shot. It felt like an attempt to make Star Wars like Guardians of the Galaxy.

Not angry, just disappointed

Pretty much and don't forget that Snoke
was also a nobody and jobbed despite the hints in TFA that he was some super powerful force user with lore. Nah, fuck that he nobody, lol.

NO SPOILERS
I'm really conflicted after watching 'The Last Jedi'. It's technically a well made movie however I do feel the script was rather weak for several reasons. First and foremost the movie was far too long in regards to the amount of narrative it contained, which in turn had a real negative impact on its pacing. Rather than the films extended run time be down to having more plot, instead I felt the film wanted to focus on all three main protagonists getting adequate screen time, which unfortunately in this case created a lot of filler. Fin's scenes inparticular felt like they could have easily been cut with no real change to the plot overall.

For those who felt that 'Force Awakens' played it a little too safe in regards to mirroring the plot beats of 'A New Hope' don't worry, episode 8 is in no way a copy of 'Empire'. There's quite a few bold and surprising narrative choices made in 'The Last Jedi', some are very interesting, some are a little questionable and some have made me doubt the very structure of this trilogy. Three movies, three different directors, three different visions. JJ Abrams planted the seeds of this trilogies mysteries, Rian Johnson has now taken those mysteries forward clearly with his own interpretation of what they are. I can't help but think that the trilogy would have been better served if just one director did all three movies, allowing the person who planted the seeds to watch over it's entire growth. Is it possible Star Wars will have the same problem the TV show LOST had?

Seems like this one might be or become the most divisive Star Wars movie, even more so than the prequels. I highly enjoyed it though even though there were some weird bits like
floating Leia in space.

Gonna see it again on Saturday evening will know better what i think by then.

Quiet you! I'm lamenting my childhood heroes being ruined here!

What I would give to have seen Luke have an ending like this!!!!

Who told you this was an ending? Look back at EP3, 4, 5, 6 and even this same EP8. There is no reason to believe that this is an end. He is now free to do things he wasn't able to do before.
And Yoda confirms that Force Ghosts are able of physical acts, as well as being sages

And frankly Luke told his nephew what will happen:
Ben will be hunted by Luke's ghost like he is by the death of his father in his heart. And we all see how unstable Ben Solo actually is. So much so that even Snoke has trolled him on the issue.

Yep agree on all of those points and I left the cinema equally disappointed.

To add to those comments you highlighted:

The whole casino planet was just poor, the kids looked completely out of place and felt more like an ad for Disneyland, as did the ending. There were no kids in the original trilogy and it appealed to kids (like me a the time) just fine.

I mean, just thinking of that, people are dying on those cruisers, meanwhile she's watching an alien horse race and talking about animal cruelty. But hey, you'll probably see a BB8 gambling machine at casino's soon.

Like you say, Luke just wouldn't have behaved like that because he didn't fear anything, in all 3 of the original trilogy he faced death, he faced his fears. This just wasn't the same character.

And finally just a quick word on jokes, that first conversation with Poe went on far too long and the Kylo Ren shirt off scene was, well, slapstick for want of a better word.

A bit messy no? Narratively weak, some disneyfication in the gags and humour too. When it became a star wars movie in the second half it was much more enjoyable. I think there's a fine line between readjusting conventions and being tonally off. Unfortunately the things that this movie tried to do differently fell into the latter for me.

Better than the TFA but pretty average overall.

The 'superman' segment just makes my blood boil. What a stupid fucking thing to include in this otherwise solid movie. The Canto Bight storyline was dumb also. And the base premise for the movie was just the first Battlestar Galactica episode '33'. What. The. Fuck.

I enjoyed the overall experience more than R1, but thought that retread aside, TFA is still the most consistent Star Wars film to date (any remains my personal favourite).

TLJ is a few stupid scenes away from being a masterpiece.

I spoiled myself on Gafera and I am so happy I did.

TFA was a shit-show and had no expectations on this.

LOL 93% on rottentomatoes. The money force is strong with this one

I kind of feel empty knowing that Luke, Leia, and Han are now all dead. I can't help but feel like there could have been a better way to "pass the torch" other than killing my childhood heroes...but I think Disney was just rushing out the movies and didn't really think it through.

Just got back from the theater, the wookie popcorn buckets, and the lightsaber drinks were awesome, everyone was laughing and having a good time, every seat filled, and applause here and there, only bad thing was a baby that would cry. One, of the better star wars films. Can't wait for Episode 9.

Just got out of my showing. Most people here have already said it.

I will consider this the last star wars movie.

I didn't like the first half but I did enjoy the 2nd half

I'm NOT a fan of the director.

Some very questionable choices in this movie.

1. Why not have Snoke challenge Rei. Have him about to beat her. Then have a Ben double team with Rei against Snoke? This way you stablish Snoke as a very strong villain. It took two super powerful force-users to destroy him.

They needed a fight scene anyway. What we got was that Snoke's bodyguards were very strong. They almost kill Ben. Luckyly Rei was there. Like, WTF?

2.I would had made Rei's training something very psychological. We all know she is very strong physically, but is she strong in the head?

I would had made her training something like a dream/nighmare (literally), were Luke is mocking and testing how strong she is mentally in it. At the same time, he encourages her every time she is about to give up.

I would had finished her training by her "weaking up" and finding herself with her arm stretched, offering the saber to Luke (like on the end of TFA). Yet, Luke is not there. Yet, she knows the training took place and is completed.

This keeps Luke/the-force very mystic, strange, and mysterious.

3. You didn't need to kill Luke. Just have him run to another planet. He doesnt want to help the rebellion directly. He is a mystic. His reasons are beyond human comprehetation.

Once again, this keeps the mystery going.

Why did he sacrificed himself again? He didn't kill Ben like he said he would.

4. Ben is the supreme leader of the empire now, and Rei can easily beat Ben. Why the stress?

Rian is directing another trilogy? No thanks.

I don't know what all the early reviews were smoking, this movie has some flaws.

I was excited to see him in person at our showing today. Now I could care less about him after where he nose-dive bombed this movie.

That whole scene in the beginning with the
rose sister and the bombers
should represent what happened to this movie.

My g/f having never seen nor cared for star wars in her life watched the movie marathon with me.
She said in the Last Jedi she saw the following.
Divergent
Harry Potter
Hunger games
Twilight
Karate kid

Pretty much little cliches

Well... yeah. All of those stole liberally (in one way or another) from the Star Wars saga, so sure.

That said, this is *not* a very good movie. If you would have asked me who directed it, I would have said 100% hands down "George Lucas". And even give that, the third act was the weakest of any of the movies, in my opinion.

Hell, I found the Crait DLC level in Battlefront 2 FAR more epic than the Crait battle sequence in the movie.

And I really wanted to love this. :\

Absolutely fantastic.

Empire has finally been topped as my favorite Star Wars film. Not by much but the third act is so damn good, that pushed it over the edge.

I've seen a lot of people describing this movie as a rollercoaster and that probably sums up my feelings too.

They pushed it a bit much with the comedy, almost to the point of being ridiculous. But it kind of works for the most part. It wasn't too bad but sometimes it felt a little off. Didn't really take away from the movie, just an observation.

I'll use spoiler tags just in case for how I feel about different events/characters in the movie.

The whole Leia reviving and floating back to the ship in space was really, really stupid. I want to say they should have ended her character there but she did a good job with her remaining scenes in my opinion.
I just don't know what they're going to do with her for episode IX since it seemed like they set her up to have an even bigger role to finish the trilogy. I'm guessing she never filmed any of those scenes so... yeah, it'll be awkward, whatever they do.

I'm not as sour on the Finn/Rose plot as some people. It does seem kind of silly in the end but I thought it was okay as it happened. I've read a number of reviews where people are loving her character though but I don't understand all the love.
I mean, she's cool and all but she's not that special. She's just... fine.

I really enjoyed Kylo and Rey in this movie and their dynamic together, although they did some silly stuff with Rey a few times. Like... surprise, here she is again out of nowhere. And speaking of rollercoaster, everyone loved the Snoke part and seeing them fight together... only to see he wanted all the power. Haha. That excitement ended very quickly. They made Snoke look like a joke in that scene which sucks and we still know absolutely nothing about him. Are they supposed to explain his backstory in episode IX? Is anyone even going to care at that point? Probably not. So it was weird that they handled it this way. Awesome scene, I loved the fight after that happened but I wish we knew more about his character before then.

I know some didn't like it but I enjoyed the Yoda scene. I was hoping he would return in some form and I thought they handled it well. I'm also hoping we get to see Yoda or Obi-Wan reaching out to Rey and having some scenes directly with her in IX.

More rollercoasting riding was the way they handled things with Luke.
I thought it was awesome when he just strolled out there and took all the fire. It was nice seeming him kind of facing off with Kylo. But to just have his character gone right after that seemed silly. I get it but I think it's the one thing in the movie that doesn't sit well with me. It doesn't ruin the movie but it kind of sucks. Like someone else said, I know a lot of time passed for Luke but it seems so out of character to do some of the stuff he did here.
I have to assume he'll have a force ghost role in episode IX and they can sort of redeem it if they really nail how they handle that. But I'm certainly not getting my hopes up.
If they knew they wanted to do this to his character, I wish they would have done it in the next film. Which kind of leads me into the final thought...

I don't know how to feel heading into episode IX. I was hype for VII. It looked cool, Han and Chewy and the gang were back. I was amped up for this one, too. We were getting Luke back, baby. We had a great mix of old badass characters plus the cool new ones. Now we're pretty much left with... just Rey and Kylo? I mean, I like them but... damn. To have everything potentially riding on them to carry the weight in that movie seems a bit much. I guess there's no sub-boss plot or characters to look forward to, either. There's no Phasma type character, not that she did much of anything in these two movies.

Overall, I did enjoy it. I had fun watching the movie and I think it's a good Star Wars film. I don't know if I like it more than The Force Awakens which I liked quite a bit but they're pretty close. I think this movie will be more rewatchable than TFA was since this has more of a focus on the action while TFA had to set up the story. I'm still not sure how to feel about this movie but I have a feeling it'll grow on me as time passes and as I think about it more. I just hope they don't drop the ball when they wrap up the trilogy.

I enjoyed it, but it did have its flaws. As for Leia, we have Force users moving rocks, X-Wings, and people. Why do people think it's suddenly weird to see her use it to propel herself? The Finn and Rose mission felt unnecessary though. That could have easily been cut.

Also nothing noticeable from the soundtrack. The prequels were a disappointment, but at least we got "Duel of the Fates" out of them.
