A specific small group of people that liked a certain genre in music which nobody seemed to care about, because it was COMPUTER MUSIC. People who didn't care for popular music, and put their heart and souls into it. It was NOT about the money, it was about passion.

When Trance music was not about EQ'ing things to death, or compressing the hell out of tracks. When before internet became big going to the local vinyl shop and searching for that one tune that you couldn't get out of your mind, that even kept you awake, because it was so awesome. There was a time, when almost every tune that came out was actually a 'tune'. And when you woke up, the only thing that was on your mind was Trance music. Hunting for new music everyday, an unstoppable healthy addiction. Listening to BBC's Radio 1 Essential Mix with mister Pete Tong, and falling in love with every tune that was played. A time when people weren't afraid of making a 'filler' track, a tune that wasn't exactly a bomb, but nevertheless very enjoyable. A time when you went to see Armin on the Ocean Diva. Armin spinning tunes while the boat was cruising along the 'Ijsselmeer' and nobody even knew who Armin van Buuren was. A time when you actually stayed home at thursday evening, just because you didn't want to miss a single episode of 'A State of Trance'.

I'm sorry, but to put down what trance is today, because of what you posted above is absolutely ludicrous. This is 2012, of course Armin is going to be huge. Of course people are going to have favorites. To be upset over the fact that the music is so easy to have access too is ridiculous. This isn't the 90s. People like money. I don't see it as a "problem" with trance music nowadays that it doesn't fit your expectations anymore. The same thing could probably be said for every single genre out there at one point.

Anyway, ULTRA Music Festival starts today. Pretty epic lineup!

this post sounded promising, as though you were pining for the earliest days of the scene in the early 90s. then i read the bolded part. ASOT started in 2001, well into what most of the oldest trancecrackers consider the downfall of the trance genre. i'm not saying that trance today is better (or worse) than what was going on 10 years ago, but in fact is largely the same from my perspective.

there's far more of a noticeable difference between the trance of 1995 and 2001 than trance of 2001 and 2012.

I heard many good things about his College Invasion tour thing that he did in CA (and other places). Many reports indicated that he was going back to his trance roots, at least partially. I'm guessing he went back to house for the UMF crowd. Shit sells.

Him and Hardwell did Cinco de Mayo in Albuquerque last year. All but like the last hour and a half was just pure trance, and that last hour and a half was mostly Club Life Las Vegas stuff. Which I'm fine with but could see where others may not.

Since this is kind of the trance thread, picked up ASOT 2012 and Trance Nation: Cosmic Gate this week. Haven't really listened to ASOT 2012 yet cause my GF ran off and stuck that in her car but the Cosmic Gate set is really good.

Start off by listening to Anjunabeats. Then listen to the 7 Skies podcast. And cap that all off with Trance Around The World with Above & Beyond.

That will give you plenty of quality House and Trance music to listen to.

I like ambient trance, personally, which your mixes had more of. ASoT sounds a lot more like hard house.

Ah yes, same here. though my later mixes start having a bit more electronic/house, but always very melodic. You'll probably like volume 2 more. Alot of performers at asot did play some house, its just how live shows are lately. Listen to shogun and the dash Berlin set from Miami that I'll post soon. Those were great

Oh nice. He was in Miami at the time too I believe, if I'm remembering his facebook right. He probably did some side things at various WMC shows, but not the main show.

I do not disagree with you on this. But that bolded part was more about Armin than about the scene. Ofcourse, the period in time you mention is considered by many to be 'the Golden Age of Trance'.

I am going to take a guess and say that one reason there is so much "crap" trance now is that there are a shit ton more DJs trying to make a mark, usually with a unique sound that really isn't trance.

McLovin, that mix looks good, going to take a listen later! I also look forward to Sensation events. They are finally coming to USA (hopefully LA) and I will definitely be there.

I've been listening to the Den Bosch sets over the last few days and there are some fantastic mixes in there. The big Netherlands events at the end of each month are always the best ones, mainly because of the sheer volume of DJs and Producers who attend.

Eh, to each his own. Yea Dash plays a lot of cheese and his own songs, but who doesn't play their own music? I actually haven't liked his sets lately, his set in Russia I think was terrible, but really enjoyed this one. The unexpected mashups (which I thought were done pretty well) and the energy of the crowd was awesome to hear.

The thing is, Trance is such a broad style now. 10 years ago you had the usual players like Tiesto, Guy Ornadel, Judge Jules, Paul Oakenfold playing tracks like Cafe del Mar, for an Angel, Superstring. All big room tunes. Before that, it was a lot deeper, progressive and far less commercial.

Today though it's all over the place, but I consider artists like Dinka, Mango, Proff & Jaytech to be trance. Other might say they are Progressive house artists. They are so close, that to me it doesn't really matter.

That particular mix of mine is more of a homage to tracks with massive build up's and awesome drops. The types of tunes that makes the crowd go nuts, much like the experiences I had in my clubbing years! I consider some of the tracks to have the same impact to those older ones, that's why I dropped it in this thread.

I definitely get that there is a blurring between trance and house going on, but most of the producers in your first mix are definitely house producers.

It wasn't a judgment of the music, just of its place in this thread.
