Famitsu Most Wanted Top 30

Every time I see this list, I can't help but think "God, Japan has awful taste" and have to remind myself that this only polls Famitsu readers - the hardest of the hardcore of Japan. They have awful taste.

Then I remember that I'm rather eccentric when compared to the typical "hardcore" gamer, both in the west and in Japan.

It really should go without saying, but the Famitsu Top 30 corresponds with sales about as much as a GAF Top 30 would.

Kirby isn't on there because Kirby is big with normal people and normal people don't vote in these polls. Okamiden and Dead Rising 2 are on there because Okami and Dead Rising are like "hardcore cool cult hits", the way God Hand is around here. It's not going to have much effect on their eventual sales fate.

If you polled GAF, you'd probably get a pretty disgusting list.

Yeah.

What's funny is that it gets more and more unrealistic and out-of-touch with reality the closer to the start of a gen you get. Nowadays, the list, while epitomising everything wrong with gamers today, would be quite grounded in reality. Close to the launch of new systems, it'd be filled with stuff like Final Fantasy VII Remake, Metroid Prime: Hunters, Perfect Dark Zero, Sadness, Naughty Dog Game, Home and Red Steel.

Exactly what I was wondering.

It's also amazing to me that Japan still doesn't care about any Western games at all. Unless you count Dead Rising 2, though it's a sequel to a Japanese game.

That list just made me realize how little I'm looking forward to any Japanese games anymore :/.

Outside of Nintendo, that is.

This list is almost aways pretty niche.

You must realize that it's all done by write-in votes by Famitsu readers. Meaning that only the most avid gamers actually bother doing the survey and thus their opinions are extremely over-represented.

DQ7 is my favorite. DQ9 is pretty boring, I lost interest pretty quickly, it lacks the addictive factor from the past series.

The Last Remnant PS3 has been in the top 30 most wanted since forever I guess. Even in August 2009 Famitsu issue (first Famitsu issue that I've bought), TLR was still there.

I see two games on that entire list I care about. Japan could practically disappear from the gaming scene and I'm not really sure I'd notice. Well, maybe a few exceptions, but relative to last gen, they have little influence.

Well... Ys was originally a PC series... I guess that's why they moved platforms/gone multiplatform?

I think Falcom does okay on PC. It's actually pretty funny to go into a PC game store in Japan. It's like, two feet of Falcom, two feet of Blizzard, Final Fantasy XI, and then seven fucking aisles of shit that would make you want to scrub your eyes out with a barbed whisk.

Same here (but adding Capcom). There's only 2 games (MG: R and Dead Rising 2) on the list that I'm interested in.

You usually have to go up a floor or two. They don't like to waste good real estate on stuff that doesn't sell well.

The shmup category is very small (I checked the PSP section only, I guess it's not as big or a bit bigger in the 360 area), like a half or two rows of a shelf. As compared to the RPG category, which takes 2-4 shelves (namely for the PS2 and PSP).

It's a most wanted list from readers, its not a sales list which would apply to a much broader amount of people.
