My November and December updates will look extremely strange.
A bunch of crazy friends decided to gift me pretty much everything I didn't own from that recent Halloween sale for my b-day. I didn't want to add 40+ games at once and I'm probably not gonna play all of them anyway, so I decided to add them as I go instead. Which makes it look like I'm buying a new game every day which looks stupid. But I needed to do it this way to not get discouraged from the amount of negative points I would have gotten otherwise. Now it's just a huge amount of +-0s halting my backlog progress.

I need to make it clear to people that I don't want new games as gifts. I already have more than I can play!

Can't speak for anyone else but if I buy/get a bundle, I simply add the interesting games as normal, -1 per game. When I play them it's aso +1 per game like any other games.

Seeing as Darkadia is causing problems, and apparently Backloggery is a GAF favourite, I've recompiled my current backlog using the latter.

I've only gone back as far as last gen (for accessibility reasons), and I'm not counting PC games, because it's not a viable platform for me right now. Console/handheld gaming is currently my main go-to.

PS4 is high priority, with a number of big open world games I really want to crack through. I tend to get too bogged down in side content, but need to learn to put that off until later, or until it's necessary for progression.

Handhelds I mainly play during lunch hour at work, but I've been slacking recently. Lots of smallish games on Vita that need mopping up, while 3DS has a couple of big titles for which I need to clear the main game before I can consider purchasing the next in its respective series.

PS3 games are a low priority, but I do intend to finish some major ones before moving onto their current gen iterations. (E.g. Mass Effect and Deus Ex)


Darkadia is nice in that it has an actual library of games, so it's consistent between users and you can see boxarts, etc.
But I like the straight numbers Backloggery gives you, and how it's much smoother and easily customisable.
Backloggery also makes me feel better knowing that I've cleared at least half the games I've bought for myself ^^;

Any other thoughts/advice would be appreciated!

Update: I have been playing a ton of H1Z1, League of Legends, Rocket League and Overwatch. I did start playing Dragon Age: Origins finally. I got it for free from Origin a year or two ago, so I'm not really sure where to put it. I've already been pleased with it and plan to continue, but not sure if I should add it to the list.

I also jumped on the sale for Titanfall 2 because I've really wanted to play it, and it's been fantastic. I've played probably around 10 hours this weekend already, and plan on playing much more. Great game.

If nothing else Jeff, you could probably manage Tales from the Borderlands. Each episode is about 2 hours. They're all a blast so it's definitely worth it.

November 2016 Update (11/29/16): Even though I was able to beat a handful of newer releases from the past month, I preceded to acquire more video games than I ever have within the same time span. Black Friday pre-sales brought a couple offers to the table that were a little difficult to turn down and it was probably the first time that I splurged on the hobby with a string of frequent purchases. Participating in the 'Blitz' thread clearly hasn't diminished my habits but, as I believe I previously said, it has been fun keeping track of all the new with the defeated.

I'm pretty happy I managed to get WoFF and Pokemon out of the way before FFXV came out and I'm especially happy I went back and finished PixelJunk Monsters EIGHT YEARS after I'd quit it out of frustration really close to the end. Now I'm in the worst negative figure all year. It's all part of my GOTY rush, but even still, this is going to be madness. I'm gonna have to crunch like I've never crunched before to get back into positive figures substantially and get a lot of shit finished.

I'm only planning one purchase for this month, The Last Guardian, otherwise, it's GOTY backlog time. I had thought of getting FFXV, but I'll sit on that until the New Year.

Damn, what a crazy ass month. I ended up *not* playing FFXIV (damn you internet), but damn did Black Friday hit me hard. The good news is though, I have plenty of stuff to play for pretty much all of next year :p And I also beat *a lot* of games on top of it, so I didn't completely ruin my entire year.

My 2016 total right now is +1. I am still in the positive. I want to end in the positive... and I don't know what I'm getting for Xmas. So, I better beat some games, just in case. Probably a bad month to start The Witcher 3 of all things, but such is life.

Let's close this year out with a strong finish :D

Well shit, I'm really screwing this up at the end of the year. I was on track to beat my final score from last year by a decent margin, but now I'm only one point ahead, and it's unlikely that December will end up positive considering Christmas gifts and all.

The negatives aren't even really my fault this month. :( I had some money that was about to expired in my Microsoft account (from way back when they converted MS points to real money) so I grabbed ReCore and Lara Croft GO on the Windows Store to avoid wasting it. Likewise, I got Picross from My Nintendo because my Nintendo coins were going to expire soon. Gears of War was free with my new video card.

I'm done for the year. Gonna play Pokémon, Terraria and the Guild Wars games for the rest of the year. Pretty annoyed that my progress was halted by that huge gift I got. But I sorted them, played the ones I liked and gave away the rest so at least it's all done now and nothing was added to the backlog!

Next year my goal is to finish everything I want to play on NES, SNES, Game Boy, GBA, Gamecube, PS1 and PS2. Everything before the last gen that I have left. That way I can stop stressing over old things breaking and so on.
I will probably play some long RPGs on DS and PSP on the side, to make sure I get those finished during my lifetime :p
On PC I will try to focus on finishing everything I've started. The Tomb Raider series, the Witcher series, Alan Wake and a couple of other things.

It might take less than that, however, as many of the games in my backlog are from bundles and I'll probably not like them all. Also, I haven't bought so few games since I created my steam account in 2011, so I feel my backlog is under control now.

Anyways, how do you handle expansions? I'm assuming +1 but if I buy a game with the expansion included is that -2?

Same in as out is the only rule. So if you count a game with an expansion as +2 they are also -2. If it's -1 it's also only a +1 for the whole experience. :)

Man Dark Souls 3 and Black Friday REALLY messed up my score for 2016. I only played one game for 5 months and bought a shit ton (by my standards) in one day.

I've got my spreadsheet ready... do we wait until we're in 2017 to start filling out that form?

December 2016 Update (12/31/16): I'll probably knock out Steins;Gate 0 within the coming week so this will be the final update for the year! As expected, I got stomped with newer purchases when I should've been more focused on finishing what I currently have in possession. Nabbing Limited Run stuff will surely put a damper on the next twelve months with their monthly releases and my willingness to spill leisure coin for Black Friday might be another obstacle for overcome. Despite the lack of positive ground over my backloggery, this thread has happened place my purchasing habits into perspective and I hope 2017 has a little bit less star power so that I don't feel compulsive toward buying a bunch of stuff. I appreciate you hosting these archnemesis and I look forward to participating in the subsequent round!

If nothing crazy happens, I'm probably seeing no change this month. Not a lot of time for games and the ones I've started are all pretty long. This year will turn out a very slight positive, but I played some great, memorable games and that's what counts. Also got through some of the chewier road blocks toward completion, so that REALLY counts. I didn't finish 40 games this year, but I also don't remember the last time I bought as few as 24. I'm going to keep playing games, but I'm looking to buy less than 20 this coming year, so really hoping to get close to that final countdown in 2017!

Whew, and that's pretty much the end of the year for me. Another good month. I bought two games I wanted, was gifted one game for Christmas (from my brother, the only one in my family I actually ask for games from) and added one game from my PS+ backlog (which I have listed down on my computer but don't bother adding to my actual backlog unless I start them). And then I finished a bunch of games, mostly thanks to the Holiday break, including Bound, which I finally got back to from August, and TLG. God I love TLG.

My goal at the start of the year was to get through some of the lengthy games in my backlog and finish with a positive score. I managed the latter, which is great, but of the lengthy games, I only finished 2 of the 4 I originally had in mind (Trails in the Sky FC and SC). Hopefully I'll get to the other two (KH1 HD and FFX HD) done sometime next year.

Main OP

So with a day to go, I'm calling it. I've ended the year... rather badly. While I did finish at least one game (The Last Guardian came out of nowhere to speed past Uncharted 4 and Overwatch to be my GOTY), I bought too many games thanks to cheap CEX prices, Christmas/New Year's deals and part Christmas gifts.

And because I bought a lot of games this month, it tanked my overall total that even if I had started going through it from last week onwards, I'd still be in minus figures overall.

So here's the damage. The damage that, until now, I've been afraid of putting into Backlog, HowLongtoBeat and my own internal list because of how bad the tally would be.

Final overall net worth for the year: -20

So the end of year period was the start of my undoing because up until that point, I had managed to do most of the year in positive or equal numbers. The only times it did fall into the negative, it was small and could be easily recouped.

In doing this, I've learnt that, up until the end of the year, I could restrain myself in purchasing games if I stick to a set criteria of games I've already picked out AND focus on my backlog. And that I could easily drop whatever I was playing if I wasn't enjoying it.

Next year, I'm going to learn to be more self-restrained for especially the latter part of the year and tackle more of my backlog in ways that may be creative. Like, for example, I'm going to plan out a theme per month on my backlog. January may be a game where I entirely - or at least, mostly - focus on indie games. February, I'll focus on a certain franchise or genre, etc etc etc.

Of course, March will be a tricky thing to handle with the Switch release and the games I'll hope to pick up for that, but the themed monthlys would be an interesting way to deal with it.

But this was easily a fun challenge for me to try and attempt for the first time. I'm definitely going to be back next year for a second rodeo.

I'm to the point where I am having to put not games, but consoles on the back burner. I'm only taking my PS4 and 3DS back with me to college, so that should alleviate the Xbox One, Vita, and Wii U backlogs. I also started a Google Docs to help me keep track of the games I want to beat. I want to clear the backlog and spend less on gaming in 2017 so I'm trying to set things straight from day 1.

But in the end, I beat more games than I bought. So good! Admittedly most of my backlog decreasing is actually from all the removed games throughout the year, but that's okay. If I don't want to play them, then I'm not going to let them clog my backlog. :p

I wonder how different 2017 is going to be... on one hand, I have significantly less games I want to buy overall (my DS collection is more or less complete, I only need two more PS3 games, I can't think of any 3DS titles I want, and I plan on buying the last three Wii games I want very shortly after the new year), but on the other hand I want to mainly focus on beating RPGs/other long games next year... and RPGs are long. :p I think my goal will be to mostly break even... and I'll do the same as this year and use January to 'buffer' my score a little bit. I still have some shorter games to get through, of course.

So yeah, I'll see you all next year (so very shortly). It was a blast!

EDIT: As a bonus, here is my backloggery score for the year, which is in fact quite a bit higher, and my 2015 score which is... horrible...

Adding Dark Souls 3 to my satisfied list. Still very much playing it, but 12 hours in less than a week so far, and it's probably my favorite in the series (just with how well it runs, my knowledge/confidence going through it, connecting to co-op, etc).

December update

Well, I managed to offset the Christmas gifts to end up with a neutral result this month, which was about the best that could be hoped for. I finish the year with a score of 26, one higher than my 2015 score... a slight improvement, but I was hoping to do much better. Poor results in the last three months killed that notion, unfortunately.

Hopefully 2017 will again see a better result. :)
