Random thoughts and tips on WvW

WvW.jpg

We did it! We won a WvW.

I spent all the stress test in the different WvW zones. Felt like I got 2-3 levels.

Let me tell you, defensively: well placed ballista in a keep can slow down a zerg and offensively: it can help push your troops forward. I feel like people are doing a better job picking up supply, but still some people don't. Remember, after a supply camp is taken over pick up supply.

Also there are still people who get lured by the enemy into Legendary Defenders and get one shotted. Don't be that person.

I saw atleast 2 of the Towers we had in Eternal Battleground fully upgraded. They looks so different. The walls look like they are made of steel and the door looks like a very thick stone.

Well done whoever did that. Also for those that don't know Keeps can be upgraded to have waypoints... So there are ways to move about the quicker. Also the Guard quantity is increased and the level of Guards is raised to 83 when you upgrade them. If this is a supply camp, the guards escorting the Yak get upgraded too.

Finally our server managed to take Stonemist Castle. It was very impressive use of siege. There were trebuchets far off bombarding the gate and walls. There were arrow carts placed where enemies would gather. Ballista were placed at bottlenecks. Rams were everywhere. 3 Rams to a door!

I also have to point out there is now a buff when you are undermanned in WvWvW. But it didn't really do anything to help. It gave you +33% gold, +33% exp, +33% karma. The gold helps buy siege stuff I suppose... but its not like more damage or more hp. The buff only appeared a few minutes.

Well done Henge!

I closed by doing some of the WvW jumping puzzle. It was fun. Knocked around afew Borlis guys with logs at one of the trap switch command center. I got killed shortly after when they made it through though. Wasn't able to make it to the chest. But I hear it gives you siege blueprints and resets daily.

Ha, no actually there was an even sized turn out for all 3 servers. At one point we were teaming up with Borlis Pass to take down Tarnished Coast (they owned Stonemist). In the end we snuck in and killed the keep lord while Borlis Pass kinda sat around and then we ran them out.

so epic

It still requires the small hack I describe in my original post using AutoHotKey, but otherwise I believe you should be able to just install the software and load his profile, then tweak it to your heart's content.

I forgot to mention before that you can set the right mouse button to toggle in xpadder. This is the profile I made for my cousin, for the 360 gamepad:

You guys are so lucky you got to play the beta. I'm sitting here trying to finish my articles/reivews before deadline. T_T

So, I tinkered around on my Guardian because I'm still not 100% sure whether I want to main one, or stick with Warrior. Leaning more towards Warrior, Guardian is fun but way too much standing still and a serious lack of ranged options.

Sounds like you guys had a blast in WvW, I passed on it this time because I just wanted to relax and enjoy the game rather than fight tooth and nail for something. Good work, maybe Henge isn't doomed after all.

Found something interesting; one of the dyes I found, "Sour", has a gradient map applied to it. It starts off green and then fades to orange/brown;

UO3ne.jpg

Also unlocked a few colors, nothing fantastic except "Midnight Olive" which was a very very dark green.

Overall, a nice taste... but I can't wait to actually get in there for real.

We can T_T together. I had to work late and got home just as the servers were coming down. I missed the whole thing. Oh well. Hoping for a Beta Weekend soon.

Oh, also. I should mention I went from 40-44. Defending Stonemist nets you over 2k XP for a Silver reward every 3 min, Gold is something like 2.8k. That is one way to level REALLY fast if you can be involved in a fight constantly and hold the castle. I think what they do is give you a bar of XP per defense of the castle.

Yeah, that doesn't seem exploitable as hell. No. haha.

Which one of you is Sur Drake because had a blast playing with you, sorry had to leave early. Got back on 30 min later just in time for the event.

Well I didn't gain even a full level from doing that, I just noticed after we had finally taken it that I was getting a bar of xp per defense.

I'm not mad or anything, just seems like something that people will exploit is all.

I'm really glad you guys did well, by the way.

Oh, great. I believe I still have it all setup so I'll just need to grab those two things. Was his profile in your original post? If so, I have it bookmarked at home.

Thanks, when we first got into the EB, it wasn't looking too good for us. We got stomped when trying to take one of Blue's towers, they came along and took our nearby supply camp, then they took our tower down the road and pushed us back to one of our nearby keeps. We pushed them from there, took back our tower, took back our supply camp, then moved on to assault that original tower. While that was going on we had someone on our keep shelling one of their walls with a treb. They had a lot of guys on the walls and some siege, but once that wall came down we flooded in and took it over. We then went on to get the dredge and hylak on our side, over time we also completely upgraded that tower and they didn't even dare come near it again.

From there we set our sights on Stonemist and came at them from two sides of our own and Borlis on another (I think). Over an hour later we finally managed to kill the keep lord. After that though we only had one supply caravan coming in and that was about 150 supply every uhhh 5 min maybe? Then Borlis pass started shelling one of our northern walls with a treb on their nearby tower, but we didn't have much supply because A. we only had the one supply every 5 min or so and B. people constantly took supply from the castle making it so we couldn't repair nor upgrade very fast. At one point Tarnished Coast broke through into the inner courtyard, but we were able to push them back out. At one point we had Borlis pushing in from the North and TC from the East, but held them off somehow.

I think what ANet needs to do is make it so if there's an upgrade being built, make it so no one can take supply until it's finished because getting people to listen and not take it is next to impossible.

You can input your control scheme manually into your program fairly easily though, right?

If not, anyone know if Xpadder works with fine with a ps3 controller? (already have motionjoy installed)

that would be me

The game by yourself is good, but if you team up with someone it really magnifies the fun factor by like 10. :p

Assuming you are talking about Total Game Control here, the trial version does not even allow you to save a profile. You can manually input the control scheme, but there is no way to save it when you do. I tried using it for BWE1, but when I shut down my computer I had to rebuild the profile. If you want to use Total Game Control, you really want to use the full version. I switched to Xpadder for the second BWE for this reason.

Xpadder works fairly differently from Total Game Control though, so it took a little bit of trial and error to get my profile set up for the first time. I actually prefer it to Total Game Control now that I'm used to it, but there are advantages to both.

And yes, I used Xpadder with my PS3 controller. Since you have the option to emulate a 360 controller with Motionjoy, there is rarely a situation where you have to worry about it working or not.

well, looks like i will be using xpadder. No desire to pay for something like that, especially if another product works just as well and is free

Thanks

Ohh cool. Yes, I will try to party up at BWE again. It seems like most people on GAF are only WvW though which I have no interest in atm.

Was I not like the best Engineer you ever saw?!!!!!

I focused on WvW due to the short period and wanting to keep PvE as new as possible for launch.

I understand. I think next BWE I will try and play in a few WvW matches and not do PvE only.

I've been doing PvE only but I never get a lot of time to play because of busy RL. In 2 BWEs and 2 stress tests, I'm only at level 25, only accomplishments is 100%ting Queensdale, Kessex Peek, Divinity's Reach and Lions Arch.

Downloaded xpadder, but I am a bit confused on how to import the profile that hawkian provided since I dont see a clipboard or anything like that. You wouldnt happen to have a saved profile for the game in an importable format?

I tried setting up it manually, but got a bit confused on how I was supposed to do two button combinations

thanks

I'm pretty sure you can just open the files. Its a little tricky though, because for Xpadder you have two files: one for the gamepad profile, and one for the actual button mapping. You won't be able to use the Total Game Control profile that Hawkian made, but I beleive he posted his friend's Xpadder profile at one point.

As for button combinations, this is where it gets tricky. Basically, the game profile will consist of 10 (I think) layouts for the controller. Instead of setting a button combination to a specific key, you can set up a button as a modifier, and holding that button down will shift to a different controller layout (you could also set this as a toggle if you wanted to). So if you set R1 to shift to layout 2, you can now set every single button on layout 2 to a different key than on layout 1. The tricky part here is, you need to make sure to map important functions like movement and camera control on every single layout, or else you won't be able to move when you hold down the modifier button.

I'm not home right now, so I can't really get into the specifics. I'll try to explain better later when I get the chance.

Xpadder isnt recognizing the profile that hawkian pasted. I guess its due it to it being ah html doc or something.

I tried one of the provided profiles, and that got recognized, so I am assuming its a problem with the file

And yea, I still dont get how to map multiple keys

ah, I think i found it. Set selector is the thing I want.

Though a profile would be helpful since I think im bound to screw something up, lol

Only issue is that it doesn't work wirelessly.

Well, think i finally inputed everything manually into xpadder. Really wasnt too bad once I figured out set selector was the key

I am not sure that I actually got the LB+RB and LT+RT button functions though. Didnt really see how i got that from the xpadder profile that hawkian posted

I'm not sure what's in the Xpadder profile that Hawkian posted, so I can't really say. If you give me more specifics on what you are trying to do, I might be able to help you out.

Also, make sure to set your set switching buttons to "while held", otherwise you will get stuck in your alternate set. I made that mistake the first time.

My own profile is still a work in progress really. I got the basic mechanics there, but it needs more playtesting before I can really nail down the layout. I ended up only using the controller for maybe a couple of hours during the last beta weekend before switching over to using a mouse, so it hasn't gotten a lot of use yet.

For the record, I've found that Keyboard and Mouse worked better for me when I played Necromancer. Specifically because I was using a staff as my primary weapon, and 4 of the staff skills are long range AOE attacks. Trying to use the controller with that, I found myself constantly switching between camera control and cursor control, and it never really felt fluid until I switched to the mouse. I imagine an Elementalist might have the same problem (depending on weapon set). But when I used Guardian and Thief in the first BWE, the controller was the better option by far.

Well, that is the profile I am going off of. I made a few tweaks concerning the placement of the main attack buttons, but I left everything else as is since i really dont know how that will feel until i actually play it

Well, I don't personally like the layout used in that profile (I would certainly do as you have already done and re-arrange some of the attack buttons, and the utilities as well), but its functional. At least on quick review I don't see any glaring omissions. But as you said, you really just have to play the game, and see how it feels to you. I know I have made several edits in the time I've used the controller, just because what might have worked for Hawkian felt a little awkward for me, or a creative solution I thought I had ended up not being all that convenient.

Ultimately, my profile only really makes sense to me because I partially came up with it (using Hawkian's layout as a baseline). If anyone else were to just load up my profile and try to play with it they would just wonder "Why the hell would you put that button there?" But it works for me, because I have a logical reason in my mind why everything is where it is, even if it is a roundabout sort of logic.

Haha you dudes are quick. For anyone wanting a link direct to the blog entry on their site.... Here you go.

Edit: For prepurchase that means we get early access right? So it's actually 3 days earlier for myself and others.
